It's because the Howell's were out-of-touch rich people who would feel that they couldn't live without a ton of stuff for even a short cruise. That's the joke of their characters. Ginger as well is a pampered starlett who thinks she needs more stuff than she would. Really none of the passengers have a lot of sense.

Yup. Sometimes people criticize the show for that, but it is in fact a farce - it is not intended to hold up to any kind of logical scrutiny. The characters are all eccentric - unrealistically so - which is what makes their group dynamic funny. It's all an excuse for gags - but it also plays by the rules of it's own universe, as ridiculous as they may be.

It's common practice to poke fun at the Professor, with full knowledge that the purpose of the show is to keep the cast on the island. But thank you for explaining sitcoms for me!

Oh, I wasn't esxplaining it to you - clearly you get it. I was expounding on the nature of a farce for those who often use such "plot holes" to be derisive toward the program. It's very common. Not all sitcoms are farces of course - but the best ones are!
