Hi,
I'm doing a bit of research for my parents who are building a new house. They want to include a gas fireplace insert but we're unsure of the specs we should be looking at.
They aren't using it for heating purposes....purely decorative....what should I be looking for as far as BTU etc.

Sorry for my ignorance....we've only ever burned wood!

Thanks

There is pretty much no gas insert (why an insert???) that would even come close to the BTU output of a wood burning stove, so I wouldn't let that be your main concern if it's just going to be cosmetic.

Go for the one that gives you the features/look they want. Higher end models will have better log units and better/nicer surrounds. Some come with remote controls, some are thermostaticaly controled. You might want a blower if anyone is going to be right next to it so you don't end up with hot spots.

Oh yeah, get a vented one as opposed to a vent-free. The moisture output and stink will kill you in a new house.
