This looks important for our community, so I wanted to pass it along.

The travel blog, View From The Wing is passing a report indicating Frontier Airlines has initiated some restrictions for those customers booking via online travel agencies.

Scott Mayerowitz covers the latest salvo in the war between travel providers and online travel agencies in this Associated Press story: Frontier Airlines won’t offer you seat assignments until check-in, will give you only half the frequent flyer miles, and will charge you higher ancillary fees, if you book your ticket through Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and similar websites.

Editorial: I think this is a good thing. Being a low cost carrier with great service, Frontier hasn't attempted to gouge their customers, in my observation. The online booking agencies do extract a commission for the same price (or higher) we can find on the airline's website. If we can reduce this ancillary cost, it can either be passed to the customer or help strengthen the financial stability of our favorite carrier.

Since the online agencies crippled the mom & pop travel agents back in the 2000s, it seems that "what comes around, goes around". If this was to effect personal travel agents, I would be less than happy. Since this is targeted at websites that require the same amount of work on our part to deliver the product as searching the airline's website, I don't see much value in them, personally. The only function would be to quickly search all airlines at one time, but that capability is better services with third party applications, such as the ITA Matrix from Google (http://matrix.itasoftware.com/).
