We are taking my grandmother on vacation with us and she is in a wheelchair due to a stroke she suffered in 2000. Has anyone stayed in a wheelchair accessable cabin at Ft. Wilderness and if so, how did it go?

Thanks!

Welcome to disABILITIES. :wave2:

I think Talking Hands (Lisa) has stayed in one.

They should be able to help you with questions if you don't get any answers here.

The last time we stayed in Fort Wilderness cabins there were 6 of us with 2 people in wheelchairs. Both were able to leave the wheelchairs, so they could be folded up and out of the way. If one must stay in the chair, I expect it would be tight. Once the murphy bed is pulled down, I don't see how one could manuver very well around with the w.c. The bathroom has a roll in shower with a shower seat. I believe the toilet is elevated as well, but don't remember exactly. There is ample room in the bathroom and the kitchen area is small but still accesable. It all depends how able your grandmother is. Can she transfer? The deck is ramped of course, and there is a lot of room on the deck with a picnic table in the center.

I found the cabins easy to move around. THere are really 2 levels of cabins, one have a roll in shower, the other tub with grab bars. I always use the bedroom so the problem of getting around the Murphy bed isn't an issue. My chair doesn't fold and we had enough room for what we needed.
