my brownies have been working on their try-it's now for a few months and they all wanted to do the food safety/food prep try its. We had tried to do the 'meals in minutes' here in town, but as we were arranging it with the owner, we found out that a lot of the meals are already prepared by her and just ready to come and pick them up- which wasn't going to work for us.

We got a great idea to do our own 'meals in minutes' type of thing at a local church kitchen. Meals in minutes is a type of activity where people show up, there are certain meals that they make, they pay money for each meal, then they take it home and put it in their fridge or freezer to use on a busy night when they don't have time to cook. When a person shows up at meals in minutes, all of the food is already preped (veggies are chopped as they should be, all of the ingred. are out and ready to be put together, they have the meats preped- ready for the marinades and things like that) It's super easy and takes about 10-15 minutes to put 1 meal together.

A few of us got together this weekend and brainstormed about the types of food we should do for our troop...we're doing 'friendship soup' (recipe can be found all over the web) ours uses all dried ingred. that go into a canning jar/saved sauce jars/any glass jar with a good seal...we're using yellow and green peas, dried beans, onion flakes, seasonings, beef boullion, abc noodles...then layer in the jars nicely. All they need to do is go home and put it into a few cups (usually around 6) of hot water and cook for an hour. They can choose to add meat, or have it be meat free. I thought each girl could make 4 jars. They could keep 2 for their family and give 2 away (hence the name 'friendship soup')...so this probably isn't a new idea, but I've seen other girl scout leaders and parents on here in the past, looking for fun activities to do with their girls...this should be a good one!

That sounds like a lot of fun.:goodvibesBut don't forget that the girls should be doing a lot of the planning and decision making. Maybe you could put together a few different recipes and let them vote on which one they would like to prepare.

I think this is a great idea. For Brownies the leaders usually plan the activitie. I Juniors the girls begin planning so I think the OP is fine. I may give this a try with my 6th graders who love cooking and anything having to do with cooking... :yay:

Thanks for sharing~ I love to see what other GS troops do. My Brownie troop earned the Make It Eat It Try It by going to a cooking school and they made several things that came out really well and it was fun. I loved your activity and will keep something in mind like that for Juniors~

Yeah, we have brownies and three daisies in my troop. As leaders, we try to encourage them to help with planning as much as they can- but it's hard to get them to do much of it when they range from K-2nd grade. We did give them a paper to vote (they wrote a number on the paper) on what soup we were going to make though...it was between 4 soups 'pea soup, chili bean soup, veg. alphabet or beefy veg. and barley' they chose veg. alphabet. Which truely isn't really a veg only soup, because it has beef boullion in it.

There's one mom who found out about us needing jars with sealable lids and she said she's been saving pasta sauce jars with screw tops for the past 6 months just in case- so she's bringing all of her jars. Any pasta sauce jars are great- Ragu, Prego any thing with a screw on lid...
