What?!?! This is all news to me. I could care less about the Animal kingdom parade as it was our least favorite but canceling the Pixar Parade?! That was our favorite! Also, the MK parades? I can't see getting rid of Spectro Magic ever! It's been around forever and there would be an out cry like crazy! I wonder if Pixar went down in flames because of the RIFD interference problems. To which I would say (for the first time) Disney is destroying the magic of planning and possibly attending with the
MASSES of troubles they are having thanks to their new "technology". Time to get your crap together guys! Really hoping there is some serious clarifications made at
D23 because the fandom is getting unruly!
Pixar's been gone for 4 months now, with somewhere in the realm of little-to-no fandom outcry. Personally, the last DHS parade I really
missed was Stars and Motorcars (what was that, 2 parades ago?). As far as Spectro, it's been gone for 3(4?) years now, and while I remember a medium-sized fandom outcry, for the most part the grand return of the Main Street Electrical Parade was rather successful.
As far as the Pixar parade being cancelled, I don't think it had anything to do with RFID problems. I'm also not sure how much consumer troubles are actually going on due to the new technology (probably more than I think...). The MagicBand/Fastpass+ is only in testing right now--any problems we hear about with that right now are good things, because they're being discovered and hopefully fixed while still in the testing phase, before full roll-out.
I don't expect them to make any announcements regarding the cancellation of parades at D23. If they are actually cancelling parades, the last place they'd want to announce it is at a mass convention of the people who would find parade cancellation most upsetting. If they're not cancelling parades, then it makes no logical sense for them to even so much as acknowledge those rumors at all, never mind refute them publicly--they'd want to spend all that time on all-positive announcing, as opposed to negative acknowledgement followed by positive refutation. If they are simply replacing parades with new parades, D23 would be a perfectly acceptable place to announce that, but honestly, so would a nice press conference or press release, and the press conference/release would be the better place to do so (indirectly, so as to avoid any even minor amount of direct, immediately publicized negative backlash). So no, I don't think we'll hear anything about the possible cancellation of parades at D23. If they are actually cancelling parades, and they felt the need to announce it months in advance--which with Disney isn't necessarily likely--I'd suspect they would cancel it shortly after the Expo, when the Disney blogging community will be busy with all the happenings of D23 and might miss a small, non-publicized cancellation announcement for at least a few days.
Honestly, I think if you're hoping for clarifications on anything at D23, you're going to be disappointed. Disney has already issued a statement basically saying they're not announcing any of the big expansions rumored to be happening at DHS at D23 this year. There's a rumor going around suggesting that Disney might cover some Avatarland expansion news at D23, which I think is likely, as expansion is a positive-sounding topic and since it's an ongoing process already, it's not like they're announcing something that will cost Disney even more money. I'd expect a rehashing of the original Avatarland announcement, with a few exciting buzzwords specifically tied to the current plans for the topic, but with little-to-no real substance. There might also be some exciting but insubstantial talk about FastPass+/MyMagic+/MagicBand/My Disney Experience/NextGen in general, but with as few actual hard facts and intricate details as possible. As several of these are still in testing phase, they won't be announcing anything that they're not completely tested and sure of already, which consists at this point of much of the whole MyMagic+ experience. We'll probably get some news based on what they do know from completed testing, and hopefully a time frame for complete rollout. Nothing that they can't spin positively (like the 1 park/day-only FastPass+ system) is likely to be confirmed at the Expo. And they won't be "clarifying" anything that's in the rumors online--the most they would do is announce something that already exists in online rumor form, and they'll only make announcements about rumors they can spin positively--so nothing like the cancellation of parades or the bugs in the NextGen system.
Will the lack of substantial announcements at D23 (unless I and a number of other posters are very, very wrong and Disney was also lying when it stated that there would be no major expansion announcements at D23) make the fandom unruly? Personally, I think the fandom has been unruly for a number of years. We're all human, and until Disney does everything perfectly all the time forever, we'll be upset about different things. Having lurked on these boards for many years and posted for a year or so now, I've noticed unhappiness about everything from napkin design to New Fantasyland--and don't get me started on Avatarland.
But we keep going back. We can all get as unruly on the Internet as we'd like, but as long as we keep going back, we're not really accomplishing anything (not like we'd accomplish anything by not going back anyway, as the Disney "fandom" of the Internet makes up only a small percentage of their yearly attendance). Disney has proven that they can do almost anything they want with virtually no repercussions, because the people still keep coming back.
Also, for what it's worth, I do still miss Spectromagic. I like the Main Street Electrical Parade, don't get me wrong, but I love Spectro. I'm with you on wishing that one didn't go away/would make a grand comeback MSEP-style.
