frequent flier miles question?

if you book a flight using frequent flier miles and your flight ends up getting cancelled, are they required to rebook you on another flight as if you were a paying passenger or can they just say tough luck? this would be on united.

They are still obligated to getting you from point A to point B.

i just booked a flight (actually not to wdw) using my miles and when i went to choose seats i noticed that i was only the third person on the flight! no wonder i could use my miles, LOL.
