19 Kids and Counting' Star -- Three Rifles, No Ammo
1/3/2011 2:20 PM PST by TMZ Staff

In an effort to give an Indonesian foreign exchange student the real "USA" experience -- one of the stars of the TLC reality show "19 Kids and Counting" handed the guy a GUN and told him to smile!

The kid double-fisting the firearms is 20-year-old John David Duggar -- the 3rd of 19 brothers and sisters featured on the show.

John David's father, Jim Bob Duggar, tells TMZ ... JD and the exchange student were heading out to target practice over the holidays -- and posed for this photo before they opened fire.

Jim Bob insists all three weapons were UNLOADED -- and were each "standard firearms purchased at a licensed gun shop."

He adds, "All of the older boys, including John David, are well-trained in gun safety and always supervised when handling guns."

Personally, I don't see how posing with semi-automatic firearms like a couple of wannabe gangstas is the "real USA experience", but whatever. That poor exchange student. I wonder if he thinks this is what the typical American family is like. The Duggar kid is really hooked up. Besides the two crossed guns he is holding, he also has a handgun stuffed in his pocket. Guess you have to be prepared when the end of the world is at hand.

In related armageddon news, Justin Bieber was seen romancing Selena Gomez on a private yacht this past weekend...

Easy does it, I don't think everyone with a gun is a Branch Davidian waiting to happen.

Yes, but after seeing that photo, I do fear for the safety of Selena Gomez. How could Justin possibly defend her against twenty angry Duggars and a heavily armed Indonesian foreign exchange student who happens to be here in order to have a real USA experience.

Well, if they wrap themselves in suitably protective cupboard armor and think happy thoughts the Duggars and FESs et.al won't be able to see them with their Jedi mind powers because the force will be suppressed.

Wow I lost alot of respect for the Duggars. I liked them for the most part but I'm sorry that picture is not cool. JB wants you to believe that they are properly trained in firearms but him & Michelle can't even figure out proper carseat usage so how can they figure out gun safety?

I have no problem with the Duggar story (except: wow, that's really not the best way to get the "typical American" experience). But I feel for Selena Gomez. Justin Bieber has some pretty crazy fans!

John David looks to me like a typical outdoorsman headed out for target pracitce. If you are familiar with sportsman, this is exactly how they look when heading out to practice.

It's just all those raging hormones in teenage girls. Remember when he did that photo shoot with one of the Kardashian sisters a few months back. The same thing happened. She got death threats from his fans also. They're rabid, but how dangerous could they really be - they're Justin Bieber fans, after all.

All he's missing is a bandoleer and a cigar.

I, admittedly, don't personally know any hunters. To me the jacket and cap seem normal. A rifle would seem normal. But holding 3 guns, including a semi automatic? Are deer and fowl really getting that dangerous these days? Do you need that many weapons for target practice? And is it normal to hunt with handguns? Is that typical with hunters today? Having never been, maybe I'm wrong and it is.

No you don't use handguns and semi automatics for hunting. However if you own them you do use them for target practice. People shoot guns as a hobby.

I have no problem with the Duggar's having guns or using them for target practice. Having grown up where hunting was a major activity, it seems totally normal.

Now the Beiber fans making death threats is kinda cracking me up. Seriously, I don't think Selena needs to be that worried about a bunch of hormonal, pre-teen girls who are probably sitting on their bed, holding their teddies and crying about their lost love. :rotfl:

No, no its not. I grew up in a hunting cluture, and the gun the exchange studnet is holding is NOT for hunting, it an anti-personell weapon, nor would anyone use 3 weapons at once for hunting. If they are going out for target practice and want to pratice with all the weapons, that is NOT the way to transport them safely. A sportsman would have more respect for his weapons and for safety than to pose with 3 of them at a time, unsecured like that. Even a supposed unloaded weapon should be treated at all times as if it were loaded. A round in the chanber can be missed, and no one should take that chance. This kid has obviously NOT been taught any of this. I don't care for the Duggars in general, and this photo reinforces that.

The Bieber's hair will protect her. Don't worry.

I totally agree. They are supposed to locked in the cases and transported in a safe manner!:sad2:

How do you know there aren't cases with locks on the ground in front of them? They aren't in the middle of "transporting" them when this picture was taken.

I mean, I really don't care for the Duggars, nor do I care for "gangsta" like activity, but honestly, I think these kids are headed out for target practice and took a fun picture beforehand.

For Pete's sake, why on earth do people get so worked up about things these so called "celebrity" families do? No one would bat an eye if I took a photo of myself with my arsenal (I have quite a collection(safely locked away)) and posted it on the internet, so why does anyone care if the Duggar's or anyone else does it?

Yes, there are those who shoot guns as a hobby. You relax your way, they relax theirs.

And how many do you need to for target practice? When all four of us go to the range, lets see - we have my .22 Walter and .22 Sig Mosquito. We also will take 1 or 2 of the .45's, 1 or 2 of the 9 mm's, the 38 and once in a while just to put some rounds thru it, we break out DH's King Cobra revolver. And if we go to the outdoor range, we take 1 or 2 of the rifles to shoot. If our nephew goes with us, he always takes all four of his guns to practice with.

The Duggars have two exchange students living with them- the other is a girl. I feel so bad for them. I have no doubt in my mind that's what they think the typical American family is like. *sigh*

The pic doesn't show much detail, but it appears that the handgun is secured in a holster of some type, not 'stuffed in his pocket'.

Like many people in this thread, you apparently don't know what 'semi-automatic' means in terms of firearms.

It merely means that the firearm does not need to be manually cocked in between shots. With each squeeze of the trigger, one bullet is fired, the used casing is expelled and the next bullet is chambered. Most modern hunting rifles are, indeed, semi-automatic.

While I can't speak to the rifle held by the exchange student, rifles like the AR-15 varient held by John David are known to be used by some hunters. The general problem with these rifles for deer hunting is that they typically use a .223 round that is generally thought to be too light to be sure to take down the animal. Heavier .223 rounds can be used, but doing so limits your effective range. The best solution (barring using a different rifle) is to replace the upper receiver and barrel with those that are made for larger bullets.
