FW vs resorts?

Our family loves Disney and we love to camp, but we've never camped at Disney! Because of finances (or lack of!), we're considering switching our stay next Feb from the Poly to FW. I've always wanted to stay at the Poly, so even though I've been reading some great things about FW, I'm a little afraid I'll be disappointed. Has anyone else that has previously stayed at some of the resorts enjoyed their stay at FW more?

Also, when I booked FW today, she asked if I had thought about booking a golf cart. Do I really need one, especially since we'll have our own car?

Thanks so much for any input!

I really like FW. We have camped there 2 times. Previous trips included PO Riverside,Poly,GF,BW.
I think all the resorts have something special to offer. Fw has beautiful grounds, activites for kids, close access to mk. Since it is less per night than others, it gives us a chance to stay longer. It is nice not having to worry about the kids being too loud in the hallway or hotel room. There is more elbow room.
I only wish the pool was better themed with a slide and maybe a nicer snack bar with " real" drinks.
How about staying mostly at the fort and then 1 or 2 days at the Poly?

PS.- we get the golf cart- it is fun and gets you around quicker which is nice after a long day at the parks.
Hope that helps.
Michelle :)

Thanks Michelle, it helps a lot! Great idea about spending a few days at the Poly!

I can't answer your first question since my only experience was with FW cabins, but we did love it.

You can only drive to & from the campsite. In FW you have to walk, ride a bike, catch a bus, or use a golf cart. We weren't there enough to rent a gulf cart in my opinion--didn't think it was worth the money. The internal buses come every 15 mins or less. They gave us a choice of staying close to transportation or out in the boonies (which really means in the middle of the loop so you have a walk just to get to the bus stop). Depending on how close you stay to transporation would pretty help make up your mind about the gulf cart.

My wife stayed at FW when she was younger and loved it and now we stay at the resorts we have stayed at many of the resorts but she still talks about her camping trips to WDW and FW. So yes even though she has stayed at teh resorts she still loves FW and I would say go without the golf cart if your family is at all used to walking then a golf cart is not necessary that is what my DW tells me anyhow as they never needed a golf cart to get around FW.

spent 6 nights at the fort over the 4th. best part was sleeping in my own bed.also have stayed at the resorts some yrs. ago, i like the fort because i like being out doors and can't see leaving the rv home.cost was not much diffrence even with the price of gas.traveled about 3800 miles on vacation and grand kids enjoyed seeing the diffrent states.spent 2 weeks on the road and can't wait to go again.rest of the summer will be in the north east but feb. back to daytona.

I would highly recommend renting the golf cart. We bring ours every time. With so many activities (campfire, fireworks, light parade, kids activities, etc) going on at different times it just helps you get there that much quicker without having to wait for buses. We always notice how hot and grumpy the people at the bus stops look as we pass them by. We go back and forth sometimes and there still waiting there. You can read some of the other threads on bus experience in the Fort.
As far as giving it a try- GO FOR IT! Especially if you know your family already loves camping. I go for the experience and memories with my family. We stay all over WDW but most of the fun times my DS and DD bring up are when we go camping at the Fort. They just light up when I tell them we are going. You've been to Poly several times- try something new! I don't think you'll be disappointed! :sunny:

I hate camping! I went once in a tent, it rained, and I swore I'd never go again! We have a trailer at a campground in NH, but it's not camping, we have a micorwave and flat screen tv's in every room! Que our Cub Scout pack doing a Youth Group trip to Disney, and me doing all the planning. We took a large tent, and had a wonderful time. I would go back and camp here again anytime. It was a beautiful location ...I can't say enough about it!
