From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

Perfect start. I love the style of writing and the commentary you each add to the other's post! :goodvibes

Great start!! I honestly didn't know Berlin was building a brand new airport - very cool! :)

So glad you ladies started! Great beginning, can't wait to read more!

I'm enjoying hearing about the trip from both of your perspectives. It's kind of funny (but unfortunate) how neither of you got a very good night's sleep before traveling.

Fabulous start, I love the way you are both writing it together!

I really like that, too! I write the most part, email it to Katharina and then get to post it once she added her comments

I am at an advatage here, because after Katharina gets to comment on what I wrote, I can then add comments to hers before I post it!

The new airport should be an improvement, the only problem is that the first years it will be a hassle to get there...

I was really busy during the weekend writing more for the TR, so I hope to post more soon!

I'm enjoying hearing about the trip from both of your perspectives. It's kind of funny (but unfortunate) how neither of you got a very good night's sleep before traveling.

I always have the best intentions of going to bed early before a trip, but never manage to. But I was generally rather rested since I had the Monday and Tuesday before our departure day already off from work.

Ok, I admit, you do look rather sleepy as you are getting there. Tired, is not a good way to start off a 20 hour travel. But I'm sure some of the excitement of getting to Disney was on your side.

Funny how neither of you got much sleep! And OY! on the tequila and snoring!! :headache: Good move, Katharina moving to the other room! I do understand what you were saying about being alone to concentrate the eve. before. It always takes extra brain power for me to think about packing and re-packing! ;)

Fascinating history of the airports! 4!!!??? WOW!! And you know the history of each one?! :worship:

I find the word for travel fever interesting! The Russian word for flight (or trip) is Reice as well. I"m sure they are related somehow. Our language also borrows the word, so we use it a lot too. It can be used for trips you take in a car back and forth from somwhere or such. Very useful word! :thumbsup2

By the time you are together and ready to check in, you look like your perky selves again?? did coffee contribute to those rosy cheeks, or was it that HORRIBLE freezing weather and "We're going to Disney" glow? :rotfl2:

I'm so happy you started!! Loved all your old photos- the castle in Paris looks gorgeous, and Cornwall also looked so beautiful- looking forward to reading both of your perspectives!! :goodvibes

Great start! I neve sleep well the night before my trip either. I always have too many things going through my mind!

Great start to your TR. I hope you both loved AKL as much as I do.

I enjoyed reading the history of the Berlin airports. Fortunately, it didn't take either of you very long to get there and I am sure you were more than ready to leave that freezing weather!

Hi Magdalene and Katharina,

Page 4! I'm a little late to your TR. Wonderful start! :goodvibes

BTW, Magdalene, love your shorter haircut. :thumbsup2

Kathy

I am enjoying your trip report very much! You are both talented writers, such good communicators. You convey vivid imagery. I am also drawn to the depth of your writing with the historical and personal information you share. One of my best and closest friends is from Germany. I'll be sure to tell her to check out your trip report. I also work with people from Germany since my company has offices and a manufacturing plant there. Love it! I look forward to reading more!:goodvibes

As I reminded Jordan earlier today--- it's a sickness.. anytime you need intervention, let us know. Although you may get more enabling than help. :rotfl2:

I know you will get to it in the report so I will wait but I would really like to know "lots" about the flight (how many hours were you on the plane for each section of the trip over and back, how many plane changes, etc.) Thank you both for taking the time to share with all of us.

Hurray!! You are on your way - what a rough night you both had trying to sleep. Hopefully you catch some zzzz's on the plane ride.

It was so interesting to learn about the history of the airports!

I'll be flying into TXL, it was interesting to learn about the history! :)

Joining in! I read some of your PTR in it's earlier days and somehow fell off. Sorry about that! Really interesting airport history. So sorry that neither of you were well rested, it's hard to sleep before a big trip (or a little one!) and snoring husbands do not help.

Looking forward to more!

We don't know the history of all 4 airports!! :scared1: Airports, however, have been very much an issue in local politics here in Berlin over the last year. Tempelhof was closed in October 2008 and there was a strong movement to keep it open. People felt that this was the airport that kept the city alive during the Berlin Blockade. There even is a monument in front of it remembering all the people who lost their lives during the Berlin Airlift (39 Brits, 31 Americans and 13 Germans):

However, the airport is practically in the middle of the city - I live about half a mile from it. So there has always been a security issue. Also it's runway was too short for larger aircraft. And it would not have made sense to keep several airports running at the same time. Berlin, despite being the capital, is not important in air traffic. Only a few years ago it started to get transatlantic services again. Lufthansa has its main hub in Frankfurt and a second hub in Munich and has no intention of leaving either of these airports where they put a lot of money into the infrastructure.

And no, I don't know all this from the top of my head - Wikipedia is my friend. :rolleyes1

Hi Ellen! Welcome! There will be many new photos to look forward to as well!! :goodvibes

Great start! I neve sleep well the night before my trip either. I always have too many things going through my mind!

That's exactly it! And especially if I know I have to get up early... :sad2: But the excitement the next day normally helps surviving on very little sleep.

Great start to your TR. I hope you both loved AKL as much as I do.

Oh yes, we were really looking forward to balmy sunshine, BUT... :rolleyes1

Hi Kathy, welcome! We have not been moving very fast here, so you are welcome anytime to join in even on page 4! ;) Thanks for the compliment on the haircut! I got it cut just before Christmas and really like it short. But it also helps that I lost quite a few pounds since last year... :rolleyes1
