Friends taking advantage

I was there in Dec 2001 and it was probably our most memorable trips ever as well. There were no lines anywhere, for anything. We walked into any restaurant without reservations. We have pictures of us on MK main st with no one and I do mean no one in the pictures but us. The weather was incredible that year also. The holiday decorations were incredible as always. It was the first time we saw it snow in MGM (now DS). They premiered the snowflake glasses that year at MGM also. The lighting of the tree at Epcot might have been witnessed by 500 or so people. Memories!!! Memories !!! That was a great December at the world !!!
Indeed it was! My brother even remarked at the time that it would be very difficult to ever go again since it would never be like that again. As you said, no lines anywhere and everywhere we went, cast members thanking us for coming. It was actually a bit scary to see how empty it was - WDW (and Orlando) would not have lasted if that level of visitors continued for very long.

We will be testing inviting friends along for the first time as DVC owners. We are meeting some friends, who live in Tampa, at WDW for 4 nights over Thanksgiving weekend. We are "giving" them a BWV studio for the 4 nights as their Christmas present from us. We are not anticipating any problems (I know, no-one does..LOL), because they are aware of how DVC works. We just asked them to let us know by our banking deadline if they have to cancel. Even if they have to cancel past that, I'm sure we could find someone on short notice to use our friends' room.

We'll use how this trip goes to decide if we'll be inviting friends/family in the future.

I have been threw stuff sort of like that and it made me upset. We have used ours for other people to come. When things don't go great and you are giving some 2000 or 3000 bucks worth of free resort stay and then don't get treated very nice ,it doesn't feel very good.

Sorry to hear that, That stinks! I will say I did love Michael Jackson's music & dancing, but your friend could have called you back. MJ will be on the news for days to come but planning your trip needed attention ASAP. I can't believe someone would back out.
We were lucky enough to go to WDW w/my sister on her points and it was great! I would never have thought about backing out. I offered to pay my sister money up front & she appreciated that.
I guess the lesson we all can learn is to set a deadline ahead of time in case the other party has to cancel.

We have been down with family and not had an issue. However, I am planning a trip next May/June timeframe and my neice and nephew want to come.

I began planning a couple of months ago and the waffeling has already begun. Needless to say, I will still go during this time but am only getting a 1 bedroom vs a 2BR since there are 3 of us.

I will not go through the ups and downs of "we're going"/"we may not be able to go". If it gets too close and they want to go, I'll just tell them to book a value resort if I can't obtain a 2BR - but they have to book their flights first before I even attempt that. ;)

Alas, it is a rite of passage every DVC'er seems to pass through.

it burns me up to hear these stories...Sad this happened to OP

.. my story goes like this. My family member was planning a Disney trip for her daughters birthday. Because she is no longer working it was looking as though they needed to cancel the trip. So i steped in an offered for them to stay with us and use extra points to assure they would have a good time and still be able to go. Well a week before the trip she tells me she got her taxes and roughly how much it was. Now maybe i'm wrong for expecting but i thought maybe they would kick us down something or maybe even buy a dinner.. they did absolutely nothing but splurg on themselves the whole trip and gave us nada zilch but did say this was the best Disney trip they have ever had.. we book concierge for that trip....

Within weeks of our initial AKV purchase we had friends "suggesting" that we use our points to get a 2 Br. villa so we could all stay together. EXCUSE ME? In what way would I benefit from this? :confused3 I can use all of my points to provide lodging for them because why??? I have no idea how they thought that was going to work.

I told them up front "I don't have enough points for that." I don't WANT to share a 2 Br. villa with ANYBODY. I want to go with my DH and DS and stay in a studio for 2 weeks. I agree that if my friends and/or family want to go to WDW they are free to book their OWN lodging!
