hey all ~

does anyone else use a FREESTYLE Gazelle to do the workouts? That is what I am doing 40 minutes every other day......

I found a site that tells how many calories you burn on all these workouts - you put your weight in and then the # of minutes you worked out. For example - my gazelle stated I burned 326 calories ( but it does not ask for weight ) on the site - it shows that I burned 1230 calories for a 40 minute elliptical :) I want to chose the site over the Gazelle computer...

anyone have any thoughts?

This isn't an answer but I had a question! Is the GAzelle sturdy? It looks fun but I am so scared to by anything on TV!

I love my Gazelle, I have the one with weight resistance, and I use it on the second of three settings. I think the calorie burning part is wrong though. I can go at about 3 miles per hour on the middle resistance for an hour and it says I only burn 100 calories. That doesn't feel right to me.

The one I have is very very sturdy, I don't have any concerns with it. Its even quiet enough that I can use it while hubby is watching TV in the same room.

well tonite I did 3.2 miles and the Gazelle stated I only burned 374 calories - yet this site http://www.healthstatus.com/cbc.html

states that I burned 1245 calories - that sure felt more like it with the way I felt the work out went....*based on the Elliptical Trainer* .

but I don't know ----

How often do you work out and have you felt a huge diff? I mean I am up to 40 min. every other day with 20 min on the opposite days... and I don't see a thing!!

Yeah, I just found that site too, put in my daily normal activities and it said I burn about 3400 calories on a normal day. Since I only take in about 2200 calories on a normal, nondieting day, I should be losing a couple of pounds a week without dieting, so I'm thinking that site might be slightly incorrect. I put in "calorie burn calculator" in google and checked out about a dozen different sites. Having done this, I'm going to say that I burn about 300-350 calories for 30 minutes on the Gazelle (that's at 210 pounds)

I've been really lax on working out and I just started my new regimen again last night, however, last summer, when I was working out, it was about 4-5 days a week for 45 minutes average and I didn't notice any loss in weight, but I did notice a tremendous increase in stamina and energy, which helped keep me up and moving instead of vegging on the couch.

By the way, 3.2 miles is impressive, I only go about 3 mph, you must be really hauling to get that done in 40 minutes.

Hello again ~

did you get any great sites from google? If you did - can you pm them to me or post them?

I have been tracking ( from the gazelle computer on the bar ) the speed/rate/miles/calories. An average speed for me is 4.5 - 5 - I do not know if that is fast or slow - but last night I did a mile in 11.23 minutes. I was impressed with myself - but then when I tried to get off - my body SCREAMED at me !

LOL

tonite is the 40 minute work out....tomorrow is weigh in.. :sad2:

I didn't really find any sites that jumped right out at me as being reliable by themselves, except a couple that had "walking" at different rates, but not "elliptical trainers", which burn quite a few more calories. I sort of hit all the ones I saw that had elliptical trainer as a choice and then picked a number in the middle of that range. Many of them appeared at least somewhat reliable, but they gave a fairly wide range of answers (from 250 to about 450 for the same entered information.

At 4.5-5 mph, is that a really fast walk or a jog? I walk pretty fast and it only registers as 3-3.5. Do you have any weight resistance on? I've got mine on the second of 3 settings, which slows me down, but gives more toning, I think.

My gazelle does not have the resistance mode - so I just use the basic old setting - when I work out it feels more like a jog - if that makes sense. I can still talk - or take a sip of water - but the computer states at times 3 up to 5 mph. unless that is broke - since DD thinks the Gazelle is a toy!
:sad2:

The Gazelle is a very controversial piece of exercise equipment. That's not surprising, given the wide disparity between calories-burned estimates that are bandied about with respect to the Gazelle. Short of hooking yourself up to a separately-calibrated heart-rate monitor, it's pretty difficult to get a reliable estimate of how many calories you've burned. I'm not sure why, but there must be something about the Gazelle that makes it particularly prone to this high level of variance.

I had a very early version of the Gazelle. (Just a short aside: It's broken now, but I don't think there is much to be learned from that, because it seems clear to me that the distributor of the equipment learned from the repairs I made them pay for while it was under warranty, and have presumably made the product better. Mine broke for the last time after the warranty period was over -- and by then I had come to the conclusion that it was no great loss, as I had found more effective ways, IMHO, to exercise.)

I did try to calibrate how effective it was at burning calories using a heart-rate monitor, and comparing the results I got to the results I got with other exercise. At best, I was able to burn 250-300 calories per hour (I was at about 240-200 pounds, back then). I contrast to this my treadmill, which helped me burn a minimum of 300 calories per hour at the easiest configuration and relatively slow speed. A stationary bicycle, my The Firm practice, and my vinyasa yoga practice all burned far more calories per hour.

However! as I said earlier, I had a very early version of the Gazelle. One other thing it seems the distributors of equipment like this have learned is that for these devices to be effective, they've got to apply resistence to the exercise. That will make the difference between 200 calories per hour or 400 calories per hour, or 800 calories per hour, or 1200 calories per hour.

Regardless, in general, please be very careful about where you get your calories-burned estimates. I deluded myself for years with respect to that sort of thing. A good rule of thumb, based on my experience, is to always use the lowest estimate you can find. If that doesn't satisfy you, then invest in a heart-rate monitor and get a clearer picture of just how much effort you're exerting while exercising. However: Beware even of the calories-burned estimate you get from heart-rate monitors. I found that mine consistently read 30% higher than actual! It is critical that you calibrate such numbers against alternative means of measuring calories-burned, and always go with the lowest estimate you can find.

I like mine - it is for max of 350 --- very sturdy for sure

What one do you have? I've been thinking of getting one, but was always afraid they weren't sturdy.

Good Evening All ~

I purchased my Gazelle 4 yrs ago - it is the Gazelle Freestyle Elite - it does not have the new fangled options that the new gazelles have - but I love it - tonite I was not able to work out - spent from 10 am to 7 pm helping a friend move - up and down and up and down...goodness my legs - but anyway - to answer your ? I have the basic model.

Lisa

Mine is also labeled the Gazelle Freestyle Elite, but has 3 levels of resistance, and a heart monitor.

Popping in on this to say I find that site interesting.

Bicker, you are right on with your advice. I like what you said.
