I saw a thread about overweight children and someone mentioned some games they used to play as a kid. They happened to mention some games that were my very favorites. I loved kickball best (I'm not too coordinated and kickball doesn't require great hand/eye coordination, lol), I also played more games of tether ball, four square, hide and seek and dodge ball (or elimination) than I can count.

I have seven siblings (and were all very close in age, stair-steps definitely) so there were always many kids at our house (kids attract kids, lol) and on any given afternoon it was easy to round up enough willing players for a game or two.

I also lived in a part of the country that had warm or at least tolerable weather for playing outside at least 9-10 months of the year.

We did play more organized sports at school (mostly softball, baseball and basketball) but I wasn't ever very good at them so I only played on gym days as required.

What kinds of games did you play? And how often did you play games outside of organized sports?

I loved to play all kinds of games in the summer and I still do if I can find a bunch of kids. :p Games like, "Mother May I", "Red Light, Green Light", "Four Square", "Kick the Can", "Hide and Seek", tag etc. I loved to roam along the stream bank in the woods with my German Shepard. I could do that for hours too! My favorite activity then and now, was/is swimming. I got in the pool right after breakfast and didn't get out except to eat lunch, take bathroom breaks or when my mom made me. :p I could swim and pretend for hours! I loved to play "Marco? Polo!", pool volleyball, make whirlpools, pretend I was a mermaid etc. etc.

I NEVER went out in the winter, except to make the occasional snow angel, or sleddown the hill because my parents MADE me go out. :p I hated the winter then and I hate it now! LOL! :teeth: I still make an occasional snow angel, but that's it! I only go from my house to the car or the car to my house and walk my dog! I hate the cold, especially the cold wind!

I was only involved in organized sports (softball and field hockey) until high school. Partying was my preferred sport in high school. :p

As kids we were always outside! My favorites were Tag, kickball, soccer, dodgeball, butts-up (yes, it is a strange name for a game), hide and seek, freeze tag, red light/green light, simon says. We'd play anything, croquet, frisbee, or go on bike rides around the neighborhood.

Ah...the good ol' days.

Wow, the memories are coming back. A few games that I remember on to of what ya'll said is hopscotch, chinese jumprope, dodgeball and a game called 7-up.

I've always loved Red Rover and Kickball. Our DDs will be old enough pretty soon!

We lived in the country with only 1 paved road thru out the entire county. Our home was about 8 miles from the paved road in a neighborhood where the houses were about 100 yards apart. We would play "hide n seek" using our bikes. Typical game would take about 1-2 hours before everyone was found.

Red Rover & Mother May I.

Which, now that I think about it...I have no clue how to play Mother May I - I've totally forgotten!

Remember the steel roller skates that you used a key to clamp to your shoes. Now that was fun! :teeth:

Building forts in the woods by the creek, riding bikes and going on picnics with your friends when you went hiking. Not to mention the town parks where there was hop scotch, tether ball, dodge ball, jump rope with friends. And a game played in a box with 3 holes and hockey sticks, Bockey? I think. Swimming, Red Rover, tag, etc, etc. etc. I always hate to hear kids say the're bored. No imagination any more everything is electronic. :sad2:
