From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

I loved this update! I am so tempted to book CG now for September. :rotfl2:

It looks like they gave Katharine a mohawk!! :rotfl2:

Katharina, you vacation pictures are wonderful! What great sights!

Nice review of California Grill, Magdalene and Katharina. The sushi looked great, and I would love to try that bison.

On our way to The Wave we actually found the check-in desk for California Grill before we found The Wave. We had to ask them how to get there!

Lovely pictures - both of vacation and of the meal!

I agree with you about Wishes as well. It's a different experience, but not nearly as nice as watching from Main Street.

Your meal looks, and sounds, delicious! That dessert looks wonderful!!!

Love the little SE video too. I never knew you could send the video, we'll have to check into that! The last time I attempted to send myself a picture from Disney (in the Imagination Station), I got someone else!

Meantime, I'll try to guess what you got! :goodvibes

So, did you guess right?? :goodvibes

Great review of CG! It's really interesting to see what other people order. I would never have considered ordering the Bison. It's not too gamey tasting is it? From your review, I'll have to give it a try.

I like game meat, so I was not worried about that. And as far as I remember it wasn't gamey in the way of venison. But it had more of a meat taste to eat than normal beef. It is very lean, therefore they recommend it not to be cooked more than medium rare, otherwise it can be rather dry. If you like red meat, I would recommend to try it!

I completely agree with you about watching Wishes from CG. For one thing, the glare off the glass makes it very difficult to take pictures. If my memory serves me right, they do dim the lights and pipe in the music but most people continue talking. Really ruins the mood :headache: We also didn't have a table right beside the window and our view was obstructed by people's heads and a giant pillar. I'd also skip watching Wishes from Poly beach... even from the balcony of your room. Unless you really want to get away from the crowds. It's just not the same. I would much rather sit on Main Street to watch the fireworks.

we were really lucky that the people around us stopped talking. On my previous visits we always just walked out to the observation platform and as long as you don't have a real window table, I would recommend to do that. Take your drink with you. If you let your server know that you are planning to do that, they will make sure to pace your meal accordingly.

If interested, check out my experience at CG in November 2009 HERE and HERE

Thanks for the links. Sounds like you had a great meal! And you had a similar idea as us, but you got a whole bottle of champagne! :goodvibes

Lovely pics all around!

I loved this update! I am so tempted to book CG now for September. :rotfl2:

It looks like they gave Katharine a mohawk!! :rotfl2:

CG is a great place, but it wasn't our favourite meal of the trip! But I think with the sushi and the flatbreads you can make a wonderful meal there which does not have huge portions!

The Spaceship Earth cameras tend to do that to people. I found her new hair style quite amusing! :goodvibes

Nice review of California Grill, Magdalene and Katharina. The sushi looked great, and I would love to try that bison.

It is really great food at CG. I loved being able to have the bison, I would not have a chance anywhere here in Germany!

On our way to The Wave we actually found the check-in desk for California Grill before we found The Wave. We had to ask them how to get there!

Those Contemporary restaurants are quite hidden. I somehow expected everything to be at lobby level - i.e. where the monorail arrives. :confused3

Lovely pictures - both of vacation and of the meal!

I agree with you about Wishes as well. It's a different experience, but not nearly as nice as watching from Main Street.

Your meal looks, and sounds, delicious! That dessert looks wonderful!!!

Thanks! It was a wonderful meal! :goodvibes And that was the meal where we had the same server as you had in December.

Love the little SE video too. I never knew you could send the video, we'll have to check into that! The last time I attempted to send myself a picture from Disney (in the Imagination Station), I got someone else!

You should definitely try it. I am always surprised that I keep seeing new videos about my future! I wonder how many different combinations there are?

We will be in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Your sister and I are trying to plan a DIS meet in Nuremberg if possible. I am so excited to come and visit Germany this has been a dream trip for us for a long time. It's hard to believe that it is coming so quick! I feel so unprepared and feeling stressed and worried. Just pretrip nerves I guess. My husband and I are celebrating 20 years of marriage. :goodvibes

From what I read here on the boards and from waht Magdalene told me, I think you do not have to worry at all, you seem to prepare the trip very thoroughly!!! It is a great way to celebrate your anniversary.

And I think you might want to mention that the first picture is from a town called Budvar - the German name for it is Budweis, which might be quite familiar to our American readers! ;)

Oh yes - that is where the REAL Budweiser Beer is brewed!

Wow, was für ein toller Trip Report. :thumbsup2

I enjoyed your Trip report and can’t wait for the next part.

We had our first WDW visit last year in October and for us the Animal Kingdom was the park that we didn’t liked that much. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great park and if they would have the same park in Paris I would walk on my knees from Nuremberg to Paris just to see it.
But we just liked the other parks much more than Animal Kingdom.

The day we spent at the Animal Kingdom was also the hottest day of our trip last year. We had 98° and as almost everything is outside in this park we could not enjoy this day as we wanted.

If you like you can find my (much shorter than yours) trip report here.

Nope. Wasn't even close! The only thing I guessed right on was a drink before dinner- but thought you'd go cocktail, not champagne! The bison was a complete, albeit pleasant, shock; the sushi not so much.

So glad you enjoyed your bananas. Do they come with airsick bags?:lmao: I think I'd need one.

But the sorbet looked fabulous!! Nice and light to finish that meal off!

Hmmmm... WISHES and CG.... I do know I"ll get a chance to cast my opinionated vote- I"m not really sure which way I'd go. I know I"ll be seeing WIshes another couple times, so to have one that's sort of "in the background" might not be so bad.

Gary's the guy we'll be asking for. I won't forget!

You're right, why on earth would they not have at least 2 choices for a lactose free meal? It's a pretty common allergy/sensitivity, AND they KNEW ahead of time for goodness sake!! :confused3 Odd indeed!

Thanks! It was a wonderful meal! :goodvibes And that was the meal where we had the same server as you had in December.

Ah! That's right, Topher. His name was so unique, so I remembered it. Plus, he is from Wisconsin, and that is right next to Minnesota, so that helps me remember too.

I didn't mention it, but I completely agree with Liesa, they knew in ADVANCE of Katharina's sensitivity, for being a signature they really should have more choices!! It's a bit surprising when places like Ohana or Boma will go to great extents, but the CG won't...:confused3

Hallo Marcus und Herzlich Willkommen! :welcome:

Thanks for the compliment! I think I remember you from the DLP boards here, I was hanging out there for a while when I was planning our 2007 trip there. And I was surprised to find someone on the DIS from Nuremberg! I am always a bit surprised how few Germans one encounters on the boards... But you are the second in our TR - Annichan is from Germany as well! :goodvibes And we have a great bunch of readers who have Germans ancestors. ;)

We had our first WDW visit last year in October and for us the Animal Kingdom was the park that we didn’t liked that much. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great park and if they would have the same park in Paris I would walk on my knees from Nuremberg to Paris just to see it.

The day we spent at the Animal Kingdom was also the hottest day of our trip last year. We had 98° and as almost everything is outside in this park we could not enjoy this day as we wanted.

On my first trip I did not like AK that much either. I have never experienced a really hot day there since I am always at WDW in the winter, so this definitely helps. After a few days of 98 here in Berlin, I am certain that I would have difficulty to enjoy any park at WDW in that weather!

Thanks for the links, Katharina and I both read your thoughts with interest since we both compared WDW and DLP quite a lot as well! I think we agree with you in most points, especially the difference in the Cast Members and also the atmosphere between the guests, you mention the conversations you had, I love that, too!

The only thing we were really surprised about was that you liked the hotel breakfast at DLP: we think it is really horrible, crowded, noisy and annoying that you have to get a specific time. And the one thing we never understood: why do they serve the cheese only in cubes, not in slices?? But we would have really loved a normal bread roll with some ham after a few days having pastries and waffles for breakfast...

Nope. Wasn't even close! The only thing I guessed right on was a drink before dinner- but thought you'd go cocktail, not champagne! The bison was a complete, albeit pleasant, shock; the sushi not so much.

:goodvibes I am glad that we could surprise you!! I think the good thing about CG is that the menu changes so often! I had no idea that there would be bison on the menu before we got there. For me it was a great discovery! I know that Artist Point has it as well - is it common in nicer restaurants in the Pacific North West?

So glad you enjoyed your bananas. Do they come with airsick bags?:lmao: I think I'd need one.

:banana::banana::banana:
Do you have problems with bananas when others eat them as well?? ;)

But the sorbet looked fabulous!! Nice and light to finish that meal off!

I thought it was pretty funny that the put a flame into the ice! :lmao:

Hmmmm... WISHES and CG.... I do know I"ll get a chance to cast my opinionated vote- I"m not really sure which way I'd go. I know I"ll be seeing WIshes another couple times, so to have one that's sort of "in the background" might not be so bad.

If you can see Wishes from Main Street, it is a nice additional show for CG. I just read so often about people who go there specifically to see Wishes and then I would say plan your meal so that you finish before Wishes, walk over to the MK and then see it from there. But for you it should work fine. Will you be eating on your own there or with the ladies?

Gary's the guy we'll be asking for. I won't forget!

You're right, why on earth would they not have at least 2 choices for a lactose free meal? It's a pretty common allergy/sensitivity, AND they KNEW ahead of time for goodness sake!! :confused3 Odd indeed!

Yes, that's why we went through the whole procedure of informing them ahead of time. But don't worry, things got better afterwards!

Ah! That's right, Topher. His name was so unique, so I remembered it. Plus, he is from Wisconsin, and that is right next to Minnesota, so that helps me remember too.

We had wonderful experiences at other signature dinners, especially one at the end of our trip!

But in the end, I think, even though it was a bit intimidating how the chef handled it at CG, I think it was still very good for Katharina to actually really know what was in the meal and feel like she could eat out without worrying about there being milk in the meal.

That's why I love TRs- especially when reading ones where you "know" the people writing them better than others. It's fun to follow along and learn more.

Not really sure- when we left Oregon, we had 4 little ones, and didnt' eat out a lot- but yes, I imagine you could get it easily as places like Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood and such. We could even buy it in our grocery stores regularly, and we've been to many BBQs where the hosts would serve this over beef.

:banana::banana::banana:
Do you have problems with bananas when others eat them as well?? ;)

No, you all can thoroughly enjoy your nanners. I can say your dessert was amazingly beautiful!! At least it had that going for it. :goodvibes

I thought it was pretty funny that the put a flame into the ice! :lmao:

That was funny!! I think I actually may have ordered this! I love mango!! Especially with Thai sticky rice and coconut milk. :cloud9:

I only need to see wishes once- that's enough for me. I'd rather be hitting the short wait times at rides.

Leaving the table in the middle of the meal just feels odd in a restaurant. I'd be too scared that they'd think we were pulling a "Dine N' Dash".

Thanks for the links. Sounds like you had a great meal! And you had a similar idea as us, but you got a whole bottle of champagne! :goodvibes

We were feeling more like celebrating in a BIGGER way I guess
Probably could've done with the one glass but the champagne Bubba wanted me to try only came in bottle form. I hate when they do that.

As a gift to my special friend Liesa, I'll be bringing a whole bunch of bananas for her at the DC Meet :thumbsup2

Wow, sounds like a fantastic evening and a great meal at Cali Grill. Sorry the chef wasn't more accommodating. At least you had a good server. I totally know what you mean about the fireworks. I much prefer to see them close up and in person.

Hello Magdalene & Katharina! :wave2:

I'm finally caught up again and loving all the updates and beautiful pictures!! I haven't had much time online as much lately, but I keep up with my favorites! :lovestruc

I just wanted to say...I think it's so awesome you guys are meeting up with Liesa and her family and showing her around! How cool is that?! :cool1: Liesa - bragging moment - I'm not sure if you remember but I lived there for 2 1/2 years and LOVED it. It's "home" to me (lived in Germany for 10 years) so I know you'll love it! Now that my DS is almost 7, I hope to take him with us overseas so he can experiment and see where I grew up. You are in for a real treat because Nuernberg truly is a very special place! If I can help in any way as well, I'd be glad to. I know the lovely sisters have it covered but I just wanted to throw it out there!

Ok, back to the regularly scheduled programming! :rotfl2:

I usually don't read every personal response, but this one caught my eye...

:rotfl: She will just LOVE you!!!! :lmao: (maybe she can bring them for maroo, so maroo can save her snack credits/spare change! ;))

That's why I love TRs- especially when reading ones where you "know" the people writing them better than others. It's fun to follow along and learn more.

It is actually even interesting when you find out new things about your fellow travellers! Like, I did not know that Katharina's favourite fruit (or favourite sorbet) is mango! I am sure you will learn a lot about the two other ladies during your trip as well! :goodvibes

Not really sure- when we left Oregon, we had 4 little ones, and didnt' eat out a lot- but yes, I imagine you could get it easily as places like Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood and such. I just googled Timberline Lodge and must say that I would love to go there: What a gorgeous place!!! Wow!! Bison for a BBQ sounds delicious, too! :goodvibes

No, you all can thoroughly enjoy your nanners. I can say your dessert was amazingly beautiful!! At least it had that going for it. :goodvibes

That's one thing I like about the signature restaurants: They put a lot of effort into presentation (sometimes perhaps a bit too much). This made me realize that this is possibly one thing I don't like about American casual restaurants... I could never quite say what it was, but for me the dishes at casual restaurants often look like the food was just thrown onto the plate. Here in Germany even simple restaurants tend to decorate your plate at least a tiny bit. The most common garnish is a leave of lettuce and a slice of tomato or a sprig of parsley. While this is absolutely useless (no dressing and you often get a side salad anyway), it kind of distinguishes the restaurant dish from what your plate would look like at home. And I think that's it what I am missing at American casual restaurants in general...

I only need to see wishes once- that's enough for me. I'd rather be hitting the short wait times at rides.

Katharina and you would make good touring companions then! :thumbsup2

Maybe I'll take the plunge the next time it's on the menu. I'm still trying to bring myself to eat rabbit. Poor bunnies.

I don't like rabbit. I can eat it (even though I may not tell my BFF about it, she loves bunnies!), but don't think it is worth it. Bison is much nicer and less specific in taste! :thumbsup2

Don't worry, many people do that at CG and if you tell your server ahead of time that you will go outside to watch wishes, they know where you are! ;)

Bubba would have been the expert on which wine to order at WDW I guess! Did they serve that champagne at Le Cellier as well? Do they serve champagne there at all??? I was very impressed by our server at Le Cellier in 2009 which told me all about the different types of beer available there. I had two different ones. She was a great server, she had the same name as you and was from the town which has the largest Octoberfest/beer fest in Canada. :goodvibes

It was a wonderful experience. Katharina mentioned yesterday that she thought that the next time she would just be more proactive and ask for getting things substituted... :confused3

Hi Heather, Great to see you! I was wondering recently what had happened to you. But I think we all know phases when getting online just isn't possible as much! :goodvibes Liesa has a great touring program planned for Nuremberg and I am certain that she will enjoy it there! And we will have a lot of fun meeting up with each other! I hope to meet you in Nuremberg one day as well! :goodvibes

January 30

Another early morning for us – the plan was to be at Epcot for rope drop. So we got up at 6:30 am. Our breakfast that morning was a bit more substantial than the days before and we got the classic CS breakfast that I had found out about in 2008: A kid's meal Mickey waffle with bacon and grapes. I came across that one morning when I wanted a waffle, but not a huge one like in the adult meal and therefore asked for the small ones. So I got my kid's meal and found out that it comes with bacon (or sausage) and apple sauce (which can be substituted for grapes) and a small drink – juice or milk. And all of that for 4.39 $. For me this is the perfect breakfast!!

DSC06377.jpg

As you can see, I had them too and no, they were not lactose free, but I just had to risk a runny nose and some coughing for Mickey waffles.

This morning was a bit overcast:

DSC06378.jpg

And it was definitely cooler. So we put on our fleeces... We headed out to the bus a little before 8 am and had to wait for about 10 minutes for a bus. While waiting we noticed that within the time period from 8:00 to 8:05 am there was a bus for every park. This seemed to fit in with our experience the day before when we just had missed that 8 am AK bus.

So once again we were early in getting to the park and arrived at around 8:20 am. We were the first at the turnstiles again. But this time we weren't just the first at our turnstile, no, we were the first at all the turnstiles!!!!

DSC06379.jpg

We really liked the colours in the planter in front of Spaceship Earth (which we could see from our waiting point):

DSC06381.jpg

While we were waiting more people arrived and the party standing next to us at the turnstiles was discussing whether it would make more sense to get a FP for Soarin first and then ride it or ride first and then get the FP. After listening to them for a bit, I just could not help it, but had to offer them my opinion: Get a FP first, then ride!!

Once they opened the turnstiles there were still not very long lines behind us, but I told Katharina that we had to move quickly to get to the rope, which would be there once we had walked past Spaceship Earth. So we did this and were the first to arrive at that rope as well... We positioned us on the right side of the rope, slightly off center, but not all the way to the right. And then waited for the crowds to arrive behind us. They never did. This is a picture of the area directly behind me while I was standing at the rope:

DSC06382.jpg

Amazing, isn't it??

While we were waiting there ,a guy arrived speedwalking looking around nervously and in his hand he had a print out of a touring plan from the touringplans website from the Unofficial Guide. We somehow got to talk to him (I might have volunteered the information that he was in the correct position to get to Soarin, but he might have asked for it as well). I told him how the rope drop would work and that there wasn't any chance that he might miss Soarin, he just had to make sure to follow the people with the flight attendant's uniforms. I also told him that the touringplans are great (we were using the same one that morning), but suggested since it was looking to be an uncrowded day that he might want to get a Soarin FP as well because he most likely would want to ride again. And that due to the low crowds, he could even risk going on Soarin again immediately after the first ride. I did this last year and it worked great!

Magdalene left me a note here in the TR that we wrote “squirrel” in our notebook, but she can’t remember why. Me neither!

And then it was finally time for the official rope drop. Some characters come out from the Character Connection Spot and greet the guests as well as the Epcot family of the day which then gets to start their day with a drive in a Test Track car. The ceremony is a lot of fun when you are directly at the rope. Here are some impressions of the ceremony:

DSC06385.jpg

And then we walked behind the cast members up to the land pavilion, down the stairs and through the Sunshine Season food court – I picked up the FPs and then we went off to soar over California. It is such a beautiful ride, I am always looking forward to my first ride on my first morning in Epcot on every trip!!

It is great! I loved it! While waiting in the line Magdalene got quite nervous, the Uber-planner wanted to get some special seats for us, which we didn’t get and then she was kind of disappointed, because my wonderful sister wanted the perfect first experience of Soarin for me. Anyone out there who would act the same as her – don’t worry. I think the first time on Soarin is overwhelming wherever you sit!

When we left the Land pavilion at around 9:30 am I took this picture of the entrance:

DSC06386.jpg

Still so empty!

DSC06387.jpg

Next stop was Test Track – no wait again, we actually were told to just walk into the Briefing Room, which is the pre-show, while the pre-show was going on. I did not approve of that! I think the pre-show really explains the story of the ride and I did not want Katharina to miss out on that. But I gathered that we would ride this a second time at some point, so it was not so tragic!

We both had a laugh at the “German Blocks” - I can assure you that German roads don't feel like those German blocks you drive over at Test Track!! Unfortunately the on ride pictures for Test Track were down that morning...

And on to the next big ride in Future World: Mission Space!

DSC06388.jpg

DSC06390.jpg

Of course we chose the orange side. I told Katharina that if I survive the orange side she will be fine on it! I suspect that she still was a bit nervous about it.

We had a great trip to Mars
and some funny fellow astronauts and managed to land our space craft (for some reason it always seems to end nearly in a catastrophe, I would really like to be manage to land it once without problems, but I guess I still need more practice...).

I am a great fan of Mission Space. I know that many people think it is not inclusive enough, but for me it is a great story, I like the small amount of interactivity and then the view of earth from space is just breathtaking!

After three thrill rides in a row we felt like we needed a small break – and since Katharina had printed off the “real coffee list” from Allears.net, she knew that we were in the vicinity of some real coffee. Of course we could not resist getting a snack with our coffee...

DSC06391.jpg

Another cinnamon roll – we liked this one better than the one we had got at AKL. And the coffee was quite nice as well. At least for me, but Katharina is the bigger coffee drinker
I’m not sure, but I think I didn’t like the coffee?! I remember very vaguely not liking the soy milk and deciding to buy black coffee in the future. We had some debate about where to sit with our coffee since we were afraid it would start raining. You can see from the pictures that it was very overcast. But we were lucky and did not get wet during our break!

After the refreshing coffee, we were in the mood for further refreshments and headed to Club Cool. As most of you know this is an area in Future World where Coca Cola offers some of their products, which they only have in certain areas of the world. There is a drink from Germany as well: Mezzo Mix. Which is a mix of coke with orange soda
or pop and a popular drink in Germany. Mezzo Mix is actually just the Coke brand name for it. Another brand is Spezi – and Spezi is also used as the generic name for this drink. It is pronounced like “shpay-tsee”

Katharina and I were a bit confused by the sign, which explained about Mezzo Mix though:

DSC06778.jpg

And it is true that Germans like to mix different drinks together. Other examples are “Apfelschorle”: apple juice and sparkling mineral water, “Radler”: beer and lemonade, “Russe”: beer and coke or “Weinsschorle”: wine with sparkling mineral water. But we have never heard of anyone in Germany who mixes beer with Mezzo Mix!!

Of course Katharina had to try the Beverly:

DSC06392.jpg

Are you surprised that she does not look disgusted? Well, the truth it, Beverly does not taste horrid to us. It tastes like Campari which is very popular here in Germany. And Katharina and I both like it – especially with orange juice! It is also similar to tonic water... I guess we just like bitter as a taste...

Still, don't worry, I don't see myself drinking vast amounts of Beverly. However, I think I need to make sure if I ever get to Italy, to check out the supermarkets there whether Beverly is really sold that much...

We browsed the shop a bit and Katharina really liked these shot glasses:
