In NJ all our gas is FULL SERVE(one of the perks) Now by full serve I am talking just pumping gas - not cleaning the windows and checking oil. (although they will do that if you ask)
So do you tip when you go full serve? We were having the discussion with friends and it is such an always or never thing- but we are the of the sometimes variety. Depends on the attitude I guess.

I have never tipped a gas station attendant. They pump gas, I pay them for the gas. I don't understand this new trend for tipping people (other than wait staff) for doing their job in an efficient and pleasant manner. That's what their supposed to do.

I don't remember the last time I was at a full serve gas station. But no, I have never tipped. Gas is expensive enough as it is.

Yes, I do. Usually $2. It isn't much.

There is a guy in Springfield Ma that would always check fluids/ engine every time. I tipped him ~15%.

The way my "always" friends described it was what is an extra $- no big deal. (and I was thinking oh have I told you about the budget board on the dis)

No, never. I don't know anyone who does, except for people who are here from out of state and think you're supposed to. ;)

ETA: I always pay with a debit card, and much of the time have no cash on me or just 20s.
If it was meant to be a tipped position there would be an option to put in a tip when they put the DC or CC through.

We have one full-service station in our town that I tend to use in the winter. I'm old enough to remember when all stations were full-service--we didn't tip then and so I never thought about tipping now.

Lived in NJ for 28 years and never heard of tipping for full service gas!

:rotfl2: We are the transplant crowd now that I think of it. The ones that say NEVER are the lifers of NJ the ones that do tip were the ones that moved here from NY.:rotfl2:

How I miss someone pumping my gas! I have never tipped in NJ for them to pump my gas.

:thumbsup2 Also, in most areas of the country, the few remaining full service stations charge a premium for their gas, so the cost of the extra service is included in the price.

Full serve is RARE around here. All stations must do it for the handicapped, but the ones who just do it as a matter of service...well, they are few and far between.

Back when they DID do it, I never tipped. I still don't...but it isn't often that I go to the one place around that does it.

And there is NO WAY I would tip if they required me to purchase the service, as they do in NJ.

Nope. They get paid to pump gas, and in NJ there's no option to go elsewhere and pump your own.

OT, but tipping is becoming a bit out of control. If we get service at a restaurant, I tip well - Between 20-25%.

A couple weeks ago, we were staying at a Westin Hotel. A bellhop helped with our 1 bag to the front desk - Had to tip him. Another bellhop brought our bag up to our room - Had to tip him. Had to valet park the car - Had to tip him. They wouldn't let us do anything. When your smallest bill is a $5, it gets pricey.

Lifer from NJ and no, I've never tipped them.

I've never been to a full service station. I don't know of one within driving distance in my area.

It's mandatory in NJ:confused3 How much does this push the price of the fuel up?

Once DH and I paid attention and 6 different people handled our bags(and let us know it) by the time we got to our room at Disney.:rotfl2: We were laughing trying to figure out who should get more the guy that lifted the bags out of the car or the guy that wheeled them into the hotel - oh and don't forget the 2 car guys. One guy gets the keys and the other guy gives you the ticket!:rotfl2:
I guess the "service" was what was making people tip? But then why not tip the Dentist? Or the bagger at the grocery store. Yeah I guess where does it end. Maybe our sometimes is changing to a never.

We do not tip at full service gas stations. I figure the additional 40 to 50 cents per gallon more than covers the extra service.

Pretty soon I 'll have to start tipping my dog Bridgette for just going to the mailbox and bringing in our newspaper. Oh wait, we do tip her....in cookies.

Tipping has gotten out of control IMO.

No!

Here, full service gas is priced 10-15 cents/gallon higher than self-serve. So, if we choose full serve, we pay a premium. I like to think it is because they pay their attendants more, at least I hope so.
