Frozen dog water

Why not do what they suggest for fish ponds and put a couple of ping-pong balls in the dish? That may only work if the water is deep, but I used it on our bird bath and it never froze over. ( On the other hand maybe there is a risk of the dogs eating/choking on the pin pong balls, so maybe a larger light weight ball would be better)

Why is the water outside? Does your dog sleep in a dog house or some other kind of shelter?

I wonder if a soccer ball would work, Thanks for the idea:goodvibes

They make specific heaters for that sort of thing. Horses have them too.

Not all dog breeds need to be kept within a home when it gets cold. I hope everyone with a malamute lives in the north and lets their dog out to play for most of the day. But even if they don't, I wouldn't go around making assumptions about the way random people on the internet should treat their pets.

Add me to those who suggest that neither the water, nor the dog, will freeze if they are brought inside.

Not knowing where you're located, I can't recommend a specific store, but if you have a farm supply type store nearby, they carry electric heated buckets that are fairly reasonably priced,or you can order one off an internet site. We use five of them in our kennel, and it only raises our electric bill a little (DH actually built little insulated boxes for them to sit in.) PLEASE don't be one of "those people" (of which we have quite a few up here, unfortunately), who think it's ok to give their dog fresh water once or maybe twice a day, and too bad if it freezes:confused:. If your dog is already trying to stay warm in freezing conditions, drinking ice cold water, even if it's not frozen, is not going to help him maintain his body condition. An electric bucket will keep the water much more temperate, which means he'll drink more and stay healthier!

Here's a link to what they look like:

Add me as well.

My friend just told me he found a cat outside his house that apparently froze to death during the night. Pets should be INSIDE the house at night.

I forgot to add, make SURE that if your dog is a "chewer", you either make the cord inaccessible to him or put something over it so that he can't get at it. We have the large buckets which have like a wire spiraling around the cord, which turns off our older dogs, but, last winter when we had two puppies, my DH had to cut like conduit piping and tape it over the cord so they'd leave it alone.

I may not know you...but I love you. :lovestruc

I, too, would bring them both inside.

Thank you very much. ;)

I stand by my opinion that if it's cold enough for water to freeze, then it's cold enough for a warm-blooded animal to freeze.

I'll stand by that opinion with you.

I'd bring it AND the dog inside

This was my first thought, too.

I don't care if it is making assumptions about how people treat their pets, if it's cold enough to freeze a bowl of water, it's cold enough to at least be uncomfortable if not dangerous to a warm blooded animal. Please bring your dog inside at night!

I guess I will bring in my cows and horse as well. They don't have nearly as much fur as my dog. It should be intersting tonight. :lmao::lmao:
