From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

No, you're not alone with your thinking the vanilla coke strange! DH loves them but I can't stomach the flavor at all. Have you tried the cherry coke? Now that's delicioius, especially if you make it yourself!

Ice cream floats are very, very good. You can make them with various sodas like rootbeer, coke, ginger-ale etc. Usually they're made with vanilla ice cream. My favorite is a rootbeer float! It tastes like a creamy milkshake but with a tad of that rootbeer flavor. Much better than a vanilla coke!

I think I tried Katharina's cherry coke, but have no memories of it... :confused3 So I guess I was not very impressed!

I like the idea of a ginger ale float... popcorn::

That is so funny....we ordered the exact same thing (thought I'd go with the "healthy choice" too) and had the exact same reaction. In my TR I said that the sandwich was just "okay". And those beans! I tried....I really tried. I took a 2nd and 3rd bite, thinking they just needed a chance. But they were not good. :sad2: Why didn't you warn me?! :rotfl:

Next time, it's an Angus Burger for me!

Sorry!! I think I remember your update about your meal there and when I read that you had ordered the beans I was very worried... I guess next time I will start my TR with a special post with the most important warnings!! :goodvibes

I remember that I gave those beans quite a few chances as well. The sounded like a nice side dish when I read about them on the menu, but they were just not nice at all! I wonder how they can stay on the menu for so long, they must have many of those being returned quite untouched. :confused3 I think on a previous menu the healthy side dish was a fruit salad - much better option! :thumbsup2

Here's my thoughts about the hotels. I would rather have a room that was in better repair even if it was ugly. That's why I'm going to try to switch from POR which is both ugly and in need of a refurb to OWK which isn't my taste decor wise but is newly refurbed. I don't like to start my day with a hectic breakfast, sets a bad tone for the rest of the day. So I guess I would go with Hotel New York.

Hi Heidi, thank you very much for your thoughts! I actually like the look of the new OKW rooms quite a bit. :goodvibes But I get your point. The thing is, Hotel New York has the same age and the info on the state of the rooms is just anecdotal experience gathered from searches here on the DIS... It really is a difficult question!

Dang! I lost my post I tried earlier...

I had said that this one is a tough toss up. Unlike Heidi, I'd go for the better theming, but then again, I don't usually eat a big breakfast, so that wouldn't factor in for me. Hmmm... what to do? what to do?

Do LOVE that your friend gets to go along with you, though. What a nice addition to your party!

Liesa, what a shame that you lost your post! :sad2: We really are excited to have our friend come along for this trip. :thumbsup2

Thanks for your input on the hotel question. I was thinking about skipping breakfast at all as well - it is only continental stuff and while they have nice mini croissants there, we could easily pick something up at the bakery in the train station on the way to the park (you walk past the train station which has a number of shops with non-Disney prices). AND we have the chance of the breakfast in the park... In 2007 we loved arriving at the park at 8 am, ride on an empty Dumbo and then have breakfast. :goodvibes

It is a difficult decision!! We still need to ask our friend for her opinion. If we are able to keep our 40% off discount when we add her to the reservation, I am sure we will stay where we are now because then this would be considerably cheaper...

Hi Ladies,

I think Sci-Fi to me represents a typical American drive-in, typical food is burgers, fries, onion rings, shakes, malts. If you try Sci-Fi again I would get a burger with onion rings and a malt. (for me it has to be a chocolate malt with extra malt powder. :goodvibes YUM) If you every come to Wisconsin I know the first place I would take you it would be here:

http://www.kopps.com/

They have the best Butter Pecan ice cream ever!

Ok enough drooling

Oh and to me Coke should just be Coke (for me diet Coke), I don't like the Cherry or Vanilla Coke and they do have Coke with Lime as well don't like that either. But I do like the Diet Pepsi with Lemon and the Vanilla Pepsi.

About our DLP trip I am so excited you get to have your friend come along. Has she been to a Disney park before?
Katharina you don't like meeting the characters?? :faint:

Newport Bay Club:

pros:
  • décor – we love the theme! It is light and nautical, very much our taste!
  • cheaper
  • possibility to eat breakfast in the Disneyland park during EMH (usually every day from 8 to 10 am, the park does not open until 10 am) subject to availability
  • stayed there in 1997 and have very fond memories of that trip

cons:
  • large hotel with long hallways
  • quite a few reports about bad state of the rooms (a real problem at DLP, they can't afford the urgently needed refurbishments)
  • further away from the parks, most direct path currently closed due to construction, so about a 15 minute walk to park entrances
  • general breakfast chaos (all hotels include complimentary continental breakfast, the restaurants are horribly crowded for that)

Hotel New York:

pros:
  • close to parks (8 minutes walk)
  • reports about state of rooms much better
  • new hotel for us
  • better breakfast offerings, less chaotic restaurants during breakfast

cons:
  • ugly rooms
  • more expensive
  • no breakfast in the parks option

So, if you feel like it, any input would be very much appreciated!!!
I will start with my thoughts about your hotel choices. I would say it depends on realistically how much time you plan to spend in the park and other attractions vs how much actual time you will spend in the room. Under normal circumstances, I figure we aren't going to be in the room very much except to sleep. Also, just how many times would you take advantage of eating breakfast in the park if it was available to you??? In my case, I would figure eating breakfast in the park was really no big deal, so if the "more" expensive isn't a problem, I would go with Hotel New York! Since the goal appears to be the park, having it closer is higher up on the priority list. Also, since the main function of the room would be sleeping then cleaner, nicer, more comfortable rooms would be much better!:thumbsup2 You can't see the "ugly" theming in the dark anyway! :confused3 Throw in the better, less chaotic breakfast, which we would probably take advantage of more often, and I think it is an easy choice, at least for me.

Was reading your last response to me and realized I never went back and commented on your latest updates! :sad2: That butterfinger cupcake looks and sounds amazing, but I'm not sure I could handle that much sugar either, at least not that early in the day. Great job on rope drop and TSM!:thumbsup2 When we were there in 2009 (the infamous meet glennbo123 trip) we actually headed to the MK on a rainy morning, and it was great early on too with low crowds. By the time it started clearing up and the crowds began to arrive, we had done most of the things we wanted with pretty much no wait, and had collected lots of FPs. But that much rain!!! :scared1: Of course, once you're wet, you're wet. Glad it wasn't cold too. Still, having the parks that empty is pretty cool! :cool1: Love the pictures, and nice job "singing in the rain" to you and Katharina! :thumbsup2 I'm wondering now if I ever get caught in the rain there sometime, how many people might head there and try to use that umbrella???? :rotfl2:

I love the character meets too, and always participate with enthusiasm. I like to make comments and see what kind of reaction I get. The most fun is when I flirt with the female characters and the male counterpart is there. It is funny to see how they stay in character (although Mr. Incredible can be quite intimidating when you're flirting with his wife). I'm not sure why you thought it appropriate that you were paired with fluffy Sulley though. Fluffy is not a word I would use to describe you for sure! :)

We have never done Sci-Fi. One day we may break down and try it, but every time I read a report the positives always revolve around the theming, but the only positives about the food that I consistently see is for the burgers and the onion rings. We always go to 50's Prime Time when we are at DHS (scheduled again this trip) and love the theming AND the food, and we have tried a lot of different things on the menu. If I'm really in the mood for a burger some day, along with the rest of the family, maybe we will try to walk in at Sci-Fi, but until then I think I will stick with some place that gives me way more options. The boys love the bottomless vanilla and cherry cokes at 50's PT too (no diet). Personally I think the vanilla coke reminds me of a coke float, so it doesn't seem strange. And are you sure that was a turkey sandwich??? :confused3 (just kidding!!!) :rotfl2:

I'm thinking I might have to get an ice cream sundae when we eat there, just for the spoon!!! (Right Rosie??) ;)

Some of you may know that my DH and myself had the pleasure of meeting these two lovely sisters this fall when my DH and I took a trip to Germany to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary! Well to my delite I had a very special package arrive in the mail yesterday. Any guess who this was from??

I think I will save the Lebkuchen for Christmas Day when we visit with family so everyone can try!

What can I say to you Magdalene and Katharina?? Thank you so much for thinking of me and sending me something so special! You have got to be the most sweetests ladies I have ever met thank you for your kindness and friendship. Merry Christmas and many blessing to you both this coming New Year.

If anyone of you have the opportunity to meet these two beautiful women please do! They are warm, kind and generous and truely wonderful. I am so blessed to call them friends.

Yes, she has been to DLP with us before and she liked it very much.
About meeting the characters: I'm better with that now and I enjoyed meeting characters at WDW. I thinky my problem with meeting characters at DLP is a language problem: how am I supposed to talk to them - English? French? Sign language? I know, this is stupid, but for me it somehow spoils a little bit the fun.

You are very welcome! I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family and the sweets. But be careful, those Lebkuchen vanish realllllllly fast! :goodvibes I usually cut them in quarters before adding them to a plate of cookies.

Oh, this looks like a great place!

I think we just did not feel like a burger that day... :confused3 Malts are another intriguing drink for us - I nearly ordered one at PTC once, but then went with the peanut butter and jam milk shake (which is delicious!!)

Oh and to me Coke should just be Coke (for me diet Coke), I don't like the Cherry or Vanilla Coke and they do have Coke with Lime as well don't like that either. But I do like the Diet Pepsi with Lemon and the Vanilla Pepsi.

Here they have diet coke with lemon, I rather like that. And last time we were in France we got a diet coke with orange - which turned out to be a Mezzo Mix (or Spezi) with a different name!

Thanks a lot for your input! We are really very undecided. I guess I really need to price out the options properly again... I think the problem with the "ugly" theming is that it is so dark, strange colours etc. Actually I rather like the look of the outside, but the rooms are just strange. I guess they are just in desperate need of an update. It is such a shame that DLP is struggling so much financially that it really shows. :sad2:

Was reading your last response to me and realized I never went back and commented on your latest updates! :sad2: That butterfinger cupcake looks and sounds amazing, but I'm not sure I could handle that much sugar either, at least not that early in the day. I think this umbrella would not be helpful at all!! :lmao: I had once a rainy day at DHS as well and I think it is actually a park which is quite good for rainy day touring since most of the attractions are inside. Dumbo or BTMRR in the rain would not be much fun!! :scared1: And the advantage of less people is quite nice! :goodvibes

I love the character meets too, and always participate with enthusiasm. I like to make comments and see what kind of reaction I get. The most fun is when I flirt with the female characters and the male counterpart is there. Fluffy is not a word I would use to describe you for sure! :)

I am slowly learning how to play with the characters - there is a story coming up in the next update about this! But I still very often don't know what to say... I was once thinking about starting a thread on the Theme Parks board about conversation topics for the various characters. :goodvibes Of course, flirting with the princesses while the princes are around would be a bit strange for me... :rolleyes1

We have never done Sci-Fi. One day we may break down and try it, but every time I read a report the positives always revolve around the theming, but the only positives about the food that I consistently see is for the burgers and the onion rings. :lmao: on the turkey sandwich! It does look like ham, doesn't it??? I need to recheck the receipt...

I wasn't such a great fan of the food at Prime Time either, for me this is another theming place. And so far, they always sat me in a boring corner and did not play with me at all... Same experience as at WCC. I think as adult foreigner I really don't have much chance to get them to make fun of me! :confused3 I understand that, they really don't want to take any chances to offend someone who doesn't understand what is going on. I am sure that one day I will be able to go there with some other DISers and can hide amongst other Americans to get a better chance to experience the show! :goodvibes

I'm thinking I might have to get an ice cream sundae when we eat there, just for the spoon!!! (Right Rosie??) ;)

Hi Wendy, I am glad that it arrived in time, in one piece and that you enjoy it! We wanted to say thank you this way for the presents you brought us from Wisconsin when we met you in Germany! :goodvibes

The green chocolates (Blätterkrokant) can be used to decorate the tree. That's what we do here in Germany: we put candy on the tree to be eaten whenever you fancy some. And the Blätterkrokant is my favourite. :cloud9:

Yes, she has been to DLP with us before and she liked it very much.

I thinky my problem with meeting characters at DLP is a language problem: how am I supposed to talk to them - English? French? Sign language? I know, this is stupid, but for me it somehow spoils a little bit the fun.

In addition: This friend was actually supposed to come along for the very first trip Katharina and I planned to WDW in 1999 - the one which I cancelled to go to Africa instead with my boyfriend at that time - the story is in this post.

And you are right, Katharina, I enjoy the characters at WDW much more as well. :thumbsup2

I had a Vanilla diet coke, Katharina had a cherry coke. I did not really like the vanilla taste in my coke, but I think Katharina really enjoyed hers?

Oh yesssss! I finally got it, what is so special about cherry coke. At least served this way. And I told you – it was the diet not the vanilla...

You got diet coke? Well, there's your problem. Diet = nasty. :crazy2:

But definitely try a root beer float next time. I think you'll enjoy it!

Katharina thought she could take the easy route and just order something. But no, once you tell Disney about some dietary restrictions you are not allowed to order food before you haven't spoken to a chef. I think it is actually a good procedure and I guess it is in place in order to cover them from liability. We decided to share the onion rings and the turkey sandwich. We wanted to be healthy and therefore ordered it with the black been relish.

Healthy?? Healthy doesn't belong on vacation! :rotfl2:

We are also debating wether we should change our hotel reservation...

So far we are booked into Newport Bay Club - more info here in this wonderful blog on Allears.net.

Or look at the official website.

We are thinking about upgrading to Hotel New York - covered in another blog post.

Or look at the official website here.

It is only slightly more expensive, but both hotels have some advantages and disadvantages... So we thought if we list the pros and cons here, maybe you would be able to give us some input!

  • stayed there in 1997 and have very fond memories of that trip

cons:

  • further away from the parks, most direct path currently closed due to construction, so about a 15 minute walk to park entrances

cons:
  • ugly rooms
  • more expensive
  • no breakfast in the parks option

So, if you feel like it, any input would be very much appreciated!!!

Well, I'd probably go with theme and cost as the priorities, which makes Newport Bay the winner. But breakfast for our trip was Pop Tarts in the room, so that didn't matter as much to me.

Yes, she has been to DLP with us before and she liked it very much.

It's not stupid, I think I would feel the same way at DLP. Do you know French?

You are very welcome! I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family and the sweets. But be careful, those Lebkuchen vanish realllllllly fast! :goodvibes I usually cut them in quarters before adding them to a plate of cookies.

Thanks for the tip on cutting them up. Hmmmmm maybe i'll only bring over a few instead and save the rest if there that good! :rotfl:

Oh, this looks like a great place!

I think we just did not feel like a burger that day... :confused3 Malts are another intriguing drink for us - I nearly ordered one at PTC once, but then went with the peanut butter and jam milk shake (which is delicious!!)

Here they have diet coke with lemon, I rather like that. And last time we were in France we got a diet coke with orange - which turned out to be a Mezzo Mix (or Spezi) with a different name!

Malts are a very American thing I think you either like malt powder or don't. Have you ever had Malted Milk Balls candy? They are made with malted milk powder and would give you an idea of what it would taste like in you malt drink.

Oh and don't get me going on the Spezi, this was our favorite drink while in Germany. I wish they sold Mezzo here!

Hi Wendy, I am glad that it arrived in time, in one piece and that you enjoy it! We wanted to say thank you this way for the presents you brought us from Wisconsin when we met you in Germany! :goodvibes

We used to put candy on our tree growing up too!!! And sometimes gingerbread cookies!
You didn't have to send Dave and I anything as a thank you it was my pleasure brining you all the treats! It was my way of thanking you for spending time with us! :)

Happy Holidays,
What a hard decision you have. Hotel New York reminds me of the Swan/Dolphin resorts. I enjoyed our Swan/Dolphin stays since the hotels were close to Epcot and had nice smelling soaps but the decor was a bit harsh for my taste. Newport Bay reminds me of Port Orleans and I really like the decor of Port Orleans. If I were staying at Disney I would probably choose Port Orleans over Swan/Dolphin. However, since you have not stayed in Hotel New York and since their rooms are supposed to be in better condition and since the walk is shorter... I think Hotel New York would be my choice if I were making the decision. No matter where you stay I know you will enjoy the hotel.

Dumbo or BTMRR in the rain would not be much fun!! :scared1: And the advantage of less people is quite nice! :goodvibes
DW and I were actually in line one afternoon for BTMRR when there was a storm approaching. We were worried they would shut it down before we could ride, and as we were the next in line they made an announcement that the ride would close if they spotted lightning. :sad2: Well we got on and the train pulled out of the station. Right as we got outside it began to pour rain; huge drops!!! I'm glad I still had my sunglasses on so I could keep my eyes open and watch the ride. We didn't stop laughing until after we got back in the station. :rotfl2: Some of those drops did hurt though!!!
:rolleyes1
Okay, but you can flirt with the princes and see what the princesses do...... I usually just say the first thing that pops into my mind.....a trait which has served me well for a number of years......:rolleyes1
I wasn't such a great fan of the food at Prime Time either, for me this is another theming place. And so far, they always sat me in a boring corner and did not play with me at all... Same experience as at WCC. I guess we like the food so much because it is what we consider good ole' Southern down home cookin'!!! Plus, it reminds me of childhood days at my Grandparents' house at Christmas, when us kids were relegated to the extra table on the back porch. That table was almost identical to the ones in Prime Time.

Of course, a lot of it is being able to enjoy the theming and having fun. I can understand how you wouldn't like it so much being stuck in a corner and nobody will play with you. Sorta like when you were a child and got in trouble for picking on your poor sweet sister!!! (Right Katharina???) :lmao:

I bet sitting through a meal there with Marv and Rosie would change your opinion! We would have you in trouble and out in front of everyone having to sing "I'm a little tea pot" before you could say wiener schnitzel! ;)
The green chocolates (Blätterkrokant) can be used to decorate the tree. That's what we do here in Germany: we put candy on the tree to be eaten whenever you fancy some. And the Blätterkrokant is my favourite. :cloud9:
What a great tradition! We used to hang candy canes on the tree when I was a kid, but no chocolates. I wonder if they have Blätterkrokant in any of the shops of the German Pavilion since it comes so highly recommended.... :confused3
Healthy?? Healthy doesn't belong on vacation! :rotfl2:
True Dat!!!
:rotfl2: This one always gets me, especially when that is what I thought when I saw the food choices in the picture!!! (well, except for the ham, uh, turkey sandwich!!!) :rotfl:

Agree with the Homer drool over the Onion Rings too! :thumbsup2

Hi Magdalina !!!Loved the Story behind the sisters trips !!! Also read that Marv is once again promoting my misbehaving !!I am soooo innocent and he just doesn't understand !!:rotfl2:

When we were at 50's I tried my darndest to get put in the corner .. elbows on table , leaving my veggies !!:laughing:Nothing worked and I so wanted to sing I'm a Little Teapot !!!:rotfl2: Our Server did fetch "Grandma" out to talk to us though !!!

In case I don't get on again I am wishing you a Merry Christmas

Disneyxmas_812.jpg

I decided that I would want to splurge for my birthday abd first trip home and really wanted to get the boardwalk view. but I am really looking forward to being able to book standard view in the future. It sounds like a grwat option!

Glad you liked the Munich update! It is a very beautiful city, unfortunately it is so popular that cost of living is very expensive there.

Very smart of you not to finish the cupcake!!!

Splurge away! It will be worth it - the view is really beautiful and it's wonderful people watching.

You are very welcome! I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family and the sweets. But be careful, those Lebkuchen vanish realllllllly fast! :goodvibes I usually cut them in quarters before adding them to a plate of cookies.

And, I have to agree. :rotfl: Our package arrived yesterday - THANK YOU!!!! - and two of the Lebkuchen are already gone. :rolleyes1 They are heavenly with a cup of coffee.

Thank you so much, it was a very unexpected surprise and brought a huge smile to my face! Henry is all about those gummies too. :goodvibes I'm attempting to save some of it for Christmas day...but I am finding trouble resist it all. Sooooo yummy. I took pics and plan to put them on my TR today or tomorrow!

I probably won't be back here before Christmas, so have a WONDERFUL holiday!!!!

Magdalina and Katharina,

First of all, I am loving all the updates! Please keep them coming!

Second, I logged into my computer and the MSN homepage had "Holiday Classic: German Apple Strudel" staring right at me. It looks delicious, but I couldn't help but think to come over here and make sure that it really is a Holiday Classic in Germany . . . you know, after that whole German pickle thing!:rotfl::rotfl:

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!
