Garage Sale woes....

idk what would be involved, but if you can get a tax write off.. how about donating stuff to the red cross for all the families losing their homes to wildfires and floods?

I don't understand why you'd sell off underwear in the first place....is your DH growing still?? Why is he not using it until it's worn out?:confused3

And I believe you that people buy up used underwear right away. I've seen it and I don't understand it but people do it.

Blech, used underwear give me the heeby jeebies. I am weird about that though.

I had one garage sale and would never do it again. I had had nice items broken, things stollen. My husband had tools in the sale and the men before we even opened were worse than the women. All the tools went in the first 10 minutes and then 2 hours into the sale a man came looking for the tools and I told him they already sold. He got so angry and told me I was lying and it was false advertisement to get people to come to the sale. I finally called my husband to come handle it. That man literally yelled at my husband for a good half hour. It ended up he expected my husband to go find more tools to sell him because he kept saying false advertisement was illegal and he was going to call the police. DH finally told him to go ahead. Talk about mentally ill.

We have a long driveway and the last day of the sale an elderly lady blocked the top of the driveway and was yelling for me to come over to her car. I walked down there and she asked how much I wanted for a big fisher price doll house I had with tons of the big plastic furniture and dolls for little ones. I told her it was $20 for everything but I would sell it to her for $15. She said that is way to much I will give you $2 and no more. I looked at her and told her to have a nice day I would donate it before I sold it to her for full price now.

What I should have done was just had a stock of stupid signs and handed them to people who did stupid things. The only problem with that is I didn't have enough paper and string.

I really hate having garage sales, too much work for people to try to get something for free. I will donate for the tax write off or just give the stuff away. I do sell a few items on ebay...my used clothing. I had lap band surgery so every size I drop I list the clothing there since I wear it very little and all of my clothing is name brands. I sometimes make more than I pay since many items are from sales.
Funny though, my used bathing suits sell for the most and I am skeeved by the idea of buying a used bathing suit, but hey to each their own!

Im sorry, but I cant believe either that u would sell used underwear, I dont care how the condition is, used is used!

If I make a few hundred at a garage sale, I'm happy. $500 would make me happy for sure! I haven't bought or sold used underwear at a sale but I've seen plenty at garage sales. I see no issues as long as it's washed??? As long as we're not talking thongs here. People resell cloth diapers and I've bought them used already (clean of course but still used...) Why judge :confused3

My mom's neighborhood had a sale last month and we took some stuff over for that, sold a decent amount. We had one lady and her granddaughter stop by and the little girl bought a pair of shoes for $1, then returned a few minutes later and asked to return them because her grandma didn't like them. We did not allow the return as the grandmother had been with her when she was looking at them and given the little girl the money so the little girl ran down the sidewalk and gave the bag to her grandmother who then yelled at her and shook her fist, then dumped the shoes out of the bag in the neighbor's yard, kept the bag and went on her way. Everyone at our sale was wondering if they had really seen that, it was very strange. Anyway, my niece ran down to the neighbor's and picked up the shoes, which then sold again a short time later. You just never know what you will see.

Garage sales aren't worth it IMO. I'd rather donate the items & take a tax deductions. As for used underwear :scared:.

I don't see a problem selling kids underwear at a garage sale. There is obviously a market for it. Since most people don't sell it, I can see why your's sells out right away. I would assume the purchaser washes it before wearing.

OH MY GOSH!! Seriously people-they are used boxer shorts! Do you not sell used swimsuits in your garage sales? Swimsuits are WAY nastier in my opinion, because there's a good chance that kids have PEED in them!! Oh, & I didn't care that the underwear sold before the shoes (& before 100 other "like new" or new items), I just couldn't believe they DIDN'T sell! They paid $.75 for used Old Navy flip flops. I paid $1-$2 a pair for these, & almost got all of my money back for them! :confused3

We live in Texas, which borders Mexico. MANY of our shoppers buy TONS of underwear, socks, towels, and all sorts of (cheaper priced) clothes to send back to their family in Mexico.

I agree with many of you--we have stuff stolen & broken. As they are browsing through things they just chunk them left & right, disregarding the fact that I'll have to reorganize them immediately. I'm assuming these are the same people who throw items around in stores, not picking up after themselves. :headache:

We give just as much away to charities as we sell in the garage sale. I always give jackets & jogging suits, so they'll keep the needy warm in the winter. I have about $1000 worth of Kasper suits to give to a shop which clothes troubled women who are trying to enter the workforce.

It's more the way the people coming to the garage sale behave. When I've had them in the past, most of the shoppers treat my items terribly - they toss the around and knock them on the ground. I have at least two or three items get broken each time I have a sale, and the people who broke are never never apologetic or offer to pay. If I have a $50 jacket marked for $2, they want to give me $.50 for it. They are rude and disrespectful, and every year I swear I'm never having another one. I'm thinking about moving in the very near future, and I desperately need to get rid if a lot of my stuff before we go, but I cringe every time I think about having a garage sale. I'll probably end up having one and just telling myself it's one morning out of my life. I can deal with the stress and inconsiderate shoppers for one morning!

This! One woman put 5 of my Dooney and Bourke hand bags on her arm and stated I'll give you $10.00! I told HER ARE U KIDDING ME! NO! They are $15.00 a piece, she then threw them down. UGH~~~ Yes people are rude. If you want to sell something for a $1.00 they ask you if you would take .50 cents.! RUDE! I did have a few asian women buy my coach purse's for $30.00 each.

:sad2: I notice a lot of time they want to buy for cheap and then re-sell them online for way more:mad:

I've donated bags and bags and bags of clothing over the years, many items still with tags on. But I'd never, ever even donate underwear or swimsuits or anything intimate, so I really can't imagine selling them. :scared1:

I learned my lesson about yardsales. Don't waste your time pricing. Get tables and throw the stuff out there. If people want it they will ask. Yardsale people are a different breed for sure.

I had a nice baby carrier (you know those backpacks you carry your kid in) I know I paid 40 bucks for it and it was used maybe twice. I had 3 dollars on it and a woman tried to haggle me down. There was no way. I would rather burn it in the front yard than give it to you for less than 3 dollars. Lol!

I just went through this. I had new with tags Gymboree and a lady walked away in a huff after I told her they were more then .25! <sigh>

we had a garage sale first weekend in June -- and apparently just didn't have anything anyone wanted..

All we sold was a table and 4 chairs -- for $80 for the lot..

the biggest issue i think is that we a re right on the edge of civilization..

one block east south and north of us is farm ---

Yeah, we made the mistake of trying to have a garage sale while living halfway down a dead-end street. Posted the sale on Craigslist and everything...we made a whole $37.50. :rotfl:

Never again!

Yard sales, flea markets, auctions, love all of these. I just don't get up at the crack of dawn to go to the yard sales like many people. Find a lot of bargains that I can't pass up...and never use. Just gets sold in one of our yard sales.

You could have made $8-$10 on those shoes at a big consignment sale. If you have nice, name brand clothes, don't even mess with garage sales. The people that shop them don't care about the brands or condition - they just want rock bottom prices.

The first time I sold consignment I was bothered by the cut that the sale organizers take, but I still came out WAAAAAY ahead over what I would have made at a garage sale. It's a different crowd with a different mindset - they are willing to pay for the name brands.

I hate yard sales. When I was younger and poorer, I did go, mostly for toys or clothes for my kids. However, I hate when the people who are selling the stuff try to recoup the money they spent on the item. Really, you should be selling it for about 20% or less of what you paid for it. In my town, the people want almost half or more-really, I can do better at a sale and buy new. I don't understand that thinking "I paid ___ for it" and I want it back. I think if you have a yard sale, it is to get rid of stuff you don't want to see ever again. If something means that much that you need almost the amount you paid-keep the item. I hate yard sales and I never go. And, honestly, I cannot imagine giving up a saturday to have one. I would rather donate the items and pick up some more hours at my job if I needed the money so bad.
