Hi. I have learnt (thanks) that only sometimes at TS restaurants they will allow you to sub a side salad or soup for dessert.
My wife and mother in law are very health conscious eaters and will not be eating desserts every night. Also what if you are diabetic?
Are there always healthier options such as fruit plate available?

Thanks

If you are diabetic there is always a no-sugar-added dessert.

If you really don't want dessert with every meal then just don't get the dining plan and you will have a lot more flexibility.

I can't think of any TS restaurant that has a fruit plate. Some of the signatures have a cheese plate for two to share, but not fruit.

I don't think you need to share the cheese plate, I think it can be dessert for one, I had it last time I was at Cali Grill. Its not really a healthier choice though.

Again, unless you are on a free dining offer, if you don't think you will want dessert, you will be much better off just not getting the DDP.

Most places have a no sugar added sorbet as their health-friendly dessert.

Dining plans do not provide a lot of flexibility.

I have read that you can request fruit for dessert on the ddp. Most of the restaurants have cut fruit for the kiddos in some form so I assume they'd give a bigger portion to the adults. This is actually a menu dessert item at Sci Fi Dine in too. I was planning to bring a little container with me for the fruit and take it for later as a snack - I love fruit and would get the milk shake as my drink, that is plenty of sugar for one meal.

My husband has a dairy allergy and often requests fruit for dessert. It's usually the same fruit cup that's given to the children in the same portion. The signatures restaurants, Yachtsman and California Grill, have given him nicer fruit.

You can always ask. You may not be able to make the sub.

I know that DIsney is very accomodating in regards to helping peole with dietary concerns, so they will often make exceptions if someone has a food allergy or cannot have sugar. Please, I know you did nto say you planned on doing this, but do not tell your server that is the reason for your substitution. Disney is one of the only vacation destinations that is so safe for all kinds of sensitivities, and the last thing we want is to see them begin to tighten their accomodations.

Years ago, if you asked for a special cleaning for your room due to serious compromised health Disney did this. Free of charge. Well, folks who wanted the room cleaned to that level just lied. I am not sure that courtesy is available any longer, and that makes me worry about the dietary considerations.

Chefs de France made me a gorgeous bowl of fresh berries because they did not have a diabetic friendly dessert on the menu.

Not everywhere had a no-sugar dessert available but many did and some of them were excellent. Only 2 were bad.

If you do not want dessert, the ddp is not a great value

As to sugar free desserts :rolleyes2, its usually NOT low carb and not suitable. For a diabetic counting carbs, but that is another soapbox for another day

I just read a link on this site listing changes that allow you to choose other items (salad, soup, fruit) instead of dessert. Am I missing something?

The issue is that not every Table Service offers these options. It is, well, optional for a Table Service to have these options. Many don't.

For TS, this is not written anywhere in the brochure. Some restaurants will give you something instead of your dessert, but it at their discretion. They may give you a small salad, cup of soup, veggie, or some fruit. It will not be something that is on the menu. They may offer you nothing. It never hurts to ask, but they don't have to make the exchange.

For QS, you can trade your dessert/drink for anything with the snack logo next to it. In 2017, the dessert goes away, so you'll only have the drink portion to trade.

In the Dining Plan brochure on the TS page it says:
For Lunch/Dinner • Entrée • Dessert • Non-Alcoholic Beverage
And below that:
Ask your server about potential substitutions, but substitutions not guaranteed.

So, while you can ask at a TS restaurant, there is no guarantee and for those that will allow a substitute it will be something of the restaurant's choosing. As sharonabe said, the most common reports have been a small side salad, a cup of soup or a veggie side dish.

I have been able to substitute a few desserts, Apps and part of meals because of food allergies. But there sometimes is not a lot of things to choose from.
