Free upgrade to OKW or SSR, but no car??

For those of you who received the pin, did you all book yourselves or through a TA?

That's exactly what I was coming here to ask...

I booked thru Disney's web site, and I had not paid my balance yet. Paid it yesterday!

Well...at least we've established from your post that they're not just offering the pin to those who are still due to pay their balance. Good to know...we paid it all ages ago also.

Of course. I was just bummed that I got my hopes all up. But then again if the resort is booked, and the upgrades are also booked, maybe just MAYBE we'll get super lucky and they'll have to upgrade us anyway. I've been pondering since we arrive on Thursday of the busiest FD dinning week all the rooms might be full and we'll get one. Even if it doesn't happen Music is my fav - so I'll be happy there.

I spoke with a representative that actually seemed to know what they were talking about, and ...

she said that due to the enormous response that they received, they are adding more availability each night. She said to call between 8-9 EST in the morning since that is when their systems refresh.

I tried it this morning and (it could have just been coincidence, but ...) there was all of a sudden availability (after >15 calls over the last few days).


She said that the reason why they're doing this promotion is to give value resort peoples a taste of the goodness, hoping that they will want to stay there in the future. This reason seems more likely to me than the theory that they overbooked the value resorts. The dates in question are in low peak (September) - why would they be overbooked in September but not in the summer? and how in the midst of the recession? I think I buy the "since there's a lot of availability, we'll market deluxe resorts/dvc by giving away free upgrades" reason.

Of course Disney is going to say the more positive reason and it is true, they do want guests to sample SSR and OKW since those rooms were sitting empty, but they did overbook due to free dining at the values. They are not going to admit that though.

They did not offer free dining during the summer.

Free dining has been offered in the UK starting on August 2nd as well as a discount for reservations at OKW and SSR. This offer was available since last year.

I think SSR is newer, so maybe that influences some. We went with OKW and I did have a choice. OKW offers 2 queen beds! I will be traveling with my sister, and at my age (50+) I just dont want to sleep on a sofa bed ! I do think both properties are very nice. I know most folks would jump on the one bedroom too if offered, but again those villas come with a king bed and a sofa bed in the living room - great for couples with kids, but two middle age sisters traveling together, well one of us would get a black eye for wrestling over who got the real bed . Thank you, I'll still to the studio with the 2 beds. Its such a great offer, plus we wont be in the room that much. I just want my own bed and dont want to wrestle for it!!!

that was the reason that I picked OKW because me and my mom would be arguing over the bed, But believe me if they would have told me the OKW was booked up I would have taken SSR in a heartbeat!!! Either one is fine with me, but now with changing resorts I am seriously debating the whole car rental thing...

I was just able to switch my OKW upgrade over to SSR. So if anyone had a pin and didn't get in, there's a studio at OKW available. I just hung up with them.

For what dates? We're going 9/24 - 9/29 and I tried calling again yesterday and there was still nothing to be had for me.

If you don't mind me asking, but why did you switch? We were lucky enough to be upgraded as well and had a really hard time trying to decide between SSR and OKW because we didn't know alot about either resort....

We switched because friends of ours were only able to book into SSR and we were at OKW. We wanted to be together.

The week that I'm going is 9/12 - 9/18.

We were told by all the CR's to call daily and call often.

I called again for the 4th time - I just don't think it's gonna happen. What stinks is that I only have until 8/1 to book. I wish it went a little longer so it would be closer to the 45-day mark for us. But I'm sure the fact they we're going during the busiest week isn't helping us much either. Guess I'll just keep trying.

We've been trying 2-3 times a day since last Thursday, I was finally successful this morning.

Are you flexible with your dates? Maybe you could move them a bit and get the upgrade? That is what I had to do. There were no upgrades for our dates but she said if I can push our trip back a day we could get the upgrade so that is what I did.

I'm calling today to pay off my balance (it's due tomorrow) and I'm thinking about trying to add a day to the beginning of my trip.....

Only a $20 change in airfare to arrive a day early....

10% more cost for 20% more vacation...that's my justification. lol

Are you flexible with your dates? Maybe you could move them a bit and get the upgrade? That is what I had to do. There were no upgrades for our dates but she said if I can push our trip back a day we could get the upgrade so that is what I did.

No I can't really be flexible with our dates, I wish I could. We're only going for "5" days, well 4 and 2 half days really. One of those full days being the hubs birthday. And since we both work in a form of retail we can't change with our employers so late in the game. It's a little frustrating - but I know we'll have a great time no matter where we stay.

We are going 9/26-10/3 and could not get the upgrade either. I called at 2:00pm and was told no availablity. I called a few more times and told the same thing. I see you are going within the same time frame as us, so I guess that was a busier week and had fewer rooms available.
