When my grandfather died, I did a reading. It was terribly hard. My voice began to crack half way through and it tool a minute for me to regain my composure but I did fine.

However, when my grandmother ( his wife) died, I knew there was no way that I could do the reading. She was the anchor in my life when I was a child and teenager. At the funeral, my mom wrote the eulogy and the priest read it-ugh. If I had known she was going to do it, I would have taken a tranquilizer and muddled through. My mom was jealous of my grandmother and my love for her. The eulogy made a joke of my dear Mama.
To an extent I have gotten over it but I don't think that I will ever get over it completely.

I spoke at my mother's funeral and was fine.

I might not have done it - but my brother decided that he was going to speak. That *&^$^%* rat did not bother to come see my mother the last year and a half of her life (while she was fighting breast cancer) so I was NOT going to let him be the "official family spokesperson".

My brother has a bazillion dollars and spends his time jetting all over the world - but he couldn't be bothered to spend a day with his dying mother. He broke her heart.

I spoke at my mum's funeral and managed to keep it together. I loved being able to verbalize what she meant to not only me, but her family and friends.

My favorite part was being able to relate a story that included me, a yacht, an Elvis impersonator and some, ummm, prostitutes...... (all very innocent of course and cleaned up for the audience.) :goodvibes
