Gadhafi

Well, I'm not throwing a party over it, but just like with Saddam, I feel he got what he deserved in the end.

One part of this that troubles me is that other nations seemed to be OK with him for so long. He was always a nutcase but he was in power for over 40 years!

I don't celebrate his death. I am happy that he is out of power though.

I have no problem with them. I wish they would show more real pictures like this when stuff happens. too many people especially her in the US live in a sanitized, sugar coated, PC world and that is not how it really is in the world. Like I wish they would have kept showing the poor victims of The trade towers having to face that horrendous decision to throw themselves out of the windows or die a more horrible death. It is too easy to distance your self from reality now. Do you really think people would have felt so strongly about Vietnam if it was covered as wars are now? with no actual photos?

99% of the world does not live by our standards of justice and it is time for the masses to see this and wake up and remember this.

"An eye for an eye." - The Bible (Matthew 5:38)

"You have heard that it has been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you resist not evil: if anyone should hit your right cheek, turn to him the other cheek also. And if any man sues you for your coat, let him have all your clothes. If anyone forces you to walk a mile, walk two miles with him." - Matthew 5:38 - 41

I think that 99% is high but I do realize that many other nations have different philosophies. I'm not sure if we really need to 'see' the atrocities to understand that they occur.

I'm an athiest so that quote does nothing for me.

There are so many things that can be quoted from that book that have no meaning in my life, or are just plain destructive, so I don't even worry about it.

Just me though! :flower3:

DISCLAIMER: Not a religious discussion.

But the thing is, whenever we (or another big nation) goes into a country to try to get rid of the leader, we're the bad guy. So which is it? Get rid of evil dictators, or not???????

And I celebrated right along w/ the people of Libya when they said they were no longer terrified, and that they would have remained terrified if he was simply caught and brought to trial. For them, I'm thrilled w/ his death. And I could care less how his death happened, especially since it was by the people he ruled over. It should have been their choice, and it was. To be completely honest, I had a huge smile on my face hearing about it on the radio, and I shed a tear hearing a Libyan woman being interviewed and how happy she was.

I also don't purposefully subject myself to the images. I've been in a few gas stations the past few days w/ my kids, and we've not noticed one newspaper or picture. I don't get the newspaper at home, and barely watch the news on tv. I prefer the radio. The little I did see on tv, I was most disturbed by the Lockerbie images, not images of his death.

Thank you for posting the entire quote, not just the convenient bit that the general public/media usually tosses about.

Not, then a call for vengance, but a call for pacifism. :confused3

He was a mad man, one of many.
Killed so many innocent people.

Hope there isn't somebody crazier to take over where he left off...

Something tells me that what may end up there could be --in the long run--WORSE for the U.S. than he was.

I might feel differently if "the people of Libya" had actually gotten rid of him.

But something tells me that what may end up there could be --in the long run--WORSE for the U.S. than he was.

I have a feeling that this whole thing was far more than just a simple uprising of the population.
ITA.

Like I posted earlier, he was in power for a very long time and just recently somehow became a bad guy. That was both internally and to other nations. I think that the expression is that sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

I'm glad that the people of Libya were at least involved.

I have seen the video. A couple of times actually and I did not feel one bit of sympathy or remorse for his death. He deserved a lot worse then what he got. He was a sadistic, evil, coward. Don't let his last minutes of begging fool you, he would of shot you in the face himself if you were standing in front of him.

Those who live by the sword, die by the sword.

This. I felt nothing for his "begging." An eye for an eye...that doesn't bother me at all.

Not to get into religion, but it's a part of the Sermon on the Mount and follows the Beatitudes. Taken together they're all about what follower of Christ should believe and how they should behave. That particular section is considered the basis for all Christian pacifism. Uhm. . .if I go much further, I'm going to get points. Just try googling "Sermon on the Mount". It's a really beautiful passage. (In fact, I memorized it when I was in Jr. High for a competition. . .so I know it extremely well!)

But I thought the bible verse "does nothing for you"? Or is that unless it can be made to suit your stance? I have read many interpretations of it that would indeed justify what happened to Gadhafi.

My point in posting it was to counter the "weight" of your MLK quote. As in, one can pull quotes from important people to suit any of their needs.

My feeling on it? He probably would have been sentenced to death if he'd been caught anyway. They just skipped the middle man. I don't know that I personally would be able to mete out "frontier justice" like that, but I can understand the frenzy the people who found him were in. People who were oppressed by his tyrannical regime for so long.

I am not sure who now is the Best Dressed Dictator...I mean, Col Mommar was such a stylish guy!

Oh the 1st runner up has got to be Kim Jong Il.....

The question is: Do they become dictators because they are crazy, or do they go crazy because they are dictators?

The poster asked a question about the full context of the quote. I answered. It was a honest question that deserved an honest answer.

Except at least the MLK quote wasn't a deliberate tiny section of a quote meant to mislead... :sad2:

Something tells me that what may end up there could be --in the long run--WORSE for the U.S. than he was.

This is my worry. I'm very glad he is dead, but the new government is already stating that their legislation will be based on Sharia law, and that any existing laws that contradict it will be overturned. :headache:
