Funny thing happened at the castle...

Well yesterday we took my MIL to MK for the day and we had reservations for a surprise lunch at the castle. Well, Monday was my DH birthday so I decided to let them know when I checked in...thinking they would bring him a cupcake and maybe sing him happy birthday. Well, at the end of our meal the server came out and announced that it was DH's birthday and that he was going to offer him a challenge. He would be given questions, he could pass if he wanted but he needed to get 3 right. If he got 3 right, the server would pay for our lunch and the 3 tables closest to us. Talk about a little pressure. If he got 1 wrong, he would have to stand and we would all sing happy birthday to him. My DH was not happy at this time, he is not one who likes attention. And I was turning all shades of red, cause I know paybacks will not be good. If he declined the challege, he would still get sung to, so he had to take the challenge. So, the first question is....in counting 1-100....how many times do you use the number 9....let me tell ya the answer in not 10. So we all had to pay for our lunches and my DH was very embarrased. I think we will be staying home for my birthday...who knows what he will have in store for me.

90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98

OK, I am no math major but why isn't the answer 10? 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, 99... What's up here?

OOPS! AM I embarassed... I see why it's 11. "99" uses 9 twice... Told you, no math major here...

Well, the number 9 is part of 19 numbers between
1-100 (9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, 90, 91,
92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 and 99)...so that might
have been the answer.

Of course, if they were going for the trick answer,
it might be just .... once. Nine is only used once,
between 8 and 10.

And it's just possible that if you gave the first answer,
they'd say it was the 2nd -- and vice versa.

Anybody else run into this one?

Answer was 20...9, 19,29,39,49,59,69,79,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98, and then twice for 99.....

If he would of gotten that right I'm sure the ones to follow would have been tougher....we're talking around 250.00 that the server would of had to of payed out.

I think it would be 20. I didn't even think of it being used twice in 99 when I guessed 19.

When counting from 1-100 you use the number 9 only once.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 9 ,....100

Therefore, I say the correct answer is ONE. As far as I know the other example show a lot of numbers that are not the number 9.

As embarrased as you guys may have been, that sounds like a fun experience. I guess it would have been more fun had he gotten the questions right .

I believe the answer to the question is once. Only once do you say nine, the rest the nine is attached to something else like twenty-nine. It is one of those puzzles I use with my students often.

Funny, I had forgotten about 90, 91, 92 and so forth, but again, it probably is just 1. Depending on how exactly he asked it.

My DH would be dead from embarrassment right now if that had happened to him. But I love all the discussion the first question has provoked. Did they ever say what answer they were looking for?

It was very funny....but I know I will get paybacks. He did not give us the answer...which leaves me to believe there could be more then one answer...and no matter what we picked, it would of been wrong.
