My traveling party will still be a moving target when my reservation window opens. Will they ask for names and ages at reservation time - and if so, is it relatively pain-free to call and change later? What if it changes in the last week before vacation?

Yes, they will ask. You can change via chat or e-mail.
If you wait until the last week, those added will not be able to get a customized MB, or fast passes at 60 days ahead.

Just make the reservation online in your name, later send MS an email to modify the reservation names and to add your room request.

If I don't have everyone locked in I always just do the reservation in my name and later contact MS to add everyone else - either via phone if I happen to be calling about something else or an email.

I'm going to jump in with a question ....

Our names too are a moving target - If I book the room for D, L, M, S and order 4 magic bands for the 4 of us what happen if I changes the reservation to D, L, C, E? (C, E already have MBs)? Do the MBs stays assigned to M and S? Am I correct that Disney just automatically assigns the bands to the names listed under my MDE?

Thanks!

The people that are on the reservation at the time the Magic Bands are processed and sent out are the ones that will receive them. If you change after that time the "new" people may or may not have time to customize and have the MB's shipped otherwise they will get them at check-in.

The important thing is linking the passes to a person/magic band.

Tickets are important for FP's but to get MB's you don't have to have tickets assigned - just be on a room reservation.

My concern is that the MB's ordered for the names originally on the reservation would automatically be assigned to the new names on the reservation, but that will not happen. The original MB's stay in the original names, the new names can pickup bands at check-in or I can add the reservation to their existing MB's.

Magic Bands are linked to a specific individual's MDE account when they are produced. If you have "Bobby" on your room reservation and a Magic Band is delivered, that band belongs to Bobby. Even if Bobby drops off your reservation, the band still tied to Bobby's MDE account, along with any park tickets, FastPasses, dining reservations, etc. which were linked to his account.

To my knowledge, there is no way to take anything which was originally assigned to "Bobby" and move it to another individual.

If you add "Jimmy" to your resort reservation at the last minute, any MagicBands that he already owns should open the hotel room door. But if you're past the MB shipping date, it will likely be too late to order a new custom MB for that trip. Jimmy can still get a gray one upon arrival.

Can't Jimmy just pretend to be Bobby, as long as both require the same admission (adult vs. child)?

That would be dicey. Ages are part of the MDE profile. If Jimmy is listed as a 5 year old and 9 year old Bobby uses his MagicBand, it could raise some questions.

For adults, there are many checkpoints where photo ID may come into play. One of the big reasons for creating the MDE system was to keep guests from sharing theme park admission. Even if there's no intention to defraud here, to Disney it would appear that two guests are trying to share admission if the name on the band doesn't match photo ID. If they ever have problems entering a park and ID is checked, Disney will deny entry. They take the park tickets very seriously.

The worst case scenario here is that these guests who are added late will have gray MagicBands instead of custom. Not exactly the end of the world. Either finalize the guest list before the bands ship, live with the gray ones or spend $12+ for a custom MagicBand upon arrival.

What questions?

If either has been before, the finger print wont match nor will the photo.

if there are wueations as to who will go, just don't have full profiles for the people you're booking now. I have 8 people on my MDE who are nothing but names and ages. None of them have profiles other than that. So if I book for Amanda's profile but then Sylvia comes instead, there's no issue. Sylvia just uses Amanda's mb.

Now our extended group hasn't had tickets for awhile, but if we did, they would be new tickets. And if Sylvia took them over it wouldn't be an issue for that first use. And if I ran into the same thing again, I'd just create a Sylvia 2 profile if amanda might go instead. That means none of them can use their old MBs, but none of them really care about that.

So just don't use anyone's real profile if you aren't sure if they are coming.

If they have been to WDW prior and entered the parks, they will have finger prints/photo assigned to them already. If they are identical twins the photo may pass but not the prints.

Our annual passes the past couple of years do not have a picture attached, I don't think. We have the fingerprint attached.
