When my oldest daughter turned 16 she couldn't wait to have a big Sweet Sixteen birthday party. We rented the local rec building and she invited 30/40 friends. We had subs, pizzas, music, dancing, games, etc. There were tons of decorations, balloons, and several posters with pictures of her from an infant to age 16. With my oldest daughter, it was always "the more the merrier". She always enjoyed, and still does, any kind of celebration or party.

Youngest daughter is turning 16 next week and she doesn't want a big birthday party. At first, she said she did, but when it came time to send out invitations she changed her mind. We talked and she said she just doesn't like big parties or big groups of people. I should have known this because she rarely goes to parties that she's invited to, and some that she's gone to I've had to go get her early. I assured her that it was fine and we were okay with her not wanting a big party. Truthfully, I was looking forward to throwing a big party for her, but I totally respect her feelings. It's just funny that two sisters can be so different!

On daughter's birthday, instead of a big party, we'll take her out to a restaurant of her choosing, then come home for cake and ice cream. At home she'll have gifts, a balloon bouquet and husband will get her roses, (a tradition he started years ago with our oldest daughter.)

So see, not every teenage girl is a candidate for that train-wreck of a show on MTV, My Sweet Sixteen Party, or whatever it's called! :rotfl2:

It's weird - isnt it?

I have a 15 y/o and 11 y/o - both boys. They couldnt be more different. It's odd - one is a natural athlete, just comes so easy to him. The other struggles to catch a ball. One is so artisitic, the other couldnt care less about a box of crayons, let alone - using them. One can spell & read like no one's business - the other dreads even writing his name, and asks me to read subtitles on TV shows cuz he 'doesnt feel like reading it'. One is a peach - so sweet and sensitive, the other takes after his mother (ahem!) rude, self absorbed and arrogant!

It's crazy - same egg / same 'juice' / same house = different kids. :confused3

I think cuz Im an only child, this fascinates me.

My brother and I are different. He is very passive when it comes to relationships (his wives rule the roost) and I am well, not. :teeth:

That's what they don't tell you about kids...they're all different. My only child husband cannot get over the fact that our four boys are not one in the same...one likes hotdogs...one like hamburgers...one likes cheeseburgers and the other just wants something to drink! It's like this with every bit of their personalitites! Enjoy them, all! But, sometimes you do stare at them and wonder what planet they're from! :confused3

Me and my brother are complete opposites. For one, he has blonde curly hair (which is now almost brown), blue eyes, and olive skin. He is thin as a rail and tall. I have red hair (which is now strawberry blonde) straight hair, blue eyes, and very fair skin. I am short and not thin. He is a social butterfly, I'm not. He loves history, I can't stand it. I like math, he hates it. He hates spending a night home alone. I love to spend a night alone with a good book. I am a computer nerd, he can just about grasp the concept of a keyboard. I am very handy around the house, he is a bull in a china shop. :rotfl: He looks and acts just like my mom's family. I look and act just like my dad's family. We couldn't be more opposite. Sometimes I really wonder how we are related.

OP: I was just like your younger daughter. While most of my friends were having these huge sweet sixteen parties, I didn't want one. I stayed home with my family that day. Big parties just aren't my thing. Now for my 18th, I brought a bunch of friends with me to Six Flags to ride roller coasters. I figured that was more fun. ;) :teeth:

Good post! Hope your 2nd daughter has a lovely birthday.

As a mom of twins, I know firsthand how different they can be.

My oldest daughter doesn't have a shy bone in her body and she tells it like it is. She eats meat because, "Well, God made it so tasty, I just have to eat it!"

My youngest daughter is extremely sensitive and tends to keep her thoughts to herself. She is a vegetarian because she wouldn't dream of eating anything, "that was once alive or has a family."

My twin and I are exact opposites. I'm 2 inches taller. She has grey eyes, mine a bright blue. I wear glasses, she doesn't. I'm left handed. She's right. I like making things. I scrapbook and carve carousel animals. She can draw a stick figure. I'm very calm about things. She gets really worked up over small things.
We're fraternal and like night and day.

My teen nieces are identical twins. One is really outgoing. She's head cheerleader, twirls baton, plays flute, into drama, gets her hair lightened, tans, has boys swarming around her, etc. Her twin stays home. She studies a lot. She's shy and not into any activities.

I once had a therapist tell me that siblings do not grow up in the same family....

You grow up in a family that includes that sibling, and they grow up in a family that includes YOU.

She made me understand a lot about myself and why I am the complete opposite of my sister. She actually called me the Anti-Michelle because I grew up watching her and purposely being the opposite of everything she stood for.

I sometimes wonder what would I have been if she never existed??? :confused3

My sister and I are as different as night and day. Drives my parents nuts.
