<font color=navy>This is being built in my neck of the woods:
Construction Underway for Sports Complex
at CSUDH Campus
A groundbreaking ceremony led by no less than world-class athletes Pete Sampras and Alexi Lalas, sports executives and local leaders, marked the beginning of the construction of a $120-million sports complex at the California University Dominguez Hills on February 26.
The complex, labeled the National Training Center (NTC) will be built over a sprawling 85-acre property, and will include two adjacent stadiums: a 27,000-seat soccer stadium which will become the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy, and a tennis stadium that can accommodate 13,000 spectators.
In addition, the project will involve the upgrade of its existing velodrome, inline roller hockey rink, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts and track & field facilities, and the construction of facilities and amenities such as training rooms, commissary, press facilities, office space, team store and a 12,000-sq. ft. restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
NTC will also be the permanent headquarters of the U.S. Soccer Federation and the Pete Sampras Tennis Academy. Discussions for the complex to become the training center for National Football Leagues San Diego Chargers are also currently underway.
At least 1,000-construction related and 300 permanent/part time jobs are expected to be created as a result of the project, with Carson residents getting a priority in the hiring process.
With May 2003 as its target date of completion, at least two major soccer events are already scheduled to take place at the NTC. These are the Major League championship game in 2003 and the All-Star game in 2004.
The sports complex, funded in full by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) is expected to bring in an annual revenue of $385,000 to the City of Carson.
