We own a couple of rental properties and bought our last tenant's 6 month old fridge. It's very, very nice but is a side by side. Our current fridge has the freezer on the bottom. I prefer that setup but it's almost 10 years old and there are other issues including a broken ice maker and stains from the epic sangria spill of '09.

It makes a lot of sense to swap out but I'm not sure about the side by side thing. This is a $2000 fridge with all of the bells and whistles anyone could ask for, very tempting! Our old one was a much less expensive model.

I need to decide today while we have help moving it!

I was skeptical about a side by side at first but our current house has a smaller than normal fridge space and that's all that fits. I'm a complete convert. I like having the smaller shelves because it's easy to see things.

I grew up with freezer on the top, then freezer on the bottom refrigerators. So you were either stooping to get something out of the fridge, or stooping to get something out of the freezer. My mom used to just sit on the floor in front of the bottom freezer fridge when she needed something out of the freezer.
DW and I bought our first side by side 34 years ago, they make so much more sense. Everything you need frequently you put on the top shelves of the fridge or freezer, things used less frequently go on the bottom. A lot less stooping.

Love my side by side. I'm not a fan of the freezer drawer on the bottom. I love having my water and ice in the door of my side by side too.

Thanks for the pep talk! I know that the new fridge is the better choice, just needed reassurance that I won't hate it!

I really don't need the wider shelves these days. Our kids are grown and out of the house and I rarely need to fit a party platter in the fridge anymore.

The new fridge was a steal-6 months of very light use (The tenant was a recently separated guy in his thirties who traveled for work a lot, it was used mostly for beer.) a bigger, fancier model and only $500.

We've had a side-by-side for several years and had to purchase a new fridge last year. We bought the freezer on the bottom style, but the stooping quickly got on my nerves. We went back to the side-by-side, and happily so. It depends, I guess, on what you're accustomed to.

I love my side by side. I don't want to be digging for things in the freezer drawer all the time.

I'll be the lone voice of dissent. I've owned 3 side by side fridges one of which we purchased brand new for over $2K.

I hate them. I find that they are very hard to maintain temperatures on the shared wall inside the appliance. I constantly have things melting in my freezer and things freezing in my fridge. I'm constantly losing fresh produce and eggs because they froze. I also prefer the wider shelves in a top/bottom freezer.

We replaced the first two with a top freezer & bottom freezer. We're selling this house and are building a new house. I'm getting a bottom freezer fridge (most likely the samsung 4 door).
