So we live in a rural area and we are considering getting high speed internet through our phone company, frontier. Anyone have this? thoughts? I have been reading reviews since setting up the appt for them to come out and they aren't to good. They come next week but I am now thinking of canceling due to the reviews. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking of calling verizon and see what they could do for us but I am sure it's real pricey. Dunno....

Maybe an Ipad with data plan then I was told I could stream that to the regular computer for the kids homework, kindle, ipods.

I really need to educate myself on all of this tech stuff!

Thanks disers!

I have it, due to being in a rural area and Frontier being the only way I can get internet. If I had a choice, I would drop them like a hot potato! Their customer service is really inconsistent, billing is inconsistent and takes forever to fix (think 1/2 hour wait time every time you call), and internet is slow. Other than that, they will do for now.

We have DSL through frontier and have had no problems with it at all. I have not had to call customer service very often, but when I have, they are helpful and I don't really remember any long wait times.

Customer service is awful. It took 3 months to just install a phone and another 4 months for them to bury the cable. But they are the only thing available here. We can't get their internet or tv services.

We have DSL thru Frontier also and don't have any complaints but then again I don't really have anything to compare it to. Speed seems just fine to me and I am pretty impatient. Never had to call for service. The only time we've had trouble is when someone is digging and cuts a fiber optic line and internet and cell phone service will be down. Seems to have happened several times in the past year but not sure its their fault and usually gets resolved within an hour or 2. Besides that no complaints I guess.

Does it work wifi on kindle, laptops, ipods, or ipad?

The service guy said yes. I dunno why I am having a hard time believing it... Maybe it's because I have not had anything but dial up.

If it's faster than dial up it's a plus! If not, I feel I will be paying extra money for nothing.

My mom and dad have this. It is the only option where they live and it has been a nightmare.

Wireless works and it is faster than dial up.

Just got Frontier internet in our area. Had it about a week and love it, dropped hughes net for it. Frontier is faster than hughes, no download allowence, better price. Dh's aunt has had it for years and been happy. I know in all my calls to set up service, get pricing info etc never had wait on hold. We got a wireless modem/router all in one with the deal that started june 1st for our area. Our speed is 4.1. I have been online with it using my ipad, phone, desktop.

Frontier is our only option in our area but I would drop them in a second and pay more for Verizon if I could!! The service is terrible and inconsistent in my area. Maybe your area will be better but if I had a choice....run like the wind :)

I can't speak for Frontier, but we live in a rural area (very rural) and had a lot of trouble finding something satisfactory (including satellite - couldn't get DSL though). We got the Verizon Mi-Fi and have been very satisfied for the most part. Our plan is $50 for 5gb a month. Since it focuses as a hotspot, we can operate the laptop, Thrive tablet, and Kindle Fire (up to 5 devices).

I also have Frontier DSL and am NOT a fan at all. We also have no other choice and I have BEGGED Verizon to come a few miles up my road (to no avail). Forget watching any online streaming movies like Netflix and we have slower than dial up service anytime it rains or snows for some reason. One time we needed out DSL modem replaced and they said they would send a service person out at some point. After three days I called to complain only to find out they had just dropped the new modem on my outdoor front porch chair 2 days prior with no note or even a knock at the door.

We just bundled our Dish Network into our Frontier plan and for the first time I have VOD movies on my bill that no one ever ordered (we don't have the bandwidth to order movies so no one would even bother).

It could be that your mileage may vary depending on your service area. I know that from what I can see at least 3 houses on our road are hooked to one DSL post which makes it so that on Saturday mornings there is not even any point to getting on at all because it is so clogged up.

We also live in a rural area. Cable will not come out here, and At&t is not available. Satellite internet is too expensive. We signed up with verizon, but it was sold to frontier. So that is how we ended up with frontier.

We previously had netzero dial up. It is a huge improvement over dial up. We have the least expensive service for frontier. $19.99/mo. Initially, we had no probelms at all. It would be a little slow during peak periods, but that was not surprising. Overall we were very pleased.

A couple months ago service went out. I called and the message said if you are in Wisconsin (we are), that there was a service issue and to reboot the modem and it would be fine. I tried several times and could not get it to work. I called and spoke to a few different reps who tried to tell me my router must have all of a sudden went out. What a coincidence. But they would be happy to sell me a new one. I finally ended up speaking to a supervisor, who changed the way my internet was configured...routed bridge instead of something or other and said it was fixed.

It was never the same after that outage and it is still not the same. It takes forever to get a connection now, when I first sit down to the computer. I even changed it so my computer does not go to sleep now, and it still takes several tries and a few minutes to connect and just open facebook or disboards.

Plus, now they went ahead and changed their whole email system over to yahoo mail. I don't like the change. I am officially unhappy with frontier, and I would change if I could.

I have had Frontier since 2005, and if I had any other option, I would be on it. Customer service is horrible, and I agree plan to spend at least half an hour on the phone and go through 15 min of pressing buttons to get to a real person. I haven't had good luck with the techs either. We have dead trees on our property that the phone line runs though (litteraly...the bark has grown around the line in several spots). I have been trying to get them to come move the line so we could cut them down since we moved here and got them. No go. They go back and forth between being snarky saying its not my problem to "I'll put in a work order" that never goes anywhere. Errrrrrr

OP- I think this really seems to depend on where you live.

We have had Frontier for years and have never really had any issues. As for those saying it's too slow, the only way we watch TV is through Netflix on our bluray or on the computers. (We got rid of Dish Network about three years ago) We have 4 laptops, two ipod touches, a wii, and a BluRay player that we stream netflix through. Our wireless router works well with all of these devices throughout our entire house and outside. Sometimes the wireless goes out (you can tell by how many lights are lit up on the router), clicking it off and on again it's working again in about ten seconds.

(I'm not trying to imply that the other posters are wrong, just that the service must vary by location.)
