My daughter went to scoop herself some Friendly's "ice cream" this afternoon and noticed it is NOT ice cream. It is labeled "frozen dairy dessert" and the first several ingredients are "milk, skim milk, corn syrup, sugar, cream, wheat flour, cocoa, whey protein concentrate, high fructose corn syrup, etc., with several oils listed. Yuck!!! I need to read labels more carefully. There was a brand that used to advertise that it was made with sugar, cream, and fruit, but I can't remember what brand it was; I'm going to have to find it. I'm not sure if all Friendly's ice creams are now "frozen dairy desserts", or just the Sundae Xtreme Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Gee whiz...it's gone from a half gallon to 1.75 of a half gallon to 1.5 of a half gallon to fake ice cream. Friendly's, I used to love you, but you've lost me on this one. And who knew there could be wheat flour in "ice cream"? I hope wheat allergy sufferers know to read their ice cream labels.

As someone who has to avoid wheat flour, your ice cream has wheat flour in it because of the fudge brownie in it. I typically avoid anything that has words like brownie, cake, pie, etc in the title even if it is ice cream.

Breyers is advertised as just cream, sugar, and fruit.

But my ice cream is only the occasional cone from McD's which if I'm not mistaken if frozen yogurt not real ice cream, but it's just once in a while.

This is why I try to get Bryer's. It's really ice cream and has the least amount of extra garbage in it. Regular flavors anyway. Bets are off on any of the candy, brownie, cookie, stuff.

i'm pretty sure it was breyer's that advertised their ice cream as being made with only milk, cream, sugar and fruit. "frozen dairy dessert"? that must be food industry code for "crap".

I don't think the issue is with the ice cream component, but rather the "extra" stuff added for the Chocolate Fudge Brownie.

That's what I was thinking (and also what makes it a "frozen dairy dessert" rather than ice cream).

I'd check out a simple flavour (i.e. chocolate or vanilla).

A real half gallon made with real milk, cream 'n sugar.

I noticed this a while back because I can taste the difference between the dairy desserts.

It seems to happen especially with the "fun flavors". We stick to vanilla & chocolate.
We add our own "stuff" like brownies and oreo cookies.

Is it light ice cream? Light ice cream has all that crap in it. They have to replace all the fat with something....

Calories seem awfully low to me given that 8 ounces of Non-Fat milk has 90 calories.

Sadly, the OP "ice cream" is probably healthier than real ice cream.

I have never had their vanilla. Every time I get Ben and Jerry's there is always something else that sounds better.
