Gardening Question?

In our new garden, we have a plant that we are having trouble identifying! My mum says it's called "Old Man" - but I can't find any reference to it at all in my books. Has anyone heard of this and knows the proper name. I cant very well go round saying "Ive got Old Man in my garden" can I? I'll get put away!!! LOL

LOL - I had thought of putting a photo on the post Tim, but then thought I would only be confirming what you've all thought for ages ....................... that I am going slightly mad!!!!! lOL


We have hunted through all the garden books we have, and I now think it is a Rosemary Bush! Would this tie in with any thoughts here?

I assume you mean Rosemary, as in the herb? Has a very strong smell...narrow spikey evergreen leaves, and has pretty pale blue flowers?

Yes Claire - that sounds like it, although I havent seen any Blue flowers yet? It does have a beautiful fragrance though - I just didnt realise it was Rosemary because it looks slightly different from the one I bought for my Herb Garden. Maybe because this is much bushier and sort of wild looking?

Janice, if your plant is a rosemary but seems to have a more lax habit, it could be Rosmarinus "seven seas" rather than the culinary Rosmarinus officinalis. Seven seas is quite common and would appear bushier than the normally upright rosemary you may be used to. There is also a white flowered version.
It's also possible that the plant is a member of the Artemesia family. Some of those resemble rosemary and are very aromatic.

Wow Carole - I am impressed! LOL

We went for a ride out this afternoon and we stopped by a Church. In the front, standing up from the wall was a similar plant but 'softer'. The aroma was just a nice, but the whole plant had a softer look to it. Now the Rosemary in my garden that I bought from the Garden centre and the bush that was already here are definetly the same - this one we saw this afternoon could well be the other type you mention?

Sounds like the plant we have in our garden. I always thought it was from the rosemary family because of the smell and yes, it does have little blue leaves.

Only another 3million unknown plants to go in our garden then
