Gas prices going even higher???

I have wondered about they way things were back in the 70's when there was a shortage and they lowered the speed limit and most people drove small cars to save on gas. Maybe we should go back to that...I don't know. I do know that from reading other threads there are alot of people that drive big vehicles that use tons of gas and they swear they will not change that. It seems like if it worked back then it might work now but the attitudes of people are so different now days then they were back then. Some people are just so ME ME ME and I won't change my ways for anything. It is sad. As long as folks keep buying the big vehicles that use so much gas then the Big oil companies will keep charging more because of the ones that refuse to change. I am sure I will get flamed for stating that too. If I could afford a hybrid car I would buy one but it is way out of my budget also.

I'm not going to flame you because I completely agree. I had to fill up this afternoon and gas is $2.47 a gallon! It was $2.33 on Friday. I was really pissed to see this Hummer in front of me. I'm not even going to say what I want to say about that car and its kind. It's obscene.

Let's see--on Thursday morning, I watched the attendant raise the price on the sign 10 cents higher. It then went up about 3-4 cents the next day. Last night, it went up 7 cents.

It is really bad. I drive a small car and since I work in a school lunchroom I don't know how I will make my gas budget work. I don't make much money and I used to get by with $40-50 a month but today I filled up and I paid $20 for 3/4 tank of gas and that will last me about 9 days if I am lucky. I was going to reward myself next year with a new car (for my promation this past January) and get a Small SUV but I hear they have lousy gas mileage so I guess when I am able to get another car it will probably be even smaller than what I drive now(Mitsubishi Mirage). I wish I lived closer to work and church but it is a 15 mile one way trip so I can not cut that...I have to work.

I drive an SUV. It's not a huge gas guzzler, but it is an SUV and uses more gas than the previous cars that I owned. I have no choice. Where I live, I need 4 wheel drive in order to drive to work in the winter. That was the only reason I bought it.

You can have excellent clearence and 4 wheel drive in a nongas guzzling vehicle, just fyi

I would buy one too! I bet if they lowered the price on the hybrids there would a lot of people who would make the switch. Alas, for now, they are out of my price range.

What you pay over the same model of nonhybrid car, you get back with the tax break

I actually don't get the whole "I need an SUV" argument for winter driving. I used to live on a very very very steep hill and never had a problem getting my little Tercel up it during storms.

Well the car I used to have wouldn't make it up the hills. Not to mention when the schools are closed, they don't plow our roads right away.

When I am driving through 2 ft of snow from the end of Oct. to the beginning of April, even into April, I will take my truck any day over a car.

Counties in our areas cannot afford salt and they lay down sand.

If I would be in a warmer climate that doesn't have to deal, with ice, snow, then I would drive a car. Otherwise bring your vehicles to the UP in Michigan and drive a week in our shoes, then let's see what you have to say.

I don't have to prove to anyone either why I drive a big truck, I just wanted too. Sorry

I drive 50 miles each way to and from work. If it keeps going higher I won't be able to afford to DRIVE to work.

I know one thing...it's already affecting what I spend. I wanted to go to the mall today, but forget it. It's about 20-25 miles from my house. It cost me $30 to fill up from 1/2 tank the other day. I won't be going shopping very often.

Depending on the MPGs your vehicle gets, have you actually calculated how much a trip to the mall would be at todays price vs. last year?

For example, if your car gets 20 mpgs and it's 20-25 miles to the mall, that would be about 2-3 gallons of gas for the trip. If last year gas was $2/gallon, that trip would cost $4-6. At todays price of say $2.50, that trip would cost about $5-7.50. Is a difference of $1 to $1.50 really that much. If you bought something on sale and saved $10, you'd now be saving only $9 (or so).

I highly doubt that gas prices are going to go down even if all the SUVs are scrapped. What we don't buy, China or India will.

I'm with tiggersmom2 - I shouldn't have to justify to anyone why I drive what I drive, and so long as I can afford to buy the gas for it, it isn't anyone else's business.

As far as I know, the price we pay for gas/diesel is out of our hands. No matter what we might do, it will make no difference. The people bidding on oil futures helps set the price and since they are now bidding in the mid $60s/barrel and some say it might be closer to $100s/barrel in the not too distant future, the only place for fuel prices to go is up.

My little 1987 Toyota gets 36 to 40 mpg and my DW's bigger and newer and safer car gets 20 to 28mpg but we also have a RV that we use for our trips to go to FW that gets 8 to 10mpg. If some one wants to flame us, then so be it, but we need our little get aways for our sanity. Just keep in mind that there are some lucky people who get to drive around in their 8 to 10mpg motorhomes and they might put on 10,000 miles in a month.

Now if you really want to pick on somebody, then you only have to look at those new huge personal yatchs that require $500,000.00 or more just to fill up and there are many new ones being built as we write. Really though, 1/2 million dollars to fill up is nothing when the price for the boat is $300,000,000.00+. That's right, $300,000,000.00 plus.
