From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

Hmmmm!! I see we have another luscious update to pour over, but I haven't the strength!! (LOL! I sound like Mrs. Bennet!) REally, my head is aching, and my stomach wasnt' ready for the delicious spaghetti Mikki made. Back to bed for me. Which sadly means, this update will have to wait until Monday AM.

(and don't think I've not noticed the banana talk- I"m coming after ya'll):rolleyes1

Great Update !!! I do plan on at least getting Carol to try Beverley in October !!I think she will have done my annual evaluation by then:rotfl2::rotfl2:

It is actually even interesting when you find out new things about your fellow travellers! Like, I did not know that Katharina's favourite fruit (or favourite sorbet) is mango! I am sure you will learn a lot about the two other ladies during your trip as well! :goodvibes

And now my favourite sorbet is not mango anymore but chocolate sorbet ... heavenly!

So I got my kid's meal and found out that it comes with bacon (or sausage) and apple sauce (which can be substituted for grapes) and a small drink – juice or milk. And all of that for 4.39 $. For me this is the perfect breakfast!!

DSC06377.jpg

I guess I just assumed that you had to be a kid to get one of those kids meals. I may have to try this sometime when I'm not very hungry. (Not sure when that'll be though.)

Magdalene left me a note here in the TR that we wrote “squirrel” in our notebook, but she can’t remember why. Me neither!

You probably just got distracted....like Dug.

We both had a laugh at the “German Blocks” - I can assure you that German roads don't feel like those German blocks you drive over at Test Track!!

We Americans wondered how you folks drive around on those bumpy roads all the time. (Just kidding)

There is a drink from Germany as well: Mezzo Mix. Which is a mix of coke with orange soda
or pop and a popular drink in Germany.

Good edit Katharina! Thanks for thinking of us "pop" people.

I love how you throw in little tidbits about Germany like the block roads and the soft drinks. It's cool to hear about that culture.

My dad wants us to take a trip to Germany with him next year. In the military, he spent lots of time there, and I mentioned once before, it's our heritage.

Sounds like a great morning at Epcot! I didn't realize until very recently that Epcot has a "Family of the Day" and they get to ride in a Test Track car, I think that is very cool! I would LOVE it! But, I suppose you have to be early to the turnstiles to be the Family of the Day...and well...we have YET to make a rope drop. :rolleyes1

I think Beverly mixed with orange juice sounds good...the bitter with the sweet to make a balanced drink! We haven't done Club Cool the past couple of trips, so I can't remember which one I liked the best, or how Beverly actually tasted though!

I hope you will feel better soon! But how wonderful that you have a daughter who can cook for you and your family when you are ill!! :goodvibes

:lmao: Yes, you better make sure of that before you get your boss to try it! I hope you will get a funny picture of her!

Hoe could I forget...

At the CS you can just order what you want - they won't ask you wether you have a child who will then eat the meal. Most of the times the kids meals aren't that appealing anyway, but for the Mickey waffle, I really like it!

You probably just got distracted....like Dug.

:lmao: Great answer!

We thought so and wanted to make that clear. Especially since you know from first hand experience that Belgian roads are really as horrible as the "Belgian blocks" at Test Track! ;)

Good edit Katharina! Thanks for thinking of us "pop" people.

Yes, she has learned a lot from being on the DIS! But this is also a good point to mention that Katharina actually is a great editor for the TR! You are all lucky that she gets to read everything first and manages to eradicate lots of typos, bad grammar and unintelligible sentences. Thanks for that Katharina!! :goodvibes

But I guess it gives us a short reprieve from this: :scared1:

She sounded rather vengeful!!!

I am glad that you enjoy the tidbits about Germany! I think everyone here brings with them a different perspective and that's one thing I enjoy about TRs.

Yes, I remember that you mentioned the German heritage. I think going with your dad would be a really interesting trip! A few years ago we went on a family trip to the area where my father grew up and it was really interesting to hear all the stories about how he lived there as a kid. So I guess your father will have many stories to tell as well! And if you can convince him to go on a side trip to the island of Sylt there might even be some surfing for you as well! ;) But I think it is more windsurfing there...

Yes, being there really early would be kind of important... ;) But I think they tend to pick families with slightly older children since the family of the day gets to ride on Soarin and Test Track first thing in the morning. So they might want to make sure that the whole family can ride it. I think so far as I remember the kids are usually at least 5 or so... But they also have a family opening the park at the turnstiles.

I think Beverly mixed with orange juice sounds good...the bitter with the sweet to make a balanced drink! We haven't done Club Cool the past couple of trips, so I can't remember which one I liked the best, or how Beverly actually tasted though!

Well, one thing to put on your list of things to do in September! :goodvibes

Dear readers, I am off on a vacation to England tomorrow early in the morning! So there won't be any updates until I return on August 3. I hope everyone continues to have a great summer, I will be looking forward to a few days in London and then hiking along the coastline in Dorset. My father and I will hike the last stretch of the South West Coast Path which we will complete on August 2. We will then have hiked more than 1000 km (that's 630 miles) since 1998!

Magdalene,

Your London vacation sounds wonderful! :cloud9: Have a great time! I hope you will have pictures to share. :goodvibes

Safe travels

Oh, how I wish I could eat Mickey waffles for breakfast right now!!

Look at those crowds!! How awesome. What dates were you there again??

I :lovestruc the kids meal breakfast!!! I honestly get kids meals almost everywhere I go. :thumbsup2

I wanted to wish you a great vacation in England. :cool1: My BFF lives in London and she just returned from visiting in Italy and said it was so nice to get back to the "cooler" weather in London so I hope that's true for you too!

Have fun!

Heather

Ps. Spezi rules!!! :lovestruc

What a nice, crowd-free morning at Epcot! You know, I actually don't think Beverly is that bad, either. I'm a gin and tonic drinker - so maybe I like bitter as well!

Our server went to get the chef for Katharina and it turned out that there weren't many dishes she could eat. That was a bit disappointing. I had thought that especially CG would take into consideration when planning their daily menu what kind of allergies they had prior notice of. Also, I had read so often that chefs would offer to make something special or so. But here it was a bit like well, there isn't much for you. So you have to eat the one dish we have for you.

I think this made me quite anxious for all our planned dinners. I told the chef that I found the pork quite tempting, I remembered Magdalene review, and he just said that the polenta would be with milk and didn’t offer any substitutes. As this was my first experience of talking to a chef about what I could eat, I was shy anyways, but his reactions intimidated me even more.
I'm honestly shocked by this. I've read so much about special treatment and it just seems that hasn't happened yet. I hope it does at some point in the trip.

Our server explained about the bison which is much leaner than beef. I did look it up just now and I think it is exactly the same as buffallo which you can get at Artist Point. I loved my buffallo steak there in 2008 and I love corn, mushroom and chestnuts. I like red wine and the taste of junipers. So I thought that this really might be a winner. The only thing I knew that I don't like were the turnips. But Katharina encouraged me to get something different and she was also keen on getting my turnips because she loves them. So I decided to order this.

YUM! Jeff is a huge buffalo/bison fan. You can find it in many restaurants and at the store. We will do buffalo burgers quite often or use buffalo in our pasta instead of beef, a healthier option.

2) Seeing fireworks from inside you get a more detached feeling, you don't hear them as much. I really love fireworks, so I want to be as close as possible. But this is a general CG problem, that's why I think they are neat from there but giving the choice between wishes from CG or from Main Street, I would always choose Main Street.

3) I rather would enjoy the two wonderful things (food and fireworks) separately instead of being distracted from my food by the fireworks and vice versa.
I can see what you mean, and pro's and cons for both.

It is the Bananas and Caramel - Crispy baked phyllo squares layered w/banana, caramel, mascarpone mousse, and caramelized banana

The dish I had in 2008 was the Banana and Buttersotch “Buzz”

Caramelized Banans and Butterscotch Custard Stack with Caramel Sauce, Cocoa Nib and crunchy Plantain
Oh those sound GOOD!

It looks like we will live deep underground??

We decided not to try out Test Track (I did not want to take any risk of combining alcohol, lots of food and Mission Space!) since it had a 35 minutes wait.

A very wise choice!

After the refreshing coffee, we were in the mood for further refreshments and headed to Club Cool. As most of you know this is an area in Future World where Coca Cola offers some of their products, which they only have in certain areas of the world. There is a drink from Germany as well: Mezzo Mix. Which is a mix of coke with orange soda
or pop and a popular drink in Germany. Mezzo Mix is actually just the Coke brand name for it. Another brand is Spezi – and Spezi is also used as the generic name for this drink. It is pronounced like “shpay-tsee”

Katharina and I were a bit confused by the sign, which explained about Mezzo Mix though:

DSC06778.jpg

And it is true that Germans like to mix different drinks together. Other examples are “Apfelschorle”: apple juice and sparkling mineral water, “Radler”: beer and lemonade, “Russe”: beer and coke or “Weinsschorle”: wine with sparkling mineral water. But we have never heard of anyone in Germany who mixes beer with Mezzo Mix!!

Of course Katharina had to try the Beverly:

DSC06392.jpg

Are you surprised that she does not look disgusted? Well, the truth it, Beverly does not taste horrid to us. It tastes like Campari which is very popular here in Germany. And Katharina and I both like it – especially with orange juice! It is also similar to tonic water... I guess we just like bitter as a taste...

I  Campari, it is my cocktail of choice (Campari and soda with a lemon twist). but most people think it tastes like cough syrup. Now I must try Beverly!

Have fun in London!! We love it there.
Those Coke shot glasses were really cool! We love shot glasses as souveneirs-- usually fairly cheap and so interesting, even though we don't use them for alcohol.

We thought so and wanted to make that clear. Especially since you know from first hand experience that Belgian roads are really as horrible as the "Belgian blocks" at Test Track! ;)

Oh yes, they're awful! :rolleyes::laughing:

Magdalene,

Thanks! I will post a few pictures when I am back! The coast is always spectacular and London is great as well. I am thinking about seeing Buckingham Palace which the Queen opens during the summer for visitors...

Oh, how I wish I could eat Mickey waffles for breakfast right now!!

Look at those crowds!! How awesome. What dates were you there again??

I was thinking the same when I posted these pictures of the waffles: I want some now!! :lmao:

You will love my answer to your crowd question: this picture is from January 30th... And the two days before were not crowded at all either! :thumbsup2

Have a great trip!

Thank you!! :goodvibes

Have a great trip and stay safe! :goodvibes

Thanks!! :goodvibes

I will try to get a funny pix of her trying Beverley!!!:rotfl2:

I will be looking forward tor it in your TR! :thumbsup2
