Gate check

So Terry, are you suggesting that they just eliminate any check whatsoever and just let you stroll into the park without at least glancing into your bags? I'm not sure I would agree with that and have no problem opening up all the zippers on my backpack to let some CM poke a flashlight around to make sure that I have nothing "obvious" that would hurt someone.

Nothing is 100%, but anything is better than nothing!

Oh Baloney! The "anything" that they do makes people complacent because they feel that there is security. Have you looked at the security guards? Retired and/or out-of-shape folks. Even if you do have something in your bags, how is an 80 year old or someone 100 pounds overweight going to stop you from going ahead?

If Disney wants to do real security they should. Install metal detectors and hire a bonded security firm. They won't do it though because too many people would be uncomfortable with that. Until they do, I will look down on the whole process as a total waste of time.

Erin :D

I have visions of peoples sneakers setting off the metal detectors and people having to remove their shoes to be wanded....

Sunking, yes I do suggest they get rid of the useless bag checks. They do nothing. The only thing illegal that folks bring intheir bags is food! LOL! If I wanted to bring something bad in than I would put it in my pocket or tape it to my ankle. We did fine at WDW without bag checks so I am SURE it would be the same. Disney is only doing bagchecks so that it gives people a sense of security.

I don't have a problem with the gate checks. If it makes people feel secure that fine.

We I go to the local hosptials, panthers game, marlin games, dolphin games there are gate checks. It is now a part of our lives. It changed back on 9/11 and I am sorry to say it probably will never go back to the way it use to be.

Have you ever looked at your own police force. I have and I will say that at least half of them are as was said "100 lbs overweight. It was also mentioned the age of the guards, but a I had mentioned before when we had seen a incident at the gate, guards come out from nowhere. I am sure if there was something happening the person could not take care of it, there is plently of help around that we don't see.

Well, you could try it sometime and find out …

Never underestimate all the security you DON'T see at WDW. You think the guards are the only ones watching you while you're going through bagchecks?

:earsboy:

Having said that though, I've heard that the security in the parks is incredible

I work for a company that has a corporate headquarters in southern california. During a security conference the security proffesionals, who do this for a living, raved about Disney's security.

Those security professionals had been given a behind the scenes look at Disney security and came away highly impressed.

It was also mentioned that if you're an adult male walking solo around Disney, the chances that you're being watched from time-to-time is rather high.

I am glad they are still doing it. My opinion is that if it takes 5 more minutes of my time to ensure my safety then so be it!

Ive seen enough for one life time!!!!!

Well, I almost always am an adult male walking alone through the parks, so I probably draw all the undercover security away from the rest of you, so the rest of you don't have to worry about being watched LOL. Having said that, yes I do feel like I'm being watched sometimes, especially if i'm lingering in one place or something. It's probably unusual for an adult male alone to be a disney dweeb like myself, so I can understand.

<Just as an FYI ... the bag checks are less about the bags than they are about giving Security time to look at everyone coming in. There are multiple cameras trained on the entrance and turnstile area of each park -- that's been discussed before. Think about it ... there are hundreds of people entering per minute. What's the best way to slow them down and let the folks watching the security monitors get a look at them? Funnel them through a bag check.>

The cameras at the turnstiles are much more efficent at this because EACH person is stopped as the ticket is scanned before a person is released giving more time for checking out.

There are numerous people with bags going behind the "security "backs as they check bags or talk with each other. People who want to do harm with knives and guns will attach to person . Chemicals can be smuggled into bottles. Not everyone is checked.

What about all these scooters that are broght in. Are they checkedout to make sure bombs arent attached??? Never seen them do that.

I agree with the poster this gate check is for show. I do not feel safer nor more threatened at Disney post or pre 9/11.

As far as top notch disney security , many times I see people driving in bus areas right up to gate, that should be more threatening than a juice box in a diaper bag, I have witnessed shop lifting, been burnt by cigarettes in lines at rides, smelled pot smoke

I could rant on and on. But won't

Have a Magical Day.

Just wondering why you think its ridiculous...
Because they only do it at the parks. You can got to any hotel or water park without a check of any type. On my last few visits to the resorts I was not even asked for my ID. Maybe they finally recognize me after my weekly visits for the last 22 years.

When I was going through the security check at MGM last month, the security guard stopped me and told me very seriously, he could not let me in the park! I was totally astonished and asked why and he told me I was carrying "contraband". I was a little confused until he told me I was carrying "a loaded banana"! I had a few snacks in our backpack! We all had a good laugh!

I agree that anything is better than nothing; besides, no security check can be 100%. Even with the increased security in airports, a lot of things get past security. (I've even brought no-nos on airplanes - unaware, of course!) Perhaps the Disney gate security can be improved, but I think the bag checks are worth it even if they only ever stop one person from bringing something dangerous into the parks.
