Just found out that our 4 day cruise this time will include Freeport! I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on excursions? The Lucayan resort looks wonderful and I am sure the whole clan would enjoy a day at the beach there- Has anyone ever just grabbed a taxi and went to the hotel area? At $49.00 a pop to go there it cost alot for a family of 5!

thanks for the help-

We stayed on the ship in Freeport - did the spa in the morning, nice lunch in Tritons and wine tasting at Palo's in the afternoon. Also fit in swimming in the pools. We had a very relaxing day as the ship was not crowded.

Sorry I can't help with any excursions.

Our family of five took a cab ot the Port Lucaya area, at $5 a person. Once there, they pointed us to the beach, which is behind a large hotel area. We walked there, and spent some time on the beach, and even in the pool. It became obvious that those cruise passengers with wrist bands had paid for the excursion, and were entitled to lounge chairs, a towel, and lunch. We tried not to go too near the lifeguards, or to take a chair or towels, or otherwise draw attention to the fact that we had not bought the ship's excursion, and therefore had no wrist band. It was OK, but truthfully nothing special. If ever in Freeport again, I would prefer to stay on the ship. The kids would have bored with that, as we had stayed on the ship most of Nassau, so that's why we took the taxi. It was SO hot then, so we did not visit the shopping area.

I would definitely suggest staying on the ship in Freeport. I was just on the 8/25 cruise and made the mistake of taking a taxi to Port Lucaya. I was very unimpressed by it and wished I had just stayed on the ship.

Is Port Lucaya near where you go for the DCL beach excursion?
Does anyone know of any safe beaches close by without doing the DCL ones. We will have a party of 7 and DCL seems a bit expensive for this.

We just found out we are going to Freeport as well. We thought we had a "day at sea". I am sad to see some of you do not like Freeport as I have never been there. Someone please give some positive feedback.
Thanks

I did the lucayan beach day excursion and loved it...the beach was great and the pool was giant and not crowded...I would take that pool over the tiny wall to wall crowded one on the boat anyday...the pool also had a nice water slide in it. I would rather get off the boat inFreeport and stay on in Nassua, I hated it there.

I agree that if you get off the ship, the Lucayan beach excursion would be the way to go. It was just too awkward to take a taxi there ourselves, and not to have paid for the beach excursion. The guards really were patrolling. I had read previous posts, from some time ago, that it was fine to just go use the beach and pool on your own, without paying for the excursion. Based on our early August experience, I would buy Disney's excursion. Our weather was a bit stormy, so that made it not as nice as it would have been. You will enjoy it if you decide to go.

We also took a taxi to the Lucayan resort/hotel and hung out at the pool there because like mentioned above - it is huge, much bigger than the ship's. We even parked it on the lounge chairs with our own towels, though, I have to admit, I was a little nervous! Kinda felt like a kid trying to sneak into a bar or something! I can say this - Freeport is much nicer than Nassau.
