In Feb my family went on a family trip/ sons wedding to Hawaii.

At the time I didn't know much about frequent flyer miles (actually I still don't!!!)

any way if I sign up for Uniteds would I be able to get the miles from the Hawaii trip?

Also I read (if I read right) you can use some one else's miles if you are alittle short. Is this right and how does it work?

we are going to WDW in Oct and it would be great if we could get/use miles.

thanks for any advice

There is probably no way to get your miles for a trip you took in Feb.

On a FEW programs you are allowed to transfer miles from one family member to another, but they make it hard!

You can't get your mileage from a former flight if you start a membership AFTER the trip. If you had the membership before you took the trip and forgot to give them your membership number, you need to show proof that you flew - aka receipt of ticket AND boarding pass stub.

As for short miles, at United, you can do this per their website:

If I don’t have enough miles for an award, can I buy miles and use them toward award travel?

Yes. Mileage Plus gives you three options for purchasing miles, and you can do it all online.
- Personal Miles® are a quick way to top off your Mileage Plus account with up to 15,000 miles per year.
- Give Miles® make the perfect gift for the travel enthusiast. Limit 15,000 miles per year.
- Reward Miles® can be used in an incentive program for your customers and employees.

Also, every so often, they have opportunities to "Transfer" miles between accounts for a fee. They are just ending one on Wed. Here's the link.

I've been a member with them since 1986 but I'm not a huge flyer. But feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions, and I'll try to help you out.

BTW..united isn't the only option. American, Continental, Delta and others all have their own mileage programs and affiliate partners. Make sure you weight what airport and where you think you'd be flying to make sure you get a membership with an airline company that would benefit you. For example, my sister has Continental because she flies out of Newark to HK at least twice a year (they often a direct flight). I, on the other hand, prefer the United's non-direct flight, so I use United's mileage plus. So weight the routes and hub before signing up.

Good luck!
