My family moved from southern CA to to northern CA when I was eight. Lake Tahoe was approx 1 1/2 hour drive. So we drove up there about half a dozen times and my parents gambled. My sister and I were put in the arcade with lots of change, they checked on us often. I'm sure it was just the novelty of it, they never won much. Years later, I went up with my future husband and I just played the nickel? slots to see how I long I could go before losing it all. He was at the blackjack tables with his grandmother-she was a frequent gambler and all the dealers knew her by name-she had lots of money.

My dad once said that you might as well just go in the casino and throw a twenty dollar bill on the ground, be done with it That's basically how I feel about it too.

Many eons ago I had a boyfriend who was a gambling addict. To me, there is nothing at all entertaining about gambling.

I think the Casino would argue that gambling is their bread and butter.

It is what allows them to play their employees.

Compulsion is evil.

gambling Happens to be what we need to blame to not have to take responsibility for our own actions, like alcohol, drugs, fast cars, fast women, and anything else we enjoy but aren’t responsible enough to handle.

Gambling is not inherently evil. It is just so easy to blame for our own problems !

I have only been in a casino once, I gambled the free $10 they gave me and then stopped, but I was definitely tempted to keep playing. That was an eye opener for me, and I don't need to go again. I just wanted to be able to say I've done it and now I have.

My new gambling philosophy is to play either Blackjack (until my kitty, separate from any winnings, had been exhausted or I ran out of money set aside) or Roulette, where I bet on the odds in a similar way. Safe. NEVER CHASE YOUR DEBTS.

It's a lot harder than first glance. The casinos have gotten very good at dealing with counters. The Casinos will instantly back you off once you're a known counter. Further, Most will not allow at all the kind of betting it takes to make money at counting at all. Many actually also have their own counting system and behavior is scrutinized in relation to their count. They will catch you. Others will let you change a bet amount only when the shoe is shuffled. Others will reject any large increase in betting at any time it occurs. So you have to have a system to disguise it that they haven't experienced before. Furthermore, once you're caught, you have to ID to get your winnings. So they'll have your picture, and your name, and information to pass around to every casino on the planet. Even assuming you can fly under the radar, and count, you can still go down a bundle.

Never did it for me.
Sort of tough for me to ignore all the bright fancy expensive things in a casino and not have the epiphany that all the people who lose are paying for it.
If the facilities pay out they can't afford the glitz.
I spend a lot of time counting a lot of loss based on the cost of what I see.

Also, no open seating for disabled people so not what I call accommodating.

I was taught that the magic number was 16. I think you have to set that number and Stay With It.
My husband loved to play blackjack and he won several tournaments. He used all his gambling money to buy things he wanted, IE: a new motor for his boat, tools, etc. Then one year, he started losing those tournaments,and he promptly quit. Just like that. We used to go every weekend. He hasn't gambled since, but he says that he got his money back winning and buying what he wanted and needed. I guess that's the way to do it.

However, I do love gambling. We live in Mn. and we have casinos everywhere! We have one 10 minutes away , one 30 minutes, another 45 minutes away, 2 one hours away, and several 90 miles or more away. There are just too many, but it is legal for the Native American Tribes to have gambling casinos, so there A Lot of them.

I only take what I can afford out of my "mad money" and that's it. I usually take my elderly Mom, and we play bingo, eat good meals in the restaurants, get the freebies, and have a great time staying onsite with a comped room overnight. To us, it's a time of fun, good food, and just being together. We usually only go once or twice a year, and of course not at all during covid.

On the other hand, I have a friend whose SO has a gambling problem, and my friend has to control all their money and only gives the SO enough for lunches at work. It is quite a sad problem and very difficult for addicted gamblers to quit, it seems.

As long as it's an affordable form of entertainment it seems fine to me. It can be a problem if you are addicted, of course, just as in other addictions.

What stuck with me was that when the news crews stuck around to film the aftermath they set up on the parking lot and you could see the casino floor - where people were already filling the slot machines with quarters like nothing had happened, with the front of the building blown clear off;

The casino operation wanted to open part of their gambling area that was not damaged. And they did build this big wall and put a big picture window in it so that the gamblers could watch the FBI process the crime scene for the next few weeks.

So in case you had any doubt, no, the casinos do not care about you or your safety. They want you in the front door gambling away.

I remember visiting Atlantic City in 1989 with my Dad and my sister. I'd hever been in a casino before and was struck by how it was full of elderly people with buckets of quarters who were just sitting and playing slots. Dad told me that they were rich retirees who had nothing to do all day but sit and play slots.

We each played a few rounds of slots. Dad got $20 worth of quarters, lost it all at the slot machines, and then quit.

Michigan has online betting now so we're slammed every commercial break with lots of internet gambling ads. They make it sound so easy and lucrative to hook the players, and it's pretty sad when you know that the're probably getting a lot of desperate people addicted to it.

Casinos are cunning things. They will do EVERYTHING in their power to get you in, keep you in and get you addicted.

Pleasing smells. Calming colours. Cunning floor plans that you get lost in. No clocks. No doors or windows. Helpful staff. Loud "success" noises and lights. Free drinks and food. The list goes on. All to get you in and addicted.
