Let me give you a tad bit of back story. I work on a street that is both residential and business. We have a parking lot but we only have privileges every other month. Our street is close to downtown and is one of the few without parking meters. This makes it a popular place to park. This morning, in my daily battle for a spot, I noticed that some garbage cans were taking up a precious spot. I double parked, ran out moved the garbage cans and then parked in that spot. Now, I am sure I made someone mad by doing this. So, did I do something horrible or is it not that bad? What do you think, because I might have to decide whether or not to do it again in the future. :confused3

Parking spots are meant for cars to be parked in them, not trash cans. If it doesn't belong there, I would have moved it too.

Were the cans saving the spot or waiting for the garbage man? As long as you don't prevent people from having their garbage collected, I think it is ok.

I hate when people park in front of the mail box (we have rural delivery) because then the mail isn't delivered.

Saving parking spots in public parking areas is always wrong. I know around here they announce on the news about this as soon as they have to plow the city snow. You are in the right here.

Odds are, the cans were there to save a parking spot for someone. I'm sure the OP ticked off someone who thought they were going to have a parking spot when they got back, but I would have done the same thing. :thumbsup2

I never thought about those cans saving a spot! Wow, now I don't feel so bad. The garbage will still be collected because the sanitation workers bring the cans to the truck anyway. Thanks for the responses. I won't let guilt ruin my day. :thumbsup2

This was my first thought too! If you try this in Chicago during the winter (and it can be anything from a garbage can to a lawn chair) don't be surprised if you come back to find your tires slashed!

Ok, noted. I will not try it in Chicago during the winter. Thanks! :thumbsup2 How about Chicago during the summer?

Oh summers are fine for parking! But if you don't know if the person you're talking to is a Sox fan or a Cub fan, refrain from stating your own preferance until you know who they root for! ;)

Were they full or empty?

In my neighborhood (which isn't a business district, so it's different), the trash collectors won't go around a car to pick up the cans, so we leave them on the edge of the street. I'd be ticked if someone moved them and they didn't get picked up. But I don't put them in a parking spot either.

If they were empty, maybe the trash collectors put them there.
