Has anyone used a FRIO to store their EpiPen auto injector? We have the smaller generic size epinephrine auto injectors, and were wondering how well these work and what size would work best. There are what seems line a million options!

I thought epipens shouldn't be refrigerated. Wouldn't a frio keep it too cold?

yeh that is what I thought I always keep my epic pen in a little case ( the one that you can get free from them) when ever I go to disney other times one is in my purse. I would not use a Frio fir them.

You don't need to store epis in anything. I put mine in a bag and toss into my backpack.

A FRIO insulates and will retain the temperature of the product placed in it. The website indicates that is typically around 77-79 degrees (F). That said, I've never known anyone with an EpiPen who felt it necessary to use a FRIO or cooler or anything other than tossing the pen in their day bag. I suggest you contact the people at FRIO if you have questions whether their product is appropriate for your needs -- I've found them to be very helpful in the past; they've even called me after I placed an order to ask what product I plan to use in the FRIO to make sure I had ordered the correct one. Their contact information can be found on their website, I believe they list both a toll-free phone number and local dial number as well as an email address.

I just looked at my Epipen and it says store between 68-77 then under this it says "do not refrigerate protect from sun"

I use an insulated pouch (red thermal Ana-tote: http://www.allstarsales.ca/#!shop/cpxn also available elsewhere) for my Epipens when they are going to be kept somewhere they may get hot or cold -- like inside my park bag [inside can get pretty warm] or inside my medical carry-on [can get hot or cold depending on the plane and where it is stowed].

Otherwise a pouch (e.g. the free Epipen pouches given by Mylan) to protect them a bit (more from squashing than temperature) and keep them wrangeld together in whatever container they are in.

1) Before it was cured, I had diabetes, and used FRIO to keep the pen cool.
2) It really works like-a-champ.

What temperature does the FRIO® maintain?
The FRIO® wallet maintains the required temperature range (18-26°C (64.4-78.8°F)) - for in-use insulin. Please note that it is not a 'fridge alternative.


In-use insulin can be stored at room temperature for up to 28 days. The FRIO wallet maintains 18-26°C (64.4-78.8°F) for 45 hours minimum, even in a constant environmental temperature of 37.8°C (100°F). The wallet can be kept continuously activated for up to one month - simply re-activate every 2 days.

If the FRIO does only go down to 18C then it is in the safe range per prior post for an Epipen temperature "excursion", however *I* read excursion to mean "ok for a brief while but shouldn't keep it there for a long time". If the alternative is Epipen roasting in 100F, FRIO is certainly the way to go; however, there are other solutions which may be a better option for keeping the Epipen close to the 25C it belongs at, depending on the specific circumstances.

(also, I know, for example, people who keep their house at 67 F (19.4 C) and for them that is "room temperature". My hosue is kept at 23 or 24 C depending on the season as that is comfy for us. so 18 is not that much cooler than my friends house (which feels very cold to me)).

I think the people ( I know for me) that said not to use it. It is because I have gone to disney a lot I live where the average temp is higher then at disney I keep my EPI pen in my purse all your long some times in the direct sun for hours numerous times a week ( in 95 100+ degree days with direct sun) It has never gone bad. Would I wast money on a FRIO for it no have I ever thought to put my EPI in my FRIO no. but this is what I do the OP can look at the instruction on there EPI pen look at the FRIO instruction and then decide for them selfs I am just saying what I do with my pen and the condition I leave my pens in.

And you know it's never gone bad how? Epis do degrade in temperature extremes as well as have firing issues in extreme cold temps. Those suggestions aren't put on there to make life difficult-it's there because there can be real ramifications from not storing it properly.

We used the FRIO and it worked great. I would recommend it for sure but you have to be sure they have airflow around them as that's how they work.

because after 11 months of it being in my bag both at home and disney I used it not for me but someone else and it worked, I am not telling the OP not to use one I am just saying I think it is a wast of many. I do things that others say is a wast but I feel safer doing it and if it make the OP feel safer and they feel like it would work then fine they can do it I was just giving my option and what I do with my EPIPens

and to answer the OP original question about what size

I have the FRIO that fits 2 insulin pen I just put my EPI PEN in with out socking the FROI in water so it was not full ( I hope that make since ) the EPI fit fine but was just a little from the top of the FRIO and this is with the EPI in the plastic case it came in. If you do go this way ( and you do know my option on this) I would make sure that water dose not get in the EPI pen as I am not sure what water would do with it and make sure your pen dose not get too cold
