My trip was 9/26-10/3. My sister and I stayed at ASMu with the Free Dining deal. This was my first time going during the F&W Festival and my sister's first visit to WDW. Apologies for no food pictures, but I went cameraless this trip, which I must say was very nice as I got to just enjoy things instead of constantly trying to get pictures of things. But I figured I'd share our experiences anyway even without mouthwatering photos.

Here's the main lineup; snacks and F&W will be interspersed throughout:

Lunch - Columbia Harbour House
Dinner - Casey's Corner

9/27 - MK

Looking forward to reading your reviews! Especially Kringla; it's one place I never seem to get to for a meal.

Columbia Harbour House

This was a first for me (unless I went in '94, but I was 7 and only remember Capt. Cook's, Chef Mickey's, and 1900 Park Fare from that trip!). In the past, I've mostly eaten at MK resorts when at MK for the day, but with an afternoon arrival we wanted to spend all our time in the park.

I ordered the Lighthouse Sandwich - Hummus, Tomato, and Broccoli Slaw on Toasted Multigrain Bread with Potato Chips. Unfortunately, the first thing I put in my mouth was a potato chip that was horribly soggy, saturated with grease... Not a good way to start a meal, especially the first meal of the trip! However, I inspected the next chip, tried it and it was fine. There were a couple more soggy chips in my batch, but not to the extent of that first one. On to the sandwich itself, the toppings were a bit watery. I'm guessing it was the slaw that had too high of a liquid content and made my sandwich drip all over, but the bread held up well and the flavor was nice with a bit more punch than I expected which I liked. My sister got the Grilled Salmon Platter with Couscous and Steamed Fresh Broccoli which she really liked, but couldn't finish since it's a huge portion. We both had the Odwalla Lemonade Slush for a drink which was very good and refreshing. For dessert, we both got the Seasonal Cobbler and forgot to ask what the seasonal fruit was, but I'm pretty sure it was peach. It was a bit heavy on cinnamon IMHO, but we both really enjoyed it.

Overall, I would definitely consider eating here again. I wouldn't change my drink or dessert order, but would probably try a different entree.

Kringla is one of my favorites! And a great value for a QS credit if on the Dining Plan. It seemed really neglected with construction keeping the majority of people out of Norway (and the F&W Festival filling people's bellies), but I imagine business will pick up a lot once Frozen Ever After and the Royal Sommerhus open up.

Casey's Corner

Another first for me! Since we didn't get to MK and have lunch until almost 3, we weren't going to be hungry until after Wishes which limits the QS options a bit. We watched Wishes from the West FP area which is right by Casey's, so that's where we decided to go after fireworks. I knew it wasn't going to be anything amazing, but figured it should be a solid option as long as we went in with no expectations above decent hot dogs.

By this point in the evening they had no desserts left. I take that back; they may have had Cracker Jack, but no cotton candy or brownies. That was OK, because I'd been feeling a bit dehydrated and was contemplating getting a bottle of water instead of dessert anyway, so that made my decision for me. In retrospect I would have gotten two of the Odwalla All-Natural Lemonade instead of one and rounded that out with a cup of ice water, because I really enjoyed the one I got and the cup is a lot smaller than the fountain drinks. I don't know why their lemonade slush is available only in the souvenir cup at Casey's, because I would have ordered that if it was on the menu like at CHH. Although I didn't ask, so maybe it is available, just not listed. My sister got two Nesquik Chocolate Milks which she loves and I think it is worth noting that they don't need to be refrigerated until opened, so they're a great option to put in your bag for a later time or day.

Now to the food: I got the Polish Sausage - Topped with Caramelized Onions and Stone-Ground Mustard with Apple Slices. It looked good; it really was topped with those things, but somehow it didn't taste like it. I mean, I love both onions and mustard but the only flavor I got was a pretty generic store-bought polish sausage. Not bad, but certainly not good. The bun was an absolute joke and not a funny one. I'd heard of the buns that completely fall apart on people, but never experienced it until this meal. It's sad that the highlight of my meal was a pre-packaged bag of apple slices. My sister ordered the Hot Dog Meal with French Fries. She did use the topping bar and she declared the hot dog good while having much less issue with her bun. She also enjoyed the shoestring fries; I tried a couple and they were OK, but I prefer a thicker cut.

Overall, I'll eat elsewhere in the future.

Be Our Guest

Yet another first as this had opened up since my previous trip to WDW. I was incredibly happy that I insisted on doing a preorder the night before. When we checked in we received a yellow rose and bypassed a huge line to the right as we walked right up to a cashier to confirm our preorder. Here's where we hit a bit of a bump with the QSDP though. I had preordered with a soup substituted for my drink intending to use one QS credit for my meal. The cashier told me that only a dessert could be swapped out for a soup. When I informed her that the official brochure said otherwise, she went to grab another CM (presumably some sort of supervisor/manager as she had a different uniform). This second CM informed our cashier that we could exchange drink and/or dessert for any snack, so I thought all would be well; however, she told our cashier to enter our order as if I were getting a fountain drink and then radioed the kitchen to tell them that the order they just sent through should have a soup with it. Thus, we were sent into the dining area with a receipt that did not reflect our actual order which would cause a problem.

I was ready to eat, so I knew to claim a table quickly and leave the rose stationary on it. We found a two-top in the ballroom and I grabbed us some ice water from the drink station. There were CMs circling around checking receipts... I'm not sure what exactly that was for. I read someone's suggestion that they may be policing people getting the self-serve beverages without paying for them; however, nobody looked twice at our ice water questioning if it was soda or lemonade. Maybe they were checking how long people were waiting for delivery? Regardless, I must say that while it's convenient the way the drink stations are currently set up, it would seem to invite system abuse. I'm really surprised they don't have the cashiers hand you cups for beverages when you pay for them with different cups for just water like most fast casual places that have self-service stations where I live. But anyway, it wasn't long before our meal cart arrived and I was so excited!

Both my sister and I ordered and received a Carved Turkey Sandwich served warm on a Baguette with Dijon Mayonnaise and Pommes Frites. My sister also received her staple Nesquik Chocolate Milk and The Master's Cupcake - Chocolate Sponge Cake topped with Lumiere’s special “Grey Stuff”. I had been afraid of this, because there I was with no soup and a receipt that had no soup on it either! I spoke with the CM who brought our food and she understood and said she'd bring me one as soon as she could. I went to take a bite of my sandwich when my sister said "Wait. Didn't you order a cupcake too?" Yes, somehow I had missed the fact that only one Master's Cupcake was delivered! Luckily, the CM with the cart hadn't quite left the area yet and had that on her cart. With sandwich and cupcake and assurance that the soup was on its way, I was finally able to enjoy the meal. And I definitely did enjoy it, if you hadn't figured that out yet by the fact that BOG lunch shows up a second time on our meal itinerary!

The sandwiches were fantastic; they had a nice crunchy crust, but were warm and soft throughout which I loved! There was plenty of Dijon mayonnaise in my opinion; some reviews I had read indicated that it wasn't a noticeable amount, but that was not our experience. The pommes frites (aka French fries) were fine, but nothing special and very thin-cut again which is not my preference. The ketchup was good but there wasn't anywhere close to enough of it for me if I'd wanted to eat all the fries, but after finishing the large and delicious sandwich I only had room for the few fries for which the ketchup lasted. I received my French Onion Soup about halfway through the sandwich and it was HOT! So I ended up eating it after I finished the sandwich, which is not the order I prefer for soup and sandwich. Honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. I knew it was vegetarian which is fine; I prefer a strong onion flavor to a predominant beef broth, but the onions seemed a bit lost in there. The soup seemed to contain lots of melted cheese and mushy French bread with some onions thrown in.

But all the disappointment of the soup was forgotten after The Master's Cupcake. I'd read reviews, so I was prepared for the Gray Stuff being a lighter Cool-Whip-like consistency; I can understand how someone might be disappointed if they were expecting or hoping for a rich buttercream, but I thought it was SO GOOD! From the crunchy pearls on top to the chocolate cake on the bottom, I loved it! Which really surprised me, because I usually am not a chocolate cake fan and I expected to mostly eat the Gray Stuff and leave some of the cake. But no, I ate every bit that I could get onto my fork. It was so light, airy, and delicious...I don't even want to think about how many I would eat if they were on a buffet. Now, full disclosure: I have been known to eat straight Cool Whip before and I love Oreos (but only Double Stuf+, it's all about the cream filling), so if other people's description of the Gray Stuff as Cool Whip and Oreos doesn't sound good to you, please don't let my ringing endorsement compel you to try it, because that's a fairly accurate description.

Gaston's Tavern

Both of us got LeFou's Brew in souvenir cups. I love my stein! It seems pretty sturdy and has some fun little details like dings molded into the plastic. Oh yeah, the drink is good too... They had me at frozen apple juice and the toasted marshmallow syrup cuts the sweetness slightly which is nice. Although the syrup seemed to want to go to the bottom of the cup a bit, so make sure you stir it up a bit so your last sip isn't pure toasted marshmallow flavor at the bottom. Unless that's your thing, but I'm one to leave that flavor of Jelly Belly to others. The passion fruit-mango foam on top was nice, but unremarkable.

its funny...even without photos of food..I can imagine what they look like and taste like from the reviews....thanks for these...anxious to see the rest.

California Grill

We left MK as it closed to regular guests for the start of MNSSHP and decided to take the walking path to the Contemporary. We arrived at the resort in short order, but I feel like I must have missed something obvious, because there were no signs that I saw indicating where to go for the different restaurants. Luckily, the CMs at bell services had no one else to help and were happy to point us to the second floor for the check-in desk. I had known we needed to check in on a lower floor and then they would send us up to the top-floor restaurant in a dedicated elevator, but I had failed to find out where exactly we needed to be naively thinking it would be clear on arrival. Even with the confusion, I still had time for a quick change out of my park clothes before our ADR time.

We were given a pager and sent up immediately with no indication of how long a wait to expect for our table. We were unfamiliar with the restaurant having never been there before, the lounge area was fairly crowded by this point in evening, and I prefer to wait and order drinks once we have a table, so we just picked a spot to stand and chat, waiting for the pager to go off. Happily, that didn't take long and we were seated at a table with a nice view (as so many are there). We were one table away from the windows, but still had lovely views from the comfort of our seats. It was neat to see the Electrical Water Pageant as it made its way around the lagoon.

Quick note on the bread basket: There are two very different types of bread. We received two pieces of each type and both of us grabbed different ones. I was eating a fairly standard crusty roll when my sister asked me what I thought the herb in the bread was; this was a bit confusing for a minute. Turns out she was having the lavender foccacia which I preferred to the standard sourdough once I tried it.

I started off with a Monte Ray cocktail - Mount Gay Rum, Pineapple Juice, and Licor 43 with a splash of Sweet-and-Sour. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of fruity rum drinks. This was my first experience with Licor 43 which seems like a fantastic choice for mixed drinks as it adds to the fruit flavor without diluting the alcohol. It was a strong cocktail and lasted me for most of the meal.

We started our meal by sharing the Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Flatbread - Marinated Tomatoes, House Bacon, Chiffonade Romaine, Lemon Mayonnaise. There was plenty to share between two people and it would have been a fine choice to order as an entree for one person. The tomatoes were the absolute star of the dish, but all the components were nicely done. This was simple, high-quality ingredients put together expertly. An excellent choice.

Going in, I planned on ordering the Crab and Beef Oscar Roll; however, it was not on the menu the night we went. I remember some sort of vegetarian tofu option being listed instead, but the online menu still shows the Oscar Roll. I didn't ask about it and just switched my order to the Pork Belly Nigiri - House-cured Pork, Bacon and Yuzu Rice, Spicy Teriyaki. The teriyaki sauce was very good, but it was sweet not spicy; it reminded me a lot of the Tokyo Joe's version if you happen to be familiar with that CO chain, which means I really liked it as I have my folks bring me a jar of their sauce cross-country whenever they drive out to visit. I'd guess they justify the "spicy" label by putting a tiny dab of wasabi on each of the 5 pieces of rice rolled in seaweed and topped with generous slices of smoky pork belly. Despite the dish being a bit different from what I expected, my only complaint was that it was a little messy to eat and I managed alright. It was definitely filling enough for an entree.

My sister had the House-made Potato Gnocchi with Seasonal Vegetables, Petite Artichokes, Chanterelles, Fava Beans, and Sweet Corn Nectar. She really enjoyed this and was happy our waiter brought a spoon so she could actually get all the broth. At this point in the meal, we agreed that this would almost definitely be our best meal of the trip. Spoiler alert: It was! As it should have been as the only Signature meal on the docket for this trip.

We couldn't resist dessert. My sister had the Warm Homemade Fritters - Banana-stuffed, Cinnamon-dusted Fritters complemented with a Trio of Dipping Sauces. She declared them the best fritters she'd ever had, but I don't have anything else to add as I was too occupied with my Chocolate Pudding Cake - Luscious Chocolate Cake with Nutella Filling, Meringue Kisses, and Chantilly Cream. This description pulled from their online menu fails to include one of the best parts: a few made-from-scratch mini-marshmallows! And it's about as "cake"y as a cheesecake, definitely more of a dense pudding covered with ganache. There was not one speck of anything on the plate that wasn't amazingly delicious.

We made our way to an observation deck to enjoy the sights for the 15 minutes or so that were left until HalloWishes. The audio for the show was clear and the view was fine. We paid less than the price of MNSSHP tickets for an excellent dinner plus a show; that was a win in my book.

I've seen a lot of comments about California Grill not being as good as it was before its refurbishment over two years ago and I can't really speak to that, but this experience was on par with both of my superb visits to Artist Point and our server was great.

It is funny, because I love looking at the food pictures, but sometimes I feel like it makes it harder for me to understand the reviews. Like, once I see their amazing photo, I can't fathom that it didn't taste very good. And vice versa.

subscribing - looking forward reading more
:welcome: I'm glad anyone's enjoying it! I'm mostly doing the reviews to relive some of the memories and cope with the Disney withdrawal as I dive back into my hectic real life. :scared:

Your reviews are great and don't need pictures! I'm looking forward to reading more.

Eating here for the first time on Sunday, Jan 24! Happy to hear it was mostly fine, but will avoid the sandwich you ordered. Thanks for the tip!
