Hi Everyone! Has anyone here ever joined a Galloway training group?

I am considering joining the program at my local running store. It begins next week and finishes in March, which is perfect for the Princess 1/2 Marathon which I plan to run. (That IS 35 weeks, though...) I'm training for a 10k right now and find that I have a lot of questions, which is why I think an organized 1/2 program might be good. Also, the price is right! I am just not used to running with other people - it's usually just me and the mp3 player. :)

Has anyone ever done a training group like this? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks!

Hi Allison,
I might not be the right one to answer this because I always run alone. I tried a group a couple of times but our pace, distance, etc was never the same so I ended up running alone anyway. Had to get up 30 min early just to meet up with them. There is a big difference between getting up at 5:00 am and sleeping in until 5:30 am on Saturday :)

Besides, I like to run when I feel like it. I mean I still follow a training plan and work our everyday, but the time of day depends on when I get home from work, how I feel on the weekend, etc. Some need the structure, I don't. I have enough structure and schedules in the rest of my life.

But, others love running with peeps. Just hasn't worked out for me. There is something to be said for running with others through. Time passes more quickly and you can encourage each other.

So, if you think it is something you'd like to do, go for it. There is a lot to gain if it works for you and very little to lose if it doesn't.

enjoy,
Duane

The only reason my wife runs is because of her group.

We have been running the Daytona Beach Galloway group for several years. My wife has found a few in that group which match up very well. Now they do runs outside the group as well. We will be running with a group of them in about 3 hours at the ocean to watch the sunrise .

My wife and I will be doing a 10 mile run in Celebration Saturday morning. We are staying at the hotel Friday night. We will be doing 1r/1w at about an overall pace of 11:30.

PM me if you want to join us for all or part of it. I'll be glad to answer any questions about Galloway.

Jackie (MouseDogMom) runs with a Galloway group and Wendy (getnthinr) is a group leader. Might want to talk with them for more info.

Thanks everyone for the info and tips!

Duane, I feel the same way about running. I like to get out there just whenever the mood strikes me, too. Plus, I sometimes feel like running is the only time I get to spend by myself. That is something to think about.

Jim, I so appreciate the invite! Is this an organized event in Celebration? I know they have a 5k/10k in November but didn't know there was a 10 miler. I would so be up for it if we hadn't JUST moved - as of two weeks ago, we live in Sarasota now! I guess I need to change my location. :) It is a bit hard to accept that I no longer live in Disney-ville, though...

Allison - This is my third year with the Galloway group here in Raleigh, and I know I wouldn't still be doing long distance running without them. I only run with them for my long runs on the weekends, so all my midweek runs are solo and I have plenty of time to myself. I need the companionship for the long distances, so the group concept is great for me. And like you mentioned, there's always someone available to answer whatever questions you might have - there are people of all levels who have experience with just about everything. I ran with one pace group for 2 years, then moved up this year when a small group of us decided we were ready to challenge ourselves a little more. We also run together in the off season - even though there's no official group leaders, anyone who wants to run on Saturday meets and does 10 miles just to keep our base mileage up. We're actually the largest Galloway group in the country - over 400 members - so we may do things a little differently from other groups, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!

To bad you moved.

No, this is not an organized event. Just the wife and I.

I need to run 10 on Saturday and 26 on Sunday so I'm just hitting the road in Celebration and getting the long miles in. She is joining me for the shorter of the two runs.
