Part of the Discovery Cove experience is swimming through an Aviary housing several of the most exotic birds you could ever hope to see in one setting.
Birds from all over the World. You actually can get out of the water and walk around this particular part and feed the birds with food provided. With staff on hand as nice as could be.

One of the variety of birds is the Magpie. This particular one is actually a foreign exotic type of Magpie but like all Magpies.......troublemaker.

Here we also find the timid ,keeps to himself, Tawny Frogmouth. A nocturnal bird but during the daytime so at peace and docile, that it doesn't even begin
to show you A HINT of life even if you pet it ,get near his beak and finally a meager attempt at blocking your finger by opening its mouth is made.

So here I am feeding the birds when I hear and look over and see the Magpie
making short loud shrieks at the Tawny Frogmouth RIGHT IN HIS FACE!!

At first all I could think was OH NO! The bird's Wild instincts have taken over.
this is about TO GET UGLY. A bird's fight and I'm right in the middle of it. Better duck and hope not to get scratched should a Battle Royal ensue.

Well I turn to get one of the staff's attention and one them says in a "well look who's at it again" manner, "WILSON!!!"

Then noticing no panic in the attendant's voice over what's happening I then realize The Magpie was MOCKING AND MAKING FUN OF The Tawny Frogmouth, just to be a Pain in the ***!!!!

"AAA!!" "AAAH!!" "AAA!!" Right in poor Virgil's face! Virgil being the name of the Tawny Frogmouth I came to learn.

The Magpie would then bang his beak furiously on the branch he and Virgil
were sitting on in hopes of knocking poor Virgil off or just to be a pain!!!!

Lucky for Wilson, Virgil's reflexes are Slow compared to his. I kid you not
Virgil was chomping back at him hard enough if he had caught him that would have been it. You could hear the sound of Virgil's beak snapping to a deadly extent.
Poor Virgil. Wilson was basically doing the old missed me,missed me routine,RIGHT NEXT TO HIM, mocking his slower reflexes even more.

I was then told though not to worry, Virgil finally did fight back once and gets his revenge at night when he's more alert.

So when you go ask about the Wilson and Virgil feud ,and maybe you just may witness some of it yourself.

Another funny moment ,as I was feeding one of the other birds ,a smaller parrot type with orange yellow feathers, who did not wish to be petted.

Perfectly alright to sit on your arm but he just wants to eat. So each time he bends his head down to eat from cup if you move your finger in to pet his head his beak comes right up to block, so I began to play with him, each time he bent down ,I would move to pet him, causing him to bring his head right back up, up,down,up,down,up,down,up,down,up,down.....finally he stops.
Pauses his head ,tilts it to the side and looks right at me as if to say
"Do we have an understanding here or do we not?" "YOU STAND STILL AND
I FEED" "NO PETTING" so I relented and let him finish.

I hope you have some fun experiences yourselves in feeding the birds especially if you love animals.

On a side note the CUTEST animal you could hope to meet.In addition to the birds they also have a couple of Muntjacs. Which are minature and appear to be baby deer. So delicate if you pet her anywhere else besides behind the ear
or underneath chin, she begins to cry,but its THE CUTEST SOUND you'll ever hear. She's just terribly nervous ,you can even feel her shake when you pet her properly, a poor bundle of nerves. So heartwarming though you wish you could have/make a pet of it.

Please share any of your stories of your feeding the bird's experience, I love it each time I go. Been there four times now ever since it opened.looking forward to my fifth.

Those storys are wonderful.Thank you very much for sharing them. We´ll be at DC at the end of April and I´ll make sure to spend some time at the Aviary.I love birds and your experiences even made me more determind to go.

Greetings from Germany
Conny :thumbsup2 :)

We are going to Discovery cove in August and the one part I will not be doing is the aviary as I am scared of birds flying at me or even landing on me, I have this total phobia about this and I am sure I am going to miss out on all lot of the fun, not being able to do this section. I loved reading your story it sounded like you had a great time.

My pleasure Conny, hope you have a great time and end up with some stories
of your own!

wendy-uk - AWWW. Can't say I don't understand though. There is that latent
fear that can sit in the back of your mind if you let it. What if all of a sudden these birds start pecking at me? That's what went through my mind when the two birds I described started their interaction. Here we go ,now there all gonna lose it, run for cover!!

However I can assure you you'll still have a wonderful time without visiting the Aviary. It is a great place all around.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Wilson on my trip through the aviary. Wilson became very attached to me and I have some great pictures of him sitting on my head, arm and just about any place else he could find to perch. For some reason he was really attracted to me and when it came time to go they had to remove him from me. The whole time I was being entertained by Wilson some crane type bird was pecking (gently) at my dripping bathing suit and again the pictures caught by the wandering photographers were great so great that my friend and I ended up dishing out a pile of cash before we left that day for the pictures they had taken of us.

Oh, I can't wait for this - we'll be at Discovery Cove a week from Thursday!!! I can't wait until tomorrow so my daughter can read about this!!

Per paddisneylover's post allow me to verify that Wilson is indeed a very friendly and nice bird to feed. I fed him as well. What his problem is with Virgil
the Tawny Frogmouth ? Who knows? But please don't worry about Wilson personally. He is lovable.

DVCLiz- Have a Great Time!!!!
