Free Kate

I am not debating the law or that Kate, at this point, should be charged. But, one, an 18 year is hardly an "adult" (regardless of the law) and two, a 14 year old girl is quite capable of doing the pursuing, leading someone on and talking someone into doing something.

Kate seems to be obsessed with this girl. Kate seems to have a problem. But, this girl could very well, too.

The 14 year old knew the law too. She continued the relationship as much as Kate did. The problems these parents are having with this girl are not going to go away simply because Kate goes to jail. She is not a victim. She made the choice to do what she did. The difference is that the legal system isn't going to demand any change in her behavior or counseling to change it; it will be up to the parents.

If you can put a gun in an 18 year old's hand and send him/her off to war they are an adult. If they can make the commitment to a lifetime partner they are an adult. They "should" be able to make competent adult decisions about their life by 18. People who treat then like 15 year olds create these defective human beings and in this case injured a young teen. It is sickening that people are treating the assaulter as the victim.

An 18 year old is an adult. I know some who are more mature than 40 year old adults.
The 14 year old may have been just as guilty however, a 14 year old is a minor so the fault lies with the person of legal age.
She was forbidden contact and contacted her anyway. It was stupid and now, she'll probably go to jail.

I don't think Kate is a victim. Never said she was.

Just because they CAN make a commitment to a lifetime partner at 18 doesn't mean they SHOULD. Just because they CAN join the military doesn't mean they really understand the choice they are making. And no law about an 18 year old being an "adult" makes one truly an adult.

And I know some 14 year olds that are more mature than their own parents.

She was forbidden contact and she did it and she will go to jail as she should. I never said she shouldn't ,but I do think she needs more than jail.

But that doesn't mean that the 14 year old should not be held responsible for her actions. NOT by the law but by her own parents. If they just assume that the only issue here is Kate, its likely they will be sadly mistaken.

Do we know that her parents haven't punished her?

Do we know that her parents haven't punished her?

Well, they obviously haven't limited anything that gave her access to Kate. So, my guess would be no. Besides, its not about punishment. Its about why she continued something she knew she should not, why she continued to go behind her parents backs to see Kate and have contact with Kate. They have to fix the reasons not just punish her.

If a child really wants to make contact, they can whether or not their electronics are taken away from them. They've done it for eons.

That would be a fine argument had Kate not been able to contact her via the electronics.

Again, its not about punishment.

Very true, but why make it easier for them to break the law? In addition, if the 14-year old is a minor and not able to make decisions for herself (as many are arguing) who is responsible for guiding her?

Exactly. I am not saying the 14 year old needs to go to jail like Kate. Just that more needs to be done for this girl. I am afraid the parents think Kate going to jail is going to solve the problem.

One text message is a violation of the court order.

It's too bad Kate couldn't be charged for each and every time she sent a text and initiated contact with the other girl.

But it is a gay thing. If it was a heterosexual couple they would be covered under the Romeo and Juliet law in Florida. Apparently the law doesn't have the same provisions for a gay couple. That needs to change.

At best, all Florida's Romeo and Juliet law would allow the offender in this case to petition to have her name removed from the sexual predator registry. It does not make it legal for highschool aged hetero couples to copulate.

Florida’s “Romeo and Juliet” Law
In Florida, prior to the passage of s. 943.04354, F.S., if a 15 year-old and an 18 year-old were engaged in a consensual sexual relationship, the 18 year-old was subject to registration as a sexual offender and could not petition the court for removal of the requirement to register for 20 years after the completion of his or her sentence, or if adjudication was withheld, 10 years after being released from all sanctions.6 Florida’s “Romeo and Juliet” law does not make it legal for an 18 year-old to have a sexual relationship with a 15 year-old; however, it does provide a mechanism for the offender to petition or make a motion to the court to remove the requirement to register as a sexual offender if certain criteria are met.

First off, I'm very Macklemore about the gay rights issue.

I think that if this had been a hetero couple, the parents may not have flipped out so badly.

That said... you don't have sex with a 14 year old girl. I don't care who you are or what state you are in. That's just rookie.

It's against the law to have sex with a fourteen year old. Period.

Is it against the law to transmit pornography to a fourteen year old in the state where this is going on?

I agree. Had one of my boys been involved with a 14 year old girl he would be sitting in jail because we would have left him there.

VERO BEACH -- Circuit Court Judge Robert Pegg revoked bond for Kaitlyn Hunt, and she'll remain jailed until a trial, that's so far unscheduled.

The judge also added a new charge to her court record -- transmitting material harmful to a minor by electronic equipment, a third-degree felony, and set an arraignment for that charge of Sept. 23.

"The evidence is overwhelming," Pegg said in ordering Hunt held in jail without bail.

This is my first time reading this thread, but here are my thoughts. Why would the OP want her free? She had a sexual relationship with a MINOR. Regardless of whether it was consensual or not it is against the law. It does not matter if this was male/female, male/male, or female/female one of the parties was 14, not of legal age to consent. To make matters worse the defendant violated strict no contact orders from the judge. Do the crime, do the time.

I have to say I am surprised that with the media blitz this started off with, that people werent watching Kate like a hawk all the time. For her to be able to be able to give this girl an Ipad to continue contact. Then her actually being able to meet her again with no ones knowledge, very surprising.

Look at her picture wearing the orange jumpsuit and in handcuffs. What did she think was going to happen? What did her mother think?

Perhaps the support of some people online went to their heads and they stupidly thought it was enough to get away with breaking the terms...who knows. Regardless, they are both stupid beyond belief.

I hope they charge the mother too.
