From Whoville to Disneyland - Velkommen to Solvang! update p. 7

Me too ! Me too ! I was already onboard but didn't mention that I love Food Network. Alton Brown lives here in Marietta, I ran into him one day in Publix, kept going up and down aisles I didn't need anything on just to pass by him. I was too shy to speak though.

I told DH that when we're in LA at Christmas this year (it's his hometown) we HAVE to go to Pinks !

I just love to watch Alton! I always thought it looked like he was in Kroger's on the show and some of the items in Good Eats looked like Kroger's store brand canned goods. I would have probably done just what you did! :rotfl:

I am excited to see your DLR portion of the report, but I loved the Pinks pictures. I'm trying to fit that into a trip sometime.

By the way, Tommy's is AWESOME. I have eaten there.

Glad to see a new face! Did you go to the original Tommy's or are all of them the same that have branched out? We plan on going there next trip!

These look sooooo good and I'm not even a huge hot dog fan. I definitely have to keep Pink's on the list for the next time we go out to California. ::yes::

I promise it will make a hog dog lover out of anybody! Just plan on an early lunch before 11:30 to avoid a long line.

I'm hoping to update tomorrow--thanks for everybody's patience!

I'm really not sure where the Tommy's was that I went to. I was not driving. I'm assuming it was not the original.

Wow! That's quite the hotdog!

Hollywood, here we come!

So, we travel on down La Brea, going hopefully in the right direction, with very full bellies and a very excited whogirl. On the way, I look to my left and what do I see?

IMG_4256.jpg

We love this show! DH was so excited, he was ready to jump out and get a tattoo (can't--blood thinner. Oh, well.). This, of course, made my straight laced daughter lose her little mind; she thought we were really stopping for tattoos! You know, for a tree hugging, tie dye loving little thing, she sure is conservative at times.

We found Hollywood Blvd. with no trouble at all and parked at the Hollywood and Highland Center, which was only down a few blocks and then on the left. Yes, we went past the turn and had to circle the block; I do not count that as a u-turn. ;)

I remembered reading on here that most of the characters expect to be paid to have their pictures made with you, so I had forewarned Olivia of that fact. I did however take some sneak shots just so you could see what we saw (and how bad some of the costumes were :rotfl:).

IMG_4258.jpg

Hey, Scooby!

IMG_4259.jpg

Ariel, is that you??

IMG_4260.jpg

Evidently, this is Capt. Jack's new meet and greet.

IMG_4266.jpg

Oh, Mickey, what have they done to you??

So we stroll on up the street in search of our main man Mickey's star. We know from looking at the map that is near Michael Jackson's, so who knows if we'll even be able to get close to it.

On the way, whogirl finds one of her favorite singers.
IMG_4265.jpg

Amy Grant's star. Sorry for the glare.

Next, we come to Mann's Chinese Theatre. Boy, was it packed here! Nothing like a few hundred people all looking down as they walk around!

And look who we find!

Ooooh...I'm such an Alton Brown fan. :lovestruc Lucky you to actually see him in person!

And right ahead was Michael Jackson's star. There were still momentos scattered about, but not nearly as bad as I had feared. One of those weird and sad moments. As a former CPS worker, well, you can imagine.

IMG_4277.jpg

Just a ways up was the new Madame Tousaud's museum, which was very intriguing. But at $50 for all three of us, it was decided that money could be used elsewhere. Maybe next time if whogirl is not afraid.

This was a great wax figure of President Obama. It will be interesting to see the difference with how he looks in the Hall of Presidents in December. I had heard that one is not a very good likeness.

And we found a princess!

The other thing I had really wanted to do in Hollywood was to go to the Disney Soda Shop for ice cream. It was so exciting to have that little bit of Disney in the middle of all the craziness!

IMG_4286.jpg

We walked in and it was very crowded, being so hot outside today I suppose. Luckily, as we were waiting to be seated, a family left the window booth in the front. Score!

IMG_4296.jpg

I was quite excited to see peppermint ice cream on the menu, so I didn't even look any further to the sundaes after I saw that. Olivia had strawberry and Jim had cookies and cream (or was it rocky road?) Anyway, it was not pink like the girls' ice cream.

IMG_4290.jpg

This is how your cone comes to you so there won't be any drippage. It also comes in handy when yours truly had to make a bathroom run and the ice cream, of course, came while I was gone. Mine was quite melted by the time I returned and I couldn't even get it back in the cone, so I just left it in the dish and crumbled the sugar cone on top. Crunch in every bite!

Here are a couple of pics of the inside--I thought they were in focus until I downloaded them, so hopefully they'll be okay. (Damn this new nearsightedness! :rotfl:)

IMG_4292.jpg

IMG_4293.jpg

We did a little Disney shopping after finishing our ice cream and found a very cute refrigerator magnet with the Soda Shop logo on it and whogirl found Minnie and Mickey washcloths and a Wiinnie the Pooh pen that has a hanging Pooh bear from the top. I really, really, really wanted the big coffee mug with the logo but knew we wouldn't have room for it on the return flight home. Note: I am NEVER flying with all carry-ons ever again. One good stroke of luck was that the ice cream shop is the only place on the strip that will verify your parking besides the shops inside Highland! Woo-hoo!

Time to leave, let say 'bye to Mickey!

Some random downtown shots. Yeah, I know I need practice...

IMG_4298.jpg

Looking left...

IMG_4300.jpg

Looking right.

We decided at this point we were very hot and tired and ready to go back home to my aunt's. It was only 88 degrees this day downtown, but was 98 in the valley. Hopefully we had missed the hottest part of the day when we returned!

We walked through the H&H bldg. trying to find our way to the correct elevators to take us to the parking garage. First valet we asked just told us to go inside and upstairs and we would see the elevator. Well, this is a very large hotel and shopping complex, so of course we made lots of u-turns on foot. It did enable us to stumble upon this inside:

IMG_4303.jpg

And afforded an okay view of this:

IMG_4301.jpg
.

We finally managed to flag down a maintenance worker and between my broken Spanish and his nonexistent English, we found the elevator to get to our car. Whew! DH was impressed with me. I was just glad to get into some air conditioning.

It was an uneventful drive home where a very yippy puppy and my wonderful aunt were waiting for us with homemade lasagna. Mmmm! One caveat: we walk in the door and immediately see that the table is set for seven. Again. Now, we love family, but have never been used to it being more than just immediately family when we visit, at least most of the time. DH was missing his down town and time just to talk with my aunt and relax without having to be "on", you know?

Again, love my family, but cousin M. was about to drive dh crazy. Enough so that he accepted a 24 oz. can of Bud to ease the pain of the conversation. :rotfl: (In general, we don't do Budweiser, and we never do beer out of a can). Also, it seems there was an unspoken battle for the leftovers every night. DH had missed out on any leftover pecan pie last night, so in the middle of dinner I hear him mentioning how good the lasagna will be for breakfast in the morning! I almost choked on my garlic toast to keep from laughing! How can two 40ish year old men become 7 year olds so quick?

After dinner we took Olivia and K. swimming, which was very relaxing. We are very appreciative of all the F. does for my aunt that we cannot, living 3000 miles away. For this reason I will put up with any craziness of my cousin. The kids had a great time, the air was nice and cool and it was a great end to a very busy day. We planned to go to Santa Barbara the next day so my aunt could visit a dear friend while we went sightseeing. At the last moment Aunt S. decided to let us go on, that she would rather not "bother" us with having to drop her off, come back for her at a certain time, etc. etc. Nothing we could say would talk her out of it, but she assured us that F. would take her up there one day soon. This made me very sad.:sad1: It's hard to see your family members get older, and not be able to do everything they want to without help from others. I really hope they get to Santa Barbara this summer--I would hate for S. to have to wait till we come back next summer to go.

Ok, didn't mean to end on a melancholy note, so here's some :dance3: and a :woohoo: and a :yay: for all you readers! Thanks for sticking with me on the loooonnnggg wait for Disneyland!

Next up: Solvang and Santa Barbara.

Great update!

Why do they only have this available at Christmas?? I'll admit that once I smushed up a couple of those little butter party mints in a vanilla Frosty trying to make peppermint ice cream. Yeah, that was nasty.

What a fun update! I haven't been to LA in more than 20 years ... definitely have got to get back out there with the hubba and take in the sights.

Olivia looks too cute! :goodvibes

Fun Day ! Thank you for posting the pictures of the ice cream shop, that is on my list of things to do when we go out in Dec. to visit the MIL I was excited to see it.

July 26,2009

I had requested a visitor's guide from Santa Barbara county months before our trip. One of the nifty little towns it showed nearby was Solvang, so we decided to head up there before actually stopping in Santa Barbara, so SB would be on our way back. By 7:30 a.m. we were ready to get on the road with a cooler full of water and homemade oatmeal cookies!

On our way we see this:

For some reason, this just struck me as too funny, so we vowed to stop on the way back! Very soon we saw the signs for Solvang up ahead and then the cutest little town came into view!

IMG_4313.jpg

The town proper is small, just a few blocks long with hotels and restaurants on the main strip and then a myriad of little shops and bakeries along the street parallel to this. We parked on the side street and realized that it was only about 9:35 am, when we got out of the car. We moseyed up the street and spied a bakery (who am I kidding, there are a dozen bakeries here and the smell was wonderful!). This was Olsen's Bakery which is a carb lover's dream! Get your bibs ready, because here it comes--
