Freezing bread

We had a birthday party for our twins yesterday and DH overbought hot dog and hamburger buns. I've never frozen bread before. Does it keep well frozen? Do you refrigerate it to defrost it when you want to use it? Does it get all soggy?

I do it. And when you take it out, it defrosts quickly.

We do it all the time! Only DW and I eat bread, so we'd be wasting a lot if we didn't freeze. Also, DD has celiac, so we freeze all of her gluten-free bread. It's not quite the same as having fresh bread, but it tastes fine.

I freeze bread regularly. It defrosts surprisingly fast and I don't notice any difference in taste.

The taste is the same --the texture is different. They are not nearly as soft-- I would recommend steaming or toasting the buns a little and they will be fine.

I will freeze bread because I don't like to waste, but then once I take it out of the freezer I remember I don't like how frozen bread tastes when it thaws so I end up throwing it away anyway. I notice a difference where others think it is the same, I guess you will just have to try it and see if you like it.

I agree with this that the taste is fine but the texture is just a little different. It does not make a real difference in the bread though.

Freezing a loaf of bread is different than freezing buns. I never have good luck with the buns after they are defrosted. Make sure you use them soon, they dont seem to "keep" the same as regular bread.

We buy the giant packs of hamburger and hot dog buns at Costco & freeze them. It is just my husband and me. I set them out on the counter (in the bag) to defrost them and they taste just the same. If you defrost them by heating them in the microwave they will get hard.

Sometimes it works alright, other times they do get soggy or freezer burned. I would say the sooner you use them the better.

I do freeze loaves of bread all the time and find that potato bread freezes well. Home Pride potato bread is our absolute favorite and is $3.99 at the local store so when I get to the outlet I buy a dozen or more for $1.49 and freeze it.

i'd dry them in the oven and then crush them into bread crumbs then freeze them. Or you can cube them, dry them in the oven and freeze ot make stuffing later.

I don't eat bread once it been frozen...I don't like the taste of defrosted bread.

We do freeze bread products but you have to be careful about how long they are in the freezer. Bread products seem to develop that "freezer taste" long before other items do.

Cool, a thread about this! I have this as a "work in progress" myself. Last week I bought an extra loaf of bread just to try freezing it.

I figure if I don't like it, I can toast it or use it for sandwiches on the George Foreman grill.

I do freeze bread, but I can tell the difference. For buns, I toast them to freshen them up.

I freeze bread all the time, but try to use it within a few weeks or so. It gets a freezer burned taste pretty quickly.

When it passes the month mark I'll no longer use frozen buns for burgers/dogs, but will use it for bread pudding, breakfast casseroles, etc.

We also like to toast leftover buns under the broiler with butter and parmesan cheese to add a treat to almost any meal - not something I'd serve to company, but great for the family.

Thanks for all the replies. I popped them in our big freezer so we'll see how they fare.

We regularly freeze and thaw out Sunbeam bread and think it tastes fine. We have tried other brands, typically the store brands, and they don't seem to make it through a freeze/thaw cycle as well.

We were at a Sunbeam bakery outlet once and mentioned it to the clerk, and she told us that some bread wrappers (like Sunbeam) are made to handle freezing better. I'm not sure if she's correct about that but it seems possible in our limited experience.

Like others have said, we have had no luck freezing buns.

I have about a kajillion buns in the freezer right now, leftover from the office picnic... There was a miscommunication and MANY people brought buns... couldn't return them, so there I was with 8 packages each of hamburger and hot dog buns that I'd bought... then they said "here, take these, too!" yikes. We don't do a lot of white bread, so I'm trying to find ways to use them up (aside from feeding them to the chickens)... so far we've been using the smooshed hot dog buns to make french toast and it's been fine.

White bread does not freeze well. Hot dog and hamburger buns get yucky after only a few days in the freezer. They have so many preservatives they last for a long time without freezing.

Rye, whole grain and wheat bread freezes very well.
