A friend of mine is having her thyroid removed today and will be in the hospital for the night and I was going to visit her this evening and don't want to go empty handed. Instead of bring flowers I was going to bring her something fun, like and edible arrangement basket or a cookie basket, but will she be able to eat that before it goes bad?

Not sure how she'll feel or if her throat will hurt (like with having tonsils out).

Or would I be better off getting her a gift basket with some chocolate and stuff that she can have in a few days?

Thanks!

After my thyroidectomy, my throat was really sore from the tube due to the general anesthesia. She probably won't feel very good for a few days so I wouldn't bother with fruit basket. She'll probably also be 'crashing' from not having thyroid hormone in her body and possibly low calcium levels. I would suggest something she can enjoy in a few days - her favorite candy or maybe something to read. She'll be laying low for a few days.

Thanks! The few surgeries I've had were outpatient ones and I was STARVING when I got home and ate like a pig, so I had no idea, so I'm glad I asked! :rotfl:

I'll make up a nice basket of some stuff to keep her busy since she'll be home alone for a week and I'm sure day time tv can only entertain a person for so long.

When my sister had surgery last year I made a quick little care package that was much appreciated. I included lip balm (for dry lips after surgery), facial wipes (she didn't want to get out of bed, but loved having that feeling of a clean face), hard candy (for the sore throat) and a couple magazines (no attention span for a book!). She loved it and even made a similar one for a friend a few months later.

Great idea! Thanks!

DH just had this surgery at the end of May. He was on a liquid diet for the first day / night of the surgery so definitely do not bring her anything to eat at the hospital.

My Aunt sent an edible arrangement to our house a couple of days after and that was great. DH was able to eat solids the next day, but everyone is different. He bounced back right away so it depends on the person.

His sister made us a big batch of homemade soup and some of his favorite foods. It was very nice to not have to worry about cooking dinner the first few days.

Even though DH felt fine after a couple of days, he was stick stuck at home for 10 days and couldn't drive so something to entertain the patient might be a good idea too whether it be books, magazines, movies, etc.

I hope your friend has a speedy recovery. :goodvibes
