Full time status/health ins.

Hi there everyone. I'm a mom looking into some more specific info, as I'm encouraging my son to apply for the CP. He's in his second year as a hospitality/resort management major and he's interested in applying for the Jan 2010 CP. I'm wondering how/if he can maintain full time student status in order to stay on our health insurance policy, or if there is an alternative for health insurance offered through the program while he is not a full time student (if that's actually the case while he's doing the program). Any information you guys can offer, (or any moms/dads out there with this experience behind them) is greatly appreciated!

Has he talked to anyone at the school? Mine is giving me full-time student status, and I'm listed as doing an internship for no credit. I would suggest talking to someone in the office responsible for internships (here it's Career Services). According to the woman I talked to there, Disney sends them a list of everyone who is doing the program, and then they go in and assign those students full-time status. I don't know how this works at other schools, but that's my experience. And then I just called the insurance guy to make sure that I would still be covered, and to let them know that I would be out of the state for the semester.

My daughter did the program last year.

In my research I found very few schools give full time credits for the program - although its certainly worth checking out.

On the other hand we paid a relatively reasonable amount for a basic policy for her through Assurant - it was a short term policy and worked out fine.

Actually doing that would have been cheaper than paying the school for the credits especially since its unlikely all those CP credits wouldn't fit into a degree program.

thank you both for the information you provided. he could talk to the school and see if full time credit would be given, however he intends to transfer out of the current school once he has his associates and do the program for Jan 2010, starting the school he's transferring into in Fall 2010. Would this cause any problems with getting into the CP?

Unfortunately there is no health insurance offered.

My school is one of the few that gave 12 credits for the internship. However, for my degree I must complete 9, and I'm still considered full time, studying abroad. I took an extra class in my school's night program for extra credits (online).

Would your son's school let him take online classes if they are offered? If not, could he just pick up online classes with a different school and transfer them while going a leave of absence?

He will be associated to whichever school he was at when he applied. If he applies while finishing up his AA then that's the school that would need to recognize him, not the new school he's transferring to after the program.

My experience says that if he applies to school B for spring, but then goes on the CP for the spring program then he'll have to reapply to school B for Fall. I do not know of any schools that will recognize a student before they take classes from the institution.

Since he would be in limbo between two schools it may be easier to get a basic policy for that period.

my college does not give any credit for this experience however my health insurgence only requires the "child" to be full time at least 6 months out of the year. i have to take a leave of absence from my college and promise to come back in the spring... check with your insurance, perhaps you have to do something similar...

As said above, my insurance is the same, except since I was in school this year, I'm covered for the year, and then when it comes time to renew in December, I will be going back to school so no worries. Since I did some school in 2009, I'm covered thru 2009, and since I'm returning to school in 2010, there are no worries when we renew the insurance. Also, my school guidance office offered to write a letter to the company saying that they are allowing me to do this internship, explain it is with Disney, you were a full-time/part-time student but want to take this opportunity and then say they will be welcoming said student back when they are done, if they decide to return to that school. I would call the insurance company about being covered since you were in school this past year and in 2009, will you be covered til December, that's what worked for us. hope it is kind of clear above?? this insurance thing is a problem for most CPs for some reason!!!

My career services advisor said that I would retain my full-time student status, even if I wouldn't be getting internship credits for it. The best thing for your son to do, is to just go talk to his advisors.

My sister is keeping her full time status at Disney by taking a leave of absence at her school and she is on paper going to Onondaga Community College for the semester. Onondaga will give you the full 12 credits necessary for full time status for the Disney college program. She take 2 of Disneys classes one counts for 3 credits and the other counts for 9 (I think that class counts as class plus internship experience). It's worth checking into. Even though she is paying Onondaga for the credits it's worth it because she won't be a smester behind when returning to school next year.

He could always continue his degree online, which is what I'm doing. If I took a semester off I'd lose financial aid permanently, which I can't afford. My college offers distance learning classes, which means you're still considered a student, but you're taking online courses. He could probably talk to a counselor and find out which of his courses he would be able to get credit for in that way.
