From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

Hey, every good trip needs a tantrum or meltdown or some other casualty...otherwise, you're just not playing hard enough. ;)

Unfortunately the t-shirt is the wrong size, I must have been still worried by Magdalene’s tantrum. So now I have a oversized t-shirt and DH didn!t get as much presents as I planned and I feel bad everytime i wear the shirt...

The underlined part made me laugh. I mean, it makes sense that you should get use out of it, but it's still kind of funny. I can see you wearing it and saying, "sorry dear". :upsidedow

Great Update "Tantrum" and all !!! No I am not offended by the English Pub remark !!! My Godmother ran a country pub while I was growing up and you are sooo right the men stopped in for a liquid lunch , muddy boots and tractors:rotfl2:The PUB had 2 main rooms one was for the muddy boots and the other for when you brought your wife !!!No prizes for guessing which was the busiest:lmao:At the age of 12 I used to tend bar so my godparents could eat Sunday dinner together !!!Brings back such fond memories :cloud9:

Throwing a tantrum and having a tantrum are the same thing, we just word it differantly. I think when traveling anywhere not just Disney you are bound to have a tantrum sometime.

Last Disney trip I had my melt down while at DHS. It was so hot that day we had stopped for lunch at Back Lot Express well it took FOREVER to get our food, when I finally found our table and was just about to take a bite of my food, someone said there was something wrong with there order! I got up didn't say a word and went across the way to the restroom locked myself in the stall and cried! I went back told them to suck it up and eat what they had because I wasn't about to stand in line again to re-order! I heard not a peep of a complaint the rest of the trip!

And on our recent trip to Germany I had a crying melt down in Berlin. I think it was a combination of being on the move and missing home and the kids. DH was at a loss of what to do. I said let me work it out and within 10mins. I was fine. Of course we later made sure we called home ;)

I totally understand what you mean! A melt down somewhere in a trip is just bound to happen. Travelling to a different place will always be stressful in a certain way and I think WDW with all its physical challenges (walking, heat, to little sleep) and foreign countries which can bring on culture shock are especially stressful!

So sorry that you had to cry in Berlin! Or at DHS! Both events sound unpleasant, but the good thing is that they were over pretty soon, just as my episode! :goodvibes

Love this picture! Did your parents like it as well?

Thanks! Yes, I think they did, even though they were a bit bewildered with the concept of Photopass Magic Picture! :rotfl:

I like the ornament. I think your right Katharina she should have bought it.

Of course, now everyone really likes this! I was afraid of exactly this happening when I just posted the update! If it just had been a bit sparkly and not so dull... I also don't really like these flag Mickey Heads that are on there and which they have on Epcot merchandise a lot, just looks weired to me. :confused3

And I have the suspicion that Katharina was only making fun of me with her comment!!

Lovely update ladies! What a nice and sunny day you had compared to the rest of the trip. Was this the only sunny day you had?

Thank you! We had some sun on other days as well, but this was one of the nicest ones! I remember that we were just so happy to see the blue sky on this day.

Pitch a fit is one we often use. I'm not sure why but there is something about souvenir shopping that brings meltdowns out in the best of us. It never fails, for me, that I've not picked up something when I saw it (or didn't let a child get it at the time, making them "think" about it) and then the quest to get it eats up park time. It happens every trip. Anywhere, not just WDW!

Sorry the snack was not so delicious but glad the candy made up for it. Wonderful balloon picture!!!

I glanced over the pictures and the one of you beaming in the sunshine brought a GREAT big smile to my face!!! It's cloudy and only 45 here today- so I loved seeing you enjoying the Florida sun!!

Anway, I'm horribly late for grocery shopping and need to scoot!! I'll have to read this when I get home and AFTER the floors are done!!!

Nice Updates!!! Some really great pictures of the two sisters. To throw another twist to your tantrum story, we always referred to it as "pitch" a tantrum; similar to throw, but still a different variation. :)

pitch is interesting as well! As in "pitch an idea"? I guess it comes from baseball, there is someone called a pitcher as well, or am I totally wrong about this? Because now I remember that a pitcher is also another word for a jug - like a pitcher of beer. Hmm, but it would be a jug of milk, wouldn't it?

Such a pleasant, sunny day! Surprised you didn't throw a tantrum on one of the less pleasant days of the trip (or maybe you still might). :rotfl:

No, I think this was the last melt down for this trip! I guess it was on a sunny day because the rainy days had worn me down so much... :confused3

I agree with Katharina, that is a rather intriguing ornament. I might have been tempted to buy it myself, but maybe it looks better in the picture instead of when you're actually holding it! Sorry Katharina got the wrong size shirt, but like you said, an excuse to come back and get the right one!!! :woohoo:

How funny that everyone likes this ornament! I think the thing about it which put me off so much was that it was this plain grey colour which looked so unfestive to me...

As for your comment about me remembering birthdays, I don't have your's recorded. I remember earlier in your TR, or possibly another report we both visit, you mentioning Katharina's and also saying something about yours, but I can't find it again! :guilty: Let me know when it is sometime and I will make sure I put it where I can remember it in the future!!! :thumbsup2

Don't worry! My birthday won't be for quite some time and I guess I will tell everyone prominently about it in my coming PTR since it will happen during my next WDW trip - which's main purpose is to celebrate my 40th together with the equally young Magic Kingdom! I am bit younger though! ;)

Hey, every good trip needs a tantrum or meltdown or some other casualty...otherwise, you're just not playing hard enough. ;)

Yes, I agree! :thumbsup2 We are real WDW travellers not like those cowards who don't dare to take all the effort - like the people you encounter after having climbed up a mountain who took the cable car up. :rotfl:

The underlined part made me laugh. I mean, it makes sense that you should get use out of it, but it's still kind of funny. I can see you wearing it and saying, "sorry dear". :upsidedow

My little sister has great talent in writing (she has a degree in journalism to show this) and she has always been the wittier of the two of us - I love her remarks as well and think she would make a wonderful TR-writer! :goodvibes I would love to have her along not only for my next trip, but also for the TR. I am not sure wether writing this totally on my own would be as much fun.

Great Update "Tantrum" and all !!! No I am not offended by the English Pub remark !!! Yes, this sounds like the pubs I know! I remember when we were in England the very first time in 1982 my parents always talked about how to figure out which was the part of the pub my mother "was allowed" to go in. While of course we kids stayed outside in the garden and were brought a soda from inside...

I guess melt downs often happen when you have to make decisions and shopping is a lot about decisions! Katharina and I kind of knew before this trip that we would get to the point of a melt down of one of us. I think it nearly happened when Katharina had all this cell phone trouble the day before...

I glanced over the pictures and the one of you beaming in the sunshine brought a GREAT big smile to my face!!! It's cloudy and only 45 here today- so I loved seeing you enjoying the Florida sun!!

Here it is freezing cold and I keep thinking last year we were freezing in Florida, so it is not necessarily better there than here! :lmao:

Great updates!

I must say, I am loving both of your shirts in this picture:

Image0451.jpg

You got them during this trip, right? I may have to put aside a very large tshirt budget before I go in October!! Then I can just bring less clothes and buy them while there!

When we left AK at around 10:30 am we were lucky that an Epcot bus arrived pretty soon. I really like these direct park to park busses, only for the MK don't take the bus to the TTC, but rather the bus to the Contemporary and walk from there. There even is an DHS to Epcot front entrance bus besides the boat to the International Gateway.

I didn't see the park-to-park busses when I was there. Is this a new development? It makes a lot of sense for all of the people with park hoppers.

So somehow the atmosphere had a bit of tension suddenly, Katharina was afraid that she would not be able to buy what she wanted, I was annoyed with myself for giving her bad advice, I was also afraid that we did not have much time for everything we wanted to do that day and instead would just spend all of our time shopping... So when we walked towards the World Showcase we started bickering about nothing and it ended with me bursting out in tears!

Since this is the way things were between us for a long time during our teenager years we could laugh it off very easily – we had been talking about the expression “to throw a tantrum” which does not exist this way in German, we would “have” a tantrum, not “throw” it, so we thought this was an interesting way of expression. So we had a laugh about how I now had thrown a tantrum, which appears to belong to every Disney trip!

Well, in the grand scheme of things, it sounds like a minor tantrum. So maybe you could get away with saying you "had" a tantrum in this case. If it had involved kicking and screaming, then we could legitimately say you "threw" a tantrum. :rotfl2:

And as Poolrat pointed out, you could proceed to meltdowns from there. We usually reserve the Global Thermonuclear Meltdown category for our kids' tantrums. ;)

Unfortunately the t-shirt is the wrong size, I must have been still worried by Magdalene’s tantrum. So now I have a oversized t-shirt and DH didn!t get as much presents as I planned and I feel bad everytime i wear the shirt...

I have to agree with Glenn, this is kind of funny. I wonder if your DH feels like you're taunting him somehow every time you wear the shirt. :lmao:

In the meantime I was very intrigued with this Christmas ornament:

DSC06924.jpg

I thought it looked rather ugly and to me was just plain weired, so grey and not really festive at all...

I like this one. I think Spaceship Earth would look weird if it were a different color. And I'm a sucker for the Mickey face/world flags logo, too.

Great picture! :goodvibes

Ah, that well known Epcot tantrum! Been there, done that! :goodvibes

I never even really thought about that term, "throw a tantrum" - thinking about the crazy grammar would make me laugh and end the tantrum as well!! I wonder if that could work on Henry when he is throwing one??? ;)

Thank you for posting pics of your Japan gummy candy, I'll keep an eye out for it and try some! I've wanted to buy candy there for several trips but am generally intimated since I haven't a clue what I would be getting!

Love both your shirts!!!

Yes, you are correct about a pitcher in baseball. It is funny sometimes all the different ways we use a word so it means something completely different! I think that is a conspiracy by the dictionary people to justify lots of updates and people having to buy a new one ofter! :lmao: But then all of this reminds me of a joke about a German lawyer........ :rolleyes1
How funny that everyone likes this ornament! I think the thing about it which put me off so much was that it was this plain grey colour which looked so unfestive to me...
Well, it IS the Epcot BALL!!! Not very festive either, but look at how many pictures people take of it to put in their TRs!!! :rotfl:

My t-shirt, the blue one, is from the AKL shop, I think they had it at AK as well. It is an organic cotton one, very nice quality! But Katarina's is one we ordered from Zazzle.com. We wanted to get some Disney shirts for our trip and they did deliver for a reasonable fee to Europe. However, I had to go to the post office to pay duty on the t-shirts. They had a few really cute Ratatouille designes, I also got a Wall-E shirt and we got Minnie shirts as well. But I think the cut suits Katharina better than me.

I didn't see the park-to-park busses when I was there. Is this a new development? It makes a lot of sense for all of the people with park hoppers.

The bus stops for the parks are often the furthest away from the entrance, but every park bus stop has a list of all the destination and where the stops are. Only the MK doesn't have them, there you have to go to the TTC.

As far as I know, the busses have always been there. I am sure I took one in 2007 already. I know that a lot of people aren't aware of them, that's why I wanted to talk about them in a bit more detail. I think the DHS to Epcot front entrance bus is new, though. I used to hang out a lot on the Transportation board here on the DIS that's why I know all this. :goodvibes

I guess when you get older you learn not to scream and kick in public...

And as Poolrat pointed out, you could proceed to meltdowns from there. We usually reserve the Global Thermonuclear Meltdown category for our kids' tantrums. ;)

I was still far from thermonuclear! :goodvibes

I like this one. I think Spaceship Earth would look weird if it were a different color. And I'm a sucker for the Mickey face/world flags logo, too.

Ok, is this some kind of conspiracy - at least I now know how Disney earns its money.... You really like it?

Great picture! :goodvibes

Thanks!

I'm sorry this happened in Berlin. But I think that things like that are just bound to happen when traveling far or with a large group or.... It's just really good to be with people you know and who know you so you can get easily out of it.

While of course we kids stayed outside in the garden and were brought a soda from inside...
That is also where I heard for the first time about different adjectives for drink sizes - big was the only one I had known so far. I didn't yet learn English at school then and now I always remember these pub gardens when I contemplate about the right word: big, tall, large, grand, sizable etc.

Well, in the grand scheme of things, it sounds like a minor tantrum. So maybe you could get away with saying you "had" a tantrum in this case. If it had involved kicking and screaming, then we could legitimately say you "threw" a tantrum. :rotfl2:

Who said she didn't kick and scream?

I have to agree with Glenn, this is kind of funny. I wonder if your DH feels like you're taunting him somehow every time you wear the shirt. :lmao:

I'd rather ask not... still kind of a delicate matter

:upsidedow What do I know what people like???

I once heard somewhere that English is so easy to learn as a foreign language because it has not very many words - I guess that's because you use each of them for several meanings. :goodvibes Oh, and please tell the joke, I think everyone would love it! :rotfl:

Well, it IS the Epcot BALL!!! Not very festive either, but look at how many pictures people take of it to put in their TRs!!! :rotfl:
:confused3

:rotfl:

You are aware that we DISers are generally proud of calling that thing by its real name: Spaceship Earth - or more commonly: SE. ;)

It was on this trip that we learned about the delicacy called Cream Tea!! :cloud9:

Who said she didn't kick and scream?

Me??? Never!!! I only throw washing-up brushes after you... :rolleyes2

I'd rather ask not... still kind of a delicate matter

Poor Remy! :sad2:

And Katharina was successful:

I have to chuckle at the irony:goodvibes..One of my best friends lives in Germany, she lives in a small town in Northern Germany called Nordhorn, ever hear or it?
She has come to the States once, she came in September '09, she stayed at my house for a few day and we went to WDW together for 8 days, and this shirt that you posted, she fell in love with:laughing: Every store we saw it, she would carry it around with her! For what ever reason, she didn't buy it.
As a surprise when I went back in January '10, I bought it for her, but held on to it and sent it to her in the mail for her birthday that July:goodvibes
Thanks for bringing back a happy memory:thumbsup2

Now that you mention it...."throw" a tantrum does sound a bit odd
And I laughed right out loud when Katharina said she had to amuse you by stopping for another PP since you threw a tantrum :rotfl2:
It was worth it because your PP pictures are all lovely....I especially like the balloon....that is perfect!! :thumbsup2

What a lovely memory! I looked up Nordhorn, it seems to be very close to the Netherlands - more or less the other end of Germany from where I live. :goodvibes Nemo was extremely popular here in Germany, I think it is still the best known Pixar film here.

I recently looked up some movie statistics and discovered how hugely different the German market seems to be from the US. For example Ratatouille was way more successful here than Cars while it was the other way around in the US. And Rapunzel earned much more money than Toy Story 3 here in Germany... :confused3

Katharina is a very sweet sister and I am glad that she did everything to prevent further tantrum. Even if it included trying to look normal while you have the sun directly in your eyes...

Thanks, the ballon picture is really one of my favourites as well!

In Disney Quite afew adults could be accused of throwing a tantrum instead of a meltdown if the defining attribute is screaming and kicking.:rotfl2:

Yes, there sometimes are interesting behaviours to watch... :rolleyes1

Is it because the shirt says Mine Mine Mine????:rotfl2:

:lmao::lmao:
