Future Floridians...any second thoughts?

Still planning on moving.

We both need a warm climate and Florida is still our primary choice. Like others have said, there's adverse weather just about any place that's affordable. You just need to be prepared and hurricanes are about the most predictable of all. Besides, I'm really tired of snow and ice!

We are loving living in FL. The summer was hot but had worse days when I lived in PA. At least in FL I have A/C and I don't have to worry about snow.

We are still moving. In fact, I confirmed our moving date for Wednesday Dec. 1 yesterday! I don't think anything can change my mind... DD and I have not lived with DH in almost 2 years and we are ready to be together again. December isn't hurricane season, and we actually know that we have to move to Virginia in May so we will be gone before it even starts. Not that hurricanes never go by VA, but let's hope hurricane season next year is not as bad as it was this year :sunny:

We've been down here for a few months now and we love it. Even after going through both hurricanes that affected the area, there's no way we'd leave. We had no damage to our home, but I did speak to my insurance company regarding homeowners insurance. He said that they weren't writing any policies until October, but that we shouldn't expect any increase in our rate or deductible here in central florida. He said that's why the hurricane deductible was put in place...just for this reason. Perhaps on the coast that would be a different story. The state will do everything that they can to keep the hurricane deductible between 2-5%.

And I think that the media has blown the whole hurricane story way out of proportion with respect to central florida. Yes, Charley was nasty and did some serious damage. However, here in central florida almost all the damage was caused by downed trees. We had a very rainy summer here and so with the saturated ground and high winds, trees were just waiting to come down. Frances was minor compared to Charley and Ivan didn't even touch us.

And yet, my family up north says that news of Florida's hurricane season is still all over the news. Three hurricanes haven't hit Florida for over 40 years and the chances of this happening again are very small statistically.

We love our new neighborhood, home and city and we're not leaving.

Oh yes the state will do what it can, in fact there may be a special legislative session for this very subject. However, looking at the Billions of dollars of damage, I imagine that policy rates will not only go up all over the state, but all over the country. The state wants to make it that you only pay one deductible during hurricane season no matter how many hit your area, that is why I think we MAY see a higher deductible.

Nope. I still want to live in Florida some day! I'll take an occasional hurricane over threats of tornadoes, ice storms, blizzards, hazardous snowy/icy roads, and just plain frigid temps in the winter!!!!:p
