My husband - to try and win our discussion just said - Ask on your DISboards, you'll see - your wrrrong. I make him the old fashion fruit cake - the recipe has 28 cups of the fruit and nuts, plus 12 eggs and sugar and spices and cake stuff. I suggested I only make half of my normal recipe because he is the only one who eats it. Plus it costs a bazillion dollars to make.

He disagrees with my making only half as much. Because I am wrong that no one in our world likes it but him and no one wants it as a gift (I eat it but only with a lot of sharp good cheese and a stiff drink). So the questions - who likes fruit cake?? Who would rather a Palo Chocolate Souffle (IS that cheating to ask you to compare?)

Val

Tell Bob I'll come up and help him eat fruit cake. You and my DH can have all the Palo Chocolate Souffle you want. I don't care for it - could be because chocolate is not one of my fave foods.

We buy the Costco fruit cakes now - the price is right and they freeze - DH makes individually-wrapped slices for later. My FIL loved the fruit cake version that required 1 pound each of candied cherries, candied pineapple and pecans, with just enough batter to hold them together. It was good.

I also love the Christmas cake with marzipan and frosting. YUM!!! We do a Kiwi version of it. Another fave "fruit cake" is made with Turkish apricots and pecans. Not a traditional fruitcake, though.

I think I'll go cut a piece of the Costco fruit cake and have it with a cup of coffee.:rotfl2:

Did any of you see this? We were wondering why a crew member didn't stop him from entering a NO PASSENGER ZONE. I thought there were always "eyes" on the No Passenger areas, especially critical ones, like access to the anchor.

(CNN) -- A Holland America cruise ship was disrupted early Saturday morning by an intoxicated passenger who released the ship's anchor, according to an affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun website.
California resident Rick Ehlert, 44, released the anchor and a life buoy between 5:25 a.m. and 5:55 a.m., according to the affidavit.
The MS Ryndam was unharmed, but the release of the anchor could have caused "significant damage to the ship's rudder or propeller, which could disable the ship's ability to maneuver, or puncturing of the ship, which could result in sinking or severe flooding," according to the affidavit.
The ship was traveling from Costa Maya, Mexico, to Tampa, Florida.
A surveillance video shows Ehlert taking multiple steps to deploy the anchor while the ship was in motion. The MS Ryndam's maximum speed is 22 knots, which is approximately 25 mph, according to Holland America's website.
Ehlert confessed to dropping the ship's anchor when questioned by special agents from the FBI. He admitted to being intoxicated at the time and detailed the multiple steps he took in deploying the anchor, including entering an area marked as off-limits to passengers.
"There is probable cause to believe on November 27 that Rick Ehlert did attempt to damage, destroy, disable, or wreck a vessel," FBI agent John Manning stated in the affidavit.
Ehlert was arrested Sunday on a felony charge and taken into custody. He has not yet hired an attorney, according to the office of the magistrate who is handling the case.

Well that is a bit scary isn't it?

I don't like regular fruit cake, but I like the Polish version - stollen. We use to make 20 loaves every Christmas and hand it out.

No documents by regular mail today :confused3

Nor here!

I'd rather eat a cow pie than a fruit cake.

But you married me! (I just realized the double entandre I made there...)

PALOs! PALOs! PALOs!, oh and PALOs!:rotfl:

My Godmother would send a beautiful fruit & nut bread-type cake, with a bourbon rum topping...the topping didn't make it to the cake during the last years she sent me:confused3:rolleyes1:confused3!

Val...good to know that the DISboards family fall into 'your' camp!! Looking forward to meeting :grouphug:EVERYONE:grouphug:, including this fruitcake-loving Bob of yours!!

no cruise docs here, then again our mail doesn't arrive until the sun is very low in the evening sky!

If I make it through this week. I've had to rewrite the first half of my thesis this week on top of all the rest of the projects due this week. And work has been kicking my behind. I do not have a backup, or anyone who can do my job. All I can do is prepare people to do the immediate tasks while I'm gone and pray that nothing breaks. So on top of my regular job, I'm creating a how to guide on how to do my job. By the time I go to bed at night, I'm so exhausted I can't even see straight.
HOWEVER, I bought my first mini-skirt since high school and if that wasn't surprising enough, I actually like myself in it. I've never have Heidi Klum's body, but I'm pretty darn happy with what I've got (which is officially a US size 4 - haven't seen that since sophomore year of college - 1996 to be exact). I still have work to do to get things how I want them, I'm I'm pretty certain I'm done with my diet. Hello normal (but very modified) regular eating!
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
Well, we have a new family member - DD got a new dachshund puppy. Since the next few weeks are going to be very hectic with a couple of trips to Dallas, a trip to Atlanta for DD, and of course, the cruise, he'll be living with my friend until we get back. We were not going to get him since we have so much going on right now but my friend offered to keep him until we are ready. He came from her aunt's dog and she knew how much Haley has wanted her own dog. Anyway, DD gets to go visit him everyday and he can come spend some time with us here. He's 7 weeks old, born 10/10/10! She named him Frodo Baggins since he's short like a hobbit! He's so cute and it's fun to watch him with our other dachshund.
:goodvibes
We are with DU, and I thought ours came from DCL, but I have thrown the packaging away so can't check.

We have power at home, It took me 2 hours to get to work, It madness all the snow. The beagle girl hates it cause it higher than her bum and she doesnt like to toilet! Orly will pee/poo anywhere as long as its outside.
My poor little pony ..her belly is touching the snow... I cant think of ever having so much snow any time never mind in november.

WOW time does fly. Getting home from New York tomorrow. Only have a couple weeks to get ready. I leave in 2 weeks to go scuba diving with 2 of my grandchildren. We get back on Christmas eve. Then off to the cruise on Jan 5th with 2 of my other grandkids. Ughhh this is a busy time of yr.

Think I am addicted to this site. It is the first place I go when I log in. I can't wait to meet ya'll

Me Too!! Good addiction to have though!

Caught up for the moment. Recovering for another all nighter. Today is colleg application deadline for the youngest. Never stayed up all night with the other two. This one is going to kill me by the time she finally graduates. But I'm sure I'll miss it in a few years. Right? Someone tell me I'm right.

Also, I'm getting to darn old to be pulling consecutive back-to-back all nighters. Why doesn't this family listen.

Yes, sadly you are right. I do miss a lot now that youngest is away at college

I'd rather eat a cow pie than a fruit cake.

Chocolate Suffle for sure. Although I made fruitcake once - dried fruit and white chocolate and it was not bad but not good enough to have ever made it a second time.

If given the choice to eat fruit cake or cancel the cruise, I will cancel. That should say enough on my thoughts about fruit cake.

Now, I think I would choke down a piece if it were just between the two.

I'd rather eat a cow pie than a fruit cake.

Eww! I would just say no thank-you to both!

Holy neds! That is scary - beyond scary actually.

Alan - whatever is up (or down) I hope it rights itself and you will be there.

Enjoy your evening everyone!

My late grandmother used to make fruitcake every year to give out. She said people loved it but i wasn't a fan. But fruitcake does have a good memory for me. My last cooking experience with my grandmother was me helping her make the fruitcake in my kitchen about 10 years ago. I would eat it in a heartbeat if I could just have one more moment like that.

Glad you have power. Funny about the beagle girl. Sounds like my Cinder when the grass needs to be cut. Since she's got such short legs (dachshund) she hates to go in the grass when it needs to be cut.

Yea to having power again!!!

I hate when ours goes out since we're on a well for water and septic tank for sewer, no power equals no toilets.

I'll take chocolate anything over a fruit cake please.

Here is the latest on our request for the Champagne Girls and Mixology and Hawaiian Shirt Contest tasting.

My message:

Dorothy

Hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

I have an update on the number of people from the 1/6/11 Disney Wonder Panama Canal Cruise from the DISboards who are interested in the Champagne Girls champagne tasting and the Mixology/Hawaiian shirt, drink of the day tasting.

47 Ladies are looking forward to the boas and tiara champagne tasting.

58 cruisers are packing their Hawaiian shirts for the mixology, drink of the day, tasting.

Here are the questions I have received from the group:

1) Can DCL provide formal tasting and instruction plus one full size alcoholic drink?
2) Will DCL provide a non-alcoholic choice for those who want to attend but not drink alcohol?
3) What would be the cost posted to each attendees cabin?
4) What is the price for alcoholic versus non-alcoholic?
5) Does DCL allow individuals under the drinking age in the room during the tasting?
6) What is DCL's definition of drinking age?
7) When will we know if DCL can provide the tasting?
8) When will be the latest individuals can sign up for the tasting?
9) If DCL does the tasting for us, what info will they need.

Thanks for all your help!

Valerie
DCL response:
The space has been requested but nothing has come back to me yet.

I don’t see at this point why they would not approve it. They usually confirm space at the last minute so it is nothing to be concerned about at this time.

I will need the names and room numbers of those attending.

Thanks,

Knock on wood - we won't have "no power" ever again. Last Friday, we had a standby generator installed.

Hi all

3mmm here. This is a new disname for my son. He's almost 11 and just posted on the tween thread. He's hoping to find some kids to hang out with. If you have a tween, especially if they are boys, please send them over to the tween thread. There's been a little bit of activity recently. Hoping it will increase as the kids get more excited as it gets closer. I'm sure Mitchell would love to commiserate with any other kids out there who have to do school work over Christmas vacation.

I just heard from DCL. She has not confirmed the Champagne Girls nor the mixology tasting. However, she did say, if the tasting was approved she would need the name (name the reservation is in), cabin number and number of tickets to charge each cabin. Sounds promising to me. If you want to start sending me your names, please PM me. Look on page 181 for the list to confirm your count and room number too. I will not give anything to DCL until I hear about the cost and get your individual approval. Val

Jeff still hasn't heard anything from them.

I haven't heard anything from DCL and they tell me they can not give me a name of someone to contact? Can you send me your contact so I can try that way. I faxed a request for the SM reveal quite some time ago.

I actually like fruitcake and am not a fan of chocolate so I guess i would choose the fruitcake!

Just got back from doing errands. Bought the few things I still needed to make Bob's fruitcake. Also took a suitcase to the local shoe repair man to fix the zipper. Finally, picked up a top to wear with black velvet pants on semi-form night, black, tourquoise and amathyst harlequin design in sequins with gold trim on the edges of the neck, long sleeves and bottom. Kind of pretty - now the trick is to still fit into it after the holidays.

It was fun to read all the comments on the fruit cake. Yes, it does have Christmas memories for many of us. When I was little, my grandmother and I use to make the fruitcakes (she was from the UK and had a lot of recipes from home) and then we would deliver them to all the "old" people, relatives and friends. Of course I had to dressup in Sunday clothes to go with her and I always came home with money they would slip to me. I don't remember ever eating the cake or her bourbon balls as a kid though.

Bob & I grew-up pretty differently. I got cracker-jacks and lifesavers in my Xmas stocking. His dad was an imported food and wine buyer. He remembers getting marzipan fruits, swiss chocolate, fruit jellies and fruitcake in his.

Someone asked about how long the cake lasts. I continue to soak it in the madeira after I make it, wrap in cheese cloth and put into my cake tin. After the holidays I sprinkle with more booze, slice it up, wrap them in individual slices and put into tins. They have sooo much booze in them, plus they are mostly candied fruit and nuts they have never gone bad nor dried out - weird.

I would love to have the recipe for stollen (you don't make your own filo dought do you????) Maybe we could exchange our family Christmas recipes. Val
