As has been pointed out on another thread, it remains to be seen if the film will find an audience, but at least there is some critical success.

Is Gangs of New York based on another work? There is something naggingly familiar about it ... it looks a lot like Les Miz in the commercials.

Not only will Gangs of New York be a huge hit, but Daniel Day Lewis will win the oscar for best actor (which I predicted the first time I saw a preview for Gangs of New York, during a showing of Insomnia)

I think it is based on a work of non-fiction or a historical novel. It's about New York in pre-civil war days and it leads up to the draft riots.
